Michelle was a welcome relief to a process that is problematic by definition. In the middle of a divorce, Michelle stepped in to take my case and bring sanity to all the members involved. She never took her eye off the goal and worked the process efficiently to get there. I was not an easy client, but she kept me happy and in line and I am so pleased with the results I would recommend her to anyone.

Michelle represented me during my recent divorce proceding. (I found Michele after experiencing some challenges with a different attorney). From the first meeting I appreciated Michelle's ability to cut to the key issues, her candor, straight talk and willingness to level with me on some tough topics. She demonstrated an excellent ability to provide me legal advice for the topics that had to be addressed at the moment, but took the time to explain the downstream implications and tradeoffs associated with different strategies and approaches. Divorce is a tough, emotional process and Michelle demonstrated compassion and kindness as well- she knew when to push and how to handle sensitive topics. The value of this kind of smart, objective advice was invaluable to me. Communication was always timely, thorough and spot on the mark. She was always up to speed on the details of my case. She is not the type of lawyer who shields helfself behind a paralegal (like many do). Michelle is hands on with all aspects of the case. In dealing with divorce matters, she also had the uncanny abilit to 'do the numbers in her head' and discuss possible outcomes. No doubt this comes from experience-as a lawyer and a mediator and every time I talked with her that experience showed. She was as comfortable negotiating, as conducting a deposition as going through the trial process. Overall, divorce (particularly in a long term marriage) is a messy ugly process that can be made even uglier and more painful with the wrong attorney.

Recently I decided to update my will. After some checking I found The Horizons Law Group online and called them. I was immediately transferred to an attorney who recommended I speak with Attorney Michelle Fitzgerald. After a short phone discussion we met in her office to discuss details or what was required. I found Michelle easy to work with and appreciated her collaborative style. I feel she did a great job explaining my options and didn’t make the task bigger than necessary. She didn’t let things drag out, focused on getting the amendment done, and kept the cost very reasonable.

Michelle represented me in a post-divorce judgment proceeding, a very complex case. She offered strategic advice right from the start and did thorough research to help the court see through my ex-husband's attempts to undervalue the marital estate and income available for support. She is very knowledgeable and well-versed in all aspects of the law and put together a great, thorough team to advance my case and win a good settlement for me and my children. She fought for us when no one else would because I didn't have funds available for a high retainer, which so many other attorneys charged. Her fee structure is affordable. On a personal level I appreciated the fact that Michelle was not only knowlegable and reliable, but also cared. I can remember being very emotional and upset about my case and she told me that everything was going to be all right. That means alot during such a stressful time in one's life when it seems like your fate and your children's welfare rests in the hands of complete strangers in the court system. I would recommend Attorney Michelle Fitzgerald a million times over. She returns phone calls, answers emails and lets you know your case is her priority. This isn't standard conduct, I wish I would have known about her before I obtained counsel in my initial divorce proceeding because she exceeds the professional standards in all capacities and I would have gotten things done right the first time if she was my attorney. She has assembled a great team at Horizons Law Office so you can be assured that your case will be well-researched and presented in court or in settlement discussions to get you and your children the best outcome possible.

I was referred to Lindsey by Legal Shield. I didn't know what to expect and was quit shocked when I met with her for our first consultation. She instantly made me feel comfortable and I felt I was in good hands immedialty. She has been outstanding throughout the entire process. She is so compassionate and very detailed orientated. I was always so shocked how quickly she has gotten back to me with concerns I had. As busy as she is she continued to stay on top of things and is very knowledgeable about the law. I would refer her to anyone needing a family law attorney. Linsey has made this entire process so much easier and I am so thankful we had her as our attorney. She is absolutely amazing.

Lindsey was a wonderful attorney. She was very compassionate and thorough in her practice. Lindsey was eager to answer any questions that I may have had during the process and updated me regularly. She was very understanding, knowing that a family separation is not easy and was willing to go above and beyond to obtain a resolution.

Lindsey was the best thing to happen to me after my divorce. My ex had a large percentage of placement of our child and had been put in a position of power over me, making me feel like I had no option other than to barely see my son and pay an arm and a leg in child support. After hiring Lindsey (and a lengthy legal battle against my ex) I am in a much better position. She helped me through filing motions, finding compromise, and even communicating with my ex. Extremely helpful, completely knowledgeable, experienced in the field, friendly, and compassionate. I don't know where I'd be without her, she was of invaluable help.

Can a Lawyer Represent Me in Courts Outside of Brookfield, Wisconsin?

Whether a lawyer can represent you in courts outside of your city or state depends on their licensure and the jurisdiction of the court:

  • Within the Same State:
Lawyers licensed in a particular state can typically practice anywhere within that state, including all cities and counties. They can represent you in both state and federal courts located in that state.
  • Outside of Their Licensed State:
If your case is in a different state, the lawyer must be licensed in that state to represent you. However, there are exceptions:
    • Pro Hac Vice Admission: An out-of-state lawyer can request special permission to represent a client in a specific case in another state. This requires filing a motion with the court and often working in conjunction with a local attorney.
    • Federal Courts: If your case is in federal court, a lawyer licensed in any state may be able to represent you, provided they are admitted to practice in that particular federal court.
  • International Representation:
For cases outside the United States, different rules apply, and the lawyer may need to comply with the foreign country's legal requirements or collaborate with local counsel.

It's important to discuss your specific situation with the lawyer to determine if they can represent you in the desired jurisdiction and what steps may be necessary to do so.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  • Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing. Most state bar websites have an online directory for this purpose.
  • Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case. Review their website, professional profiles, and case history.
  • Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association's records.
  • Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, Google, or Yelp to gauge client satisfaction and experiences.
  • Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation in the legal community.
  • Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  • Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their abilities and professionalism.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  • Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as:
    • Contracts or agreements
    • Correspondence (emails, letters, texts)
    • Legal notices or court papers
    • Financial records (if applicable)
    • Evidence (photos, videos, receipts)
  • Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and parties involved. This helps the lawyer quickly understand the context.
  • List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, fees, or the lawyer's experience.
  • Financial Information:
If your case involves financial matters, bring relevant documents like pay stubs, tax returns, bank statements, or invoices.
  • Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case, including their names and contact information.
  • Personal Identification:
Bring a valid photo ID for verification purposes.
  • Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points discussed.
  • Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations so the lawyer can provide appropriate guidance on fees and payment options.
  • Openness and Honesty:
Be prepared to discuss your case candidly. Full disclosure allows the lawyer to give accurate advice and anticipate potential challenges.
