. In my current situation, nearly every review that I have written up until now has been a negative one. With over three years of dealing with the Forsyth County court system and legal professionals that were unreliable, dishonest, ineffective, and seemingly only concerned with an amount of money they could make, Attorney JEREMY SWINDLEHURST is a breath of fresh air, and should be the model of professional behavior that all members of his profession follow. I walked into Jeremy’s office mid-morning on a Friday. I came in unannounced with no appointment and I was distraught. The receptionist (also a gem) listened to my story and connected me with Jeremy. Jeremy dropped what he was doing and spoke with me at length about my case. He was patient, thorough, and gentle yet direct. He was straightforward about the good and the not so good issues of my case. He did not pretend to be able to fix everything, but instead, provided options for fixing or improving everything that he could, with an immediate regard for the most urgent issue at hand. On one of the most difficult days of my life, Jeremy was there. He spent an extensive amount of time with me, above and beyond the typical time limitations of an initial scheduled consult. Again, my consult was not even scheduled, yet Jeremy allowed me the time I needed to feel confident in my next steps before leaving his office. Furthermore, Jeremy allowed me to follow up with him after the day of the consult, without charge, to ensure my well being related to items we had discussed. I highly recommend attorney JEREMY SWINDLEHURST. He is one of few attorneys I’ve met who is dedicated to the fundamental purpose of his profession which is helping people when they are most troubled and most vulnerable. I visited three well known legal firms in Winston Salem on the day I met Jeremy. Each of those firms publicly advertise their commitment to being there in a person’s time of need, but Hartsoe and Associates was the only firm that stood behind this promise by way of JEREMY SWINDLEHURST.

This woman fights for whether you've hired her or she's be appointed to you by the court. In my case she was court appointed and she fought for me. It wasn't like the same old song and dance with her in Tazewell County by my side. I'm so confident in her abilities that I would put a lifetime of freedom on the line as long as she was in my corner cause I know she's not gonna take it sitting down but she's gonna grab the bull by the horns no matter how big he is and she'll fight until the last second!!!!

Mr. Carpenter handled my personal injury claim. I was rear ended by a truck (semi) when driving on the freeway. The the driver's insurance denied the liability for my case. With no witnesses or none to help me prove that it was the truck driver's fault Mr. Carpenter fought to defend me. He was able to get enough for my medical bills, car, and for all the stress the I was caused. I am very happy with his services, unlike other attorneys he notified me every step of the way. I would recommend him to everyone. I want to thank Mr. Carpenter's office for their amazing work and professionalism.

I recently contracted with Mr. Daly to perform business law and estate planning. As the owner of a growing dental practice, I asked him to incorporate my business, as well as develop an estate plan for my family's future needs. During all steps of the process I felt that Mr. Daly had my business, family, and personal goals at the forefront of his mind. Although, this process is often intimadating and overlooked, he made it in a word "simple". His professionalism and his ability to make complex legalise understandable was very reassuring as well. I would highly recommend Mr. Daly to anyone, who is seeking similar services or like me has procastinated the resolution of such important and neccessary legal issues far too long. Finally, his correspondence and follow-up during the process was always timely, as I was on a deadline to achieve my legal goals for the beginning of the calender year. In short, I was extremly satisfied with his legal dealings and would wholeheartedly refer him to anyone seeking legal services.

Mr. Linesberry represented my dad in a 3 day long divorce trial recently. This is my first time ever writing a review about anyone or anything but I just have to. "Duke" Linesberry is by far the best attorney I have ever met. He did a spectacular job during the trial . He not only works as hard as he can he genuinely cares. We were all upset at this very stressful time but seeing how he fought for my dad and most importantly was by his side being so supportive that it actually put my dad at ease as well as all of us. I live in NY and am getting divorced I even joked I would pay any amount of money to steal him for 3 days to represent me in NY . I highly recommend Mr. Linesberry because not only is he a hard worker, he's exceptionally smart and genuinely cares

