Mr. Gorton came highly recommended by a mutual acquaintance after I was seriously injured in a multiple vehicle collision. I had been struggling to navigate the insurance morass for more than a year before discovering my injuries had not been correctly diagnosed following several visits to doctors and dozens of painful physical therapy sessions that were making some things worse. Once Mr. Gorton was on board, I was able to take a welcome break in not having to deal with this very confusing and frustrating issue as he took control of the case allowing me to focus on recovery. This gave me time and freedom to find a doctor who finally figured out underlying issues leading to multiple surgeries and more PT without the pressure from insurance companies to resolve the case quickly or continual questions about progress that seemed "too slow" for their company processes. Mr. Gorton's extensive legal experience and deep understanding of the insurance profession led to a positive outcome. He used several specialists to create medical, financial and historical reports in preparation for court, which ultimately convinced the at fault party's insurance carrier to wisely settle pre-trial. I appreciated his pace, counsel, reassurance and patience in dealing with court and insurance. His calm demeanor and tenacious advocacy were a huge plus. This case began well before Covid hit, continuing through many months of court closures and slowdowns. He was there for me and my family every step of the way.

I basically cold-called Kenneth after I found out that my insurance company wasn't complying with state law after I consulted the statutes myself. Aside from being down-to-earth with a frank demeanor, Kenneth is a realist. He was polite but frank when he explained the multitude of ways that insurance companies can avoid accountability by destroying the resolve and wallets of policy-holders through elaborate feats of mental and legal agility. He didn't promise any specific outcome, but he did agree to represent me--and he came through with a glorious vengeance. Previously, my insurance company had refused to pay to fix any mechanical damage sustained from two accidents to the point where my car was actually confiscated by the dealer for being unsafe to drive despite my having had the car inspected almost immediately prior to--and in some cases directly after--the accidents to establish points of reference. While I torched $600 on rental cars during this ordeal, my insurance company--who stubbornly only agreed to fix a single part for about $1,500 and refused to budge from our stalemate--abruptly changed its tune after Kenneth called on my behalf. Not only were they no longer trying to bully me into a paltry settlement that would have saddled me with an unsafe car and a bad faith claim from hell, but they were legally no longer able to talk directly with me, which alleviated a huge source of stress in my life. When Kenneth called saying that they finally agreed to total the car, I was ecstatic. He was the one who originally reminded me about GAP coverage and suggested I look into it, and he was in constant communication as new developments arose. Also, he was highly adept at presenting multiple options depending on the outcome I desired and persevered until the insurance company acquiesced to my desired outcome. In this instance, he was grit personified. Truth be told, Kenneth is the most selfless lawyer I've had the pleasure of working with, and I could not be more impressed with the quality of his work, his tenacity, and the attention to detail he pays to ensure that his clients receive the best outcome they can given their particular circumstances. He thoroughly answered any questions I had along the way, and he really came through for me during a tumultuous transition in my life. There is no way I would have gotten these results had I tried to take on the company myself, especially when I learned how tightly they can circle the wagons to avoid opening the company coffers any more than they can get away with. I have generally had a good relationship with this company, but in this instance, I caught a glimpse of the seedy underbelly of the industry--and it was ugly. Thank God for principled consumer advocates like Kenneth. He was well worth the legal services he offered, and then some. I could not be more appreciative, and if there were a rating above five stars, I'd give him that. And to Kenneth personally--thank you for giving me my life back when I had all but lost hope. This review is long overdue, and if I could give twice the praise I am now, it'd only be half of the praise you deserve for untangling this mess. You've made a huge difference in my life, so I can only imagine what you've accomplished for others. Rock on, rock star.

Kenneth, was extremely helpful and knowledgeable. I had an injury and no clue what steps to take or what to do in order to help myself. Kenneth, volunteered to hear my information and gave me great advice and instructed me on how to achieve the result I wanted. His advice helped me to receive double the amount which was originally offered. Finally, he helped me to reach my settlement by myself, but also offered to step into the case if I was unable to handle it. I very much appreciated him and highly recommend him.

I am very appreciative of Sheri and her empathetic nature. I called a lot of offices and they are always answered by someone who is not the attorney and not empathetic to my lack of knowledge in the situation that I'm facing. Sheri was a great help she listened to me and gave me advice and pointers on how to proceed. I am definitely hiring her for this (if needed) and other matters that might arise in the future. A sympathetic ear goes a long way and I feel that other Firms and attorneys need to take a page from Sheri.

I initially went to Sheri with the intentions of filing for bankruptcy, after working with her for a while we were able to make a few negotiations with a collection agency and I ended up debt free and totally paid off! Sheri helped me through every step of the way and I never would’ve gotten here without her. Sheri truly is an attorney that cares about her clients and I would recommend her to anyone who is considering filing bankruptcy.

Our favorite, awesome attorney, Gary Connett, recommended Charlie to advise us in writing a contract. Charlie exceeded expectations. Somehow he was able to take all our competing perspectives to heart and produce a set of legal documents that are serving us well.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of University Place, Washington?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