My wife and I had a great experience with Mr. Schwaba through our legal process of getting a fair settlement for personal injuries resulting from being hit by a car on a scooter. When we contacted his office after I was injured in the accident, he responded to us by cell phone even though he was on vacation out of State. Although being very busy, he met with us immediately after returning from vacation to determine the scope of my situation and give us a summary of his experience. He explained the legal process communicated at a level we could understand. He did not pressure at all to hire him or try to escalate his legal strategy beyond what we felt comfortable but gave his professional advice when progress for a settlement with an insurance company seemed to stagnate. I was totally confident to respect his legal advice. Mr. Schwaba is very experienced and respected by colleagues. Mr. Schwaba made us feel comfortable and confident in a stressful situation. Since Mr. Schwaba is a senior attorney he had legal insights and personal experience with the insurance company and attorney we were dealing with in the settlement process. I felt confident at all times we would get a fair settlement. Mr. Schwaba was aware of all aspects of law which impacted legal strategy for us to gain a fair settlement. We would stongly recommend Mr. Schwaba and his staff to anyone they would be well represented in a difficult legal situation. A key aspect to remember when dealing with any legal situation not to be timid to make an appointment with Mr. Schwaba for confident legal direction.

We are current clients of Mr. Rudolph and we would highly recommend this attorney to anyone in need of a good man to represent them. Mr. Rudolph has been excellent in representing us in our estate and real estate cases. He is very professional, very kind, very realistic, very knowledgeable, very proficient, very down-do-earth, very attentive, and on and on... we can't say enough good things regarding this attorney. We have gone through a very difficult situation, and it has been such a blessing that we found him. He is extremely knowledgeable, and extremely kind; both of which have helped us tremendously as we have struggled through a very traumatic year. He has gone above and beyond what we would have ever expected, and he continues to do so. We are so pleased to have found this extraordinary attorney, who is also a wonderful human being. We highly recommend him.

I needed a family law attorney to bring my marriage to a close, and ensure that my daughter's best interests would be protected. As a litigation paralegal with a bit of an aggressive streak, I also needed someone to ensure that I didn't go gangbusters with motions. Robert was above and beyond anything I could have expected. He ensured I was kept informed with what was going on, continued to encourage working toward settlement of issues that really weren't too important, and held firm regarding protecting my daughter's best interests. In the end, we were able to settle the few issues that seemed to have led toward impasse. This positive result would not have been possible without Robert's help, and I would highly advise anyone seeking legal counsel to discuss their options with Robert. He's aggressive when necessary, but also always keeping an eye on amicable resolution - both important and very positive attributes.

Attorney Cullen G. Sweeney is truly an honest, trustworthy and very loyal to his clients. He always returns my phone calls and answers all my questions taking time even when he is in a hurry to go to court. He has always kept me informed and updates me when I inquire. He currently represents me on a (Adam Walsh Act) and has since had me removed from the sexual offender registry (E.S.O.R.N) after The Great State of Ohio decided to make a new law that would keep me on the list for another 5 years after finishing 10 for a low end felony sex offense. I have to say he is taking my case now to the Supreme Justice's of our land to find true fairness of the law. I have served my time in jail and have had my face glued on the website and haven't had any other sexual offenses or would have never been on the list to begin with good legal counsel. Thank You Attorney Sweeney for making my life easier to breath and keep doing a great job.

I'm incredibly grateful for Larry Albrecht's services. He counseled me regarding employment-related issues and helped me achieve my desired outcome. He handled negotiations and kept me informed throughout the process. One of the benefits of hiring Larry is that he can consult the other attorneys in his firm who may specialize in a certain area. For example, when a situation arose regarding a potential workers compensation claim, Larry reached out to his colleague who is a workers comp expert for a second opinion. Larry is a very knowledgeable attorney who acts with great professionalism. I appreciated how efficiently he worked and how mindful he was of my time. He made my situation much less stressful! I believe anyone who chooses Larry, can rest assured that they are in good hands.

I was involved in a high-stakes land use issue regarding the Shorelines Management Act. We were litigating with a landlord employing a tony downtown Seattle law firm. For face saving reasons, the manager directing their law firm left the case on autopilot. Consequently, we were litigating against their lawyer who had every incentive (besides his client's interest) to pursue every imaginable legal cul de sac. They were outspending us almost 3 to 1 (this came out later). Even though we finally settled in the low six-figures, the final tally was pennies on the dollar for us and carnage on the other side. The settlement covered only a sliver of their legal fees and the litigation drew unwanted city attention to their property and the ways in which they were skirting the law. Peter was great to work with. I found him well connected, well regarded and generous with his knowledge and time. He was clever, always wrestling with the case in his mind, and always cognizant of the personal dimension of a case, either regarding the client or the opponent. In this case, as well as with counsel later in several other matters, I found him pragmatic or pugnacious as circumstances warranted. In some instances, we pressed the fight, in others, we walked away. In all cases, these seemed appropriate courses even in hindsight. When I have had further need for services, he is my first call.

He listened to what i wanted to do and did not try to get me to take a plea bargain beyond what i was willing to agree to. When the state refused to be reasonable he was ready< willing and able to take it to trial. I was charged with two second degree assaults with a deadly weapon (dollar store broomstick I was using as a walking stick), I was guilty car prowling and when the owner caught me I ran away and the guy and his son chased me but I did not even attempt to hit either one of them. He was able to suppress my irrelevant criminal history so I could testify on my own behalf. The end result was the jury found me guilty of misdemeanors. He was very honest in is professional opinion and when the state offered a 5 year deal halfway thru trial he recommended I consider it only because if I had been found guilty of the felonies I would of gotten about 20 years with all the felonies and weapon enhancements. He is a great attorney and you have to trust that he will do what he gets paid to dol

I needed an attorney for a complex case involving an insurance company refusing to pay for covered services that could have potentially resulted in the death of my daughter. I used the bar finder for Thurston County and came up with several names. I called them all, and Paul was the first one to show interest in the case and the reasons given by the insurance company. When I first met Paul I was a little skeptical because of his age, but I was not left with a lot of choices. Paul worked with us on his fee, and understood that we were not in the best situation financially because of how much we had already payed in co-pay costs. Since this is a Federal Based Insurance Company for Retired military personnel, the issues were convoluted, complicated, and to say the very least difficult to navigate. We met with Paul explained the situation and retained him as our attorney. Since that time I have been nothing but completely impressed with this young man's ability. The amount of research he did to ensure that not just the major points, but all points where the insurance company had violated the law, and the contract to provide care were covered, explained and were addressed immediately to get my daughter the care she needed. Even though the hospital has not been paid, they understand the need and are continuing to treat my daughter based on this man's ability to fully explain the legal situation. The hospital that is treating my daughter is not involved in any negative way, and he has been in contact with them to the extent that the hospital is cooperating, even though I am sure they are leery that we may change our minds about who gets into litigation. In short, I would say that if you judge this man simply by age, you would be missing out on a great attorney. I stand behind this review 100%, and have given Paul permission to give my name and number to prospective clients that may be unsure of his qualifications.

What a Civil Rights Lawyer Can Do for You

A civil rights lawyer focuses on protecting individuals whose constitutional rights have been violated by government authorities, employers, or private organizations. These lawyers specialize in cases involving discrimination, police misconduct, freedom of speech, and other fundamental rights guaranteed under the U.S. Constitution and civil rights laws, such as the Civil Rights Act, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and the Fair Housing Act.

Whether you've been discriminated against due to race, gender, religion, disability, or other protected characteristics, or you believe your civil rights have been violated by a government entity, a civil rights lawyer can help you seek justice, hold wrongdoers accountable, and secure compensation for any harm you've suffered.

When Should I Hire a Civil Rights Lawyer?

You should hire a civil rights lawyer when your constitutional rights or other protected rights have been violated, and you need legal assistance to seek justice. Some key situations in which you may need a civil rights lawyer include:

  • Employment discrimination: If you have faced discrimination at work based on race, gender, age, religion, national origin, or disability, a civil rights lawyer can help you file claims under laws such as Title VII of the Civil Rights Act or the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
  • Police misconduct or brutality: If you were the victim of police brutality, unlawful arrest, racial profiling, or other forms of misconduct, a lawyer can help you file a lawsuit for violations of your Fourth and Fourteenth Amendment rights.
  • Freedom of speech or assembly violations: If your First Amendment rights to free speech or peaceful assembly have been restricted by the government, a civil rights lawyer can represent you in challenging the violation.
  • Housing discrimination: If you’ve been denied housing or faced unfair treatment due to your race, ethnicity, gender, or disability, a lawyer can help you file a complaint under the Fair Housing Act.
  • Voter rights violations: If you believe your right to vote has been unfairly suppressed or you’ve faced discrimination in the voting process, a civil rights lawyer can help you fight for your rights.
  • Disability rights violations: If you’ve faced discrimination in accessing public spaces, employment, or services due to a disability, a lawyer can help enforce your rights under the ADA.
  • LGBTQ+ rights violations: If you've experienced discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity in employment, housing, or public services, a civil rights lawyer can help you pursue legal remedies.

Hiring a lawyer early on can help you understand your legal options and build a strong case to protect your rights.

What Does a Civil Rights Lawyer Do?

A civil rights lawyer provides legal representation and advocacy to individuals whose rights have been violated. Their work can include:

  • Filing lawsuits: A civil rights lawyer can represent you in court by filing lawsuits against individuals, businesses, or government entities that violated your rights.
  • Advocating for policy changes: Civil rights lawyers often engage in advocacy work, pushing for reforms to laws and policies that infringe upon people's rights.
  • Representing clients in discrimination claims: These lawyers help clients file claims with federal or state agencies, such as the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) or the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
  • Negotiating settlements: In many cases, civil rights lawyers work to negotiate settlements for their clients before a case goes to trial, securing compensation for damages such as lost wages, emotional distress, or legal fees.
  • Defending freedom of expression: Lawyers may represent clients whose rights to free speech, assembly, or protest were violated by government restrictions or other actions.
  • Handling appeals: If your civil rights case has been decided but you wish to appeal the ruling, a civil rights lawyer can help you through the appeals process.

How Are Civil Rights Lawyers Paid?

Civil rights lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the case and the type of legal work involved. Common payment structures include:

  • Contingency fee: Many civil rights lawyers work on a contingency basis, meaning they only get paid if they win your case. Their fee is typically a percentage (usually 25% to 40%) of the settlement or damages awarded.
  • Hourly rate: For cases that require extensive legal research or litigation, some lawyers charge by the hour, with rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and location.
  • Pro bono or sliding scale: Some civil rights lawyers or organizations may work on a pro bono (free) basis or use a sliding fee scale for clients who cannot afford typical legal fees.
  • Flat fee: In specific cases, a lawyer may charge a flat fee for services like drafting legal documents or filing a complaint.

It’s important to clarify the fee structure during your initial consultation to avoid unexpected costs.

How Much Does a Civil Rights Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a civil rights lawyer varies depending on the complexity of the case, the lawyer’s experience, and the type of legal issue. General cost estimates include:

  • Contingency fee cases: For cases taken on a contingency basis, the lawyer’s fee will typically range from 25% to 40% of the settlement or judgment awarded.
  • Hourly rates: Many civil rights lawyers charge hourly rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For straightforward legal tasks, such as filing a complaint with a government agency or drafting legal documents, flat fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Pro bono work: Some civil rights lawyers or nonprofit organizations provide free legal representation in certain cases involving important constitutional or civil rights issues.

Be sure to ask for a detailed estimate of costs during your consultation to understand the financial commitment involved.

Top Questions to Ask a Civil Rights Lawyer

Before hiring a civil rights lawyer, it’s important to ask the right questions to ensure they are the best fit for your case. Key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with civil rights cases?
Ensure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it’s employment discrimination, police misconduct, or First Amendment violations.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer works on a contingency fee basis, hourly rate, or flat fee, and ask for an estimate of the total cost of your case.
  3. What is the likelihood of success for my case?
Ask the lawyer to provide an honest assessment of your case, including the strengths, weaknesses, and potential outcomes.
  4. Have you handled cases like mine before?
Inquire about the lawyer’s experience in cases with similar facts and legal issues.
  5. What is the timeline for resolving my case?
While exact timelines can vary, ask for an estimate of how long your case may take, from filing to resolution.
  6. Will you handle my case personally?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may work on parts of your case, so it’s important to know who will handle your legal matter directly.

How to Check the Credibility of a Civil Rights Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable civil rights lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and track record:

  • Verify their state bar license: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed to practice and has no disciplinary actions against them.
  • Look for specific civil rights experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in civil rights law and have a history of handling cases like yours.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for client reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to see what previous clients have said about the lawyer’s professionalism and success rate.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who can speak to their experience with civil rights cases.
  • Check for advocacy or nonprofit work: Lawyers involved with civil rights organizations, such as the ACLU or NAACP Legal Defense Fund, may have a strong reputation in the civil rights legal community.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a civil rights lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • A detailed account of the violation: Provide a written summary of the events, including dates, times, and any people involved in the violation of your rights.
  • Documentation and evidence: Bring any supporting documentation, such as emails, letters, photos, or video footage that may help prove the violation of your rights.
  • Records of complaints or reports: If you’ve filed complaints with a government agency or reported the violation, bring copies of those documents.
  • List of questions: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes of your case.
  • Information on damages or harm: Be prepared to discuss the harm you’ve suffered due to the violation, such as emotional distress, financial loss, or physical injury.

By preparing thoroughly for your consultation, you can help the lawyer assess your case more effectively and get the best possible legal advice on how to proceed.
