Mr. Magee represented my adult son in a dui case. He was honest and forthright throughout the process, was very good about laying out the risks and potential outcomes for different courses the case could take, didn't sugar coat anything, and his knowledge and experience helped us make the right decisions.

I’m incredibly grateful I found Mary Kennelly of Fox & Fox to represent me on my claim of employment discrimination. I’d never been involved in a lawsuit before and wasn’t sure where to turn, how to find a good attorney, or whether I even had a case. I had just been fired from my job after a series of troubling events with my employer, and it left me shaken. A friend who was familiar with situations like mine and the lawyers who handle them recommended Fox & Fox as the best. I reached out to them, and Mike Fox and Mary Kennelly agreed to represent me. I could not have had better guidance through the legal process, better advocates in the court room, or better partners to navigate a very difficult time in my life. Mike and Mary related to me on a very personal level, always attentive to the stress that I might feel as the litigation progressed through various stages.   They balanced empathy and rigor beautifully: both were supportive and sensitive to what I had been through, while maintaining their intense focus and legal perspective. Mike and Mary bring so much experience and intelligence to their work, and they were alert to aspects of the case I would never have thought of or known to bring up. They were consistently on point when arguing our case, presenting my testimony, and examining my employer’s witnesses. Their preparation and execution impressed me. More than anything, I was proud to be represented by attorneys with such integrity and high ethical standards. Mary and Mike fought for me with respect and grace. They consistently exceeded my expectations and made me feel valued, protected, empowered and understood. I highly recommend Fox & Fox to anyone looking for expert counsel.

I met Tom by going to a community event at the law library in Tacoma where local residents could get free legal information & help with their case. Tom was not only informative and non-judgemental, but he helped me feel safe and in control when I really needed the help and that meant the world to me. He's not just a good lawyer - he's a good person.

Shawn is a phenomenal attorney. When nobody else could help us, we hired Shawn. He conducted his own investigation and upturned the findings of the health department. He proved that my company was innocent of causing a foodborne illness outbreak. He is a class act, honest, friendly and smart as a whip. He understands the food industry better than anyone I have ever met. Even the paralegal he worked with was smarter and more well informed than most of the other attorneys we have hired. I would recommend these guys to anyone. Instead of having to pay millions, which was a foregone conclusion before we brought Shawn on board, we ended up settling for less than $5k. We were innocent and they saved my company.

Next to the death of my mother, the traumatic injury I sustained which prompted the legal expertise of Edwin S. Budge, was the most debilitating and frightenining experience of my life. I was totally vulnerable and at the mercy of his law firm. The experience I had with Mr. Budge and his staff helped me to worry about my medical treatment and recovery rather than the legal aspects of my trauma. The first thing Mr. Budge did was to make me feel at ease; because he always presented an attitude of trust in me and the details I presented to him surrounding my trauma. That in itself helped me in a way that I do not feel Mr. Budge will ever know. During the entire legal process, I felt as though I was his sole client and every concern was met with the utmost professionalism, respect, and care. Even with being thousands of miles away, I knew he was only a phone call away. I NEVER had to wonder whether he was doing his very best to make sure justice was going to be served when it came to my case. He was a GOD sent to me and I feel privileged for having had him represent me. Finally, if there is anything positive I can say that happened as a result of my unfortunate trauma it would be the honor in getting to know Edwin S. Budge and his staff. I would recommend anyone to use his services. You will not be disappointed.

I researched several experienced cannabis attorneys - Ms. Massey was a real stand-out. I emailed her about a time-sensitive matter, but she was OOO. I reached out to her assistant, Karen Kane, at 7:01pm, who actually called me early the next morning. She had contacted Ms. Massey in our behalf; Ms. Massey referred the matter to her fellow, Chris Lynch, who called shortly after Ms. Kane. Mr. Lynch was able to give me the clarification I needed during our brief, complimentary consultation. I am beyond impressed with the care and attention provided by Ms. Masse and her team at Miller Nash LLP, and will go straight to them with our future needs.

Carol has worked hard and long for our family. She has gone above and beyond to support our needs, especially with our daughter. She has arranged for all contingencies and provided us with convenient work arounds and work-throughs for each step in the process. Carol has treated us with respect and care throughout the process, and has been a sweet friend to my wife and I. From the standpoint of her skills, Carol has pushed the system to break new ground and instructed the courts to improve their lack of understanding and to set precedence with cases like ours. Carol is improving the understanding of Judges, lawyers and the general public with cases like our throughout the country and in military courts martials. Without Carols care and passion our case would not have had the impact in the judicial systems that it is now having and will continue to have for years to come. Thank you Carol.

Alex Ackel represented me in a personal injury case after I was seriously injured in a car accident. I found his practice through the recommendation of a friend, and they did not lead me astray. When I started the process I had no prior experience with personal injury law. Therefore, I appreciated that Alex set clear expectations about how the process would work and kept me informed throughout. His office staff were responsive and professional. Alex negotiated tirelessly on my behalf with both car insurance companies. I obviously wish I had not been hurt in the first place, but the experience working with Alex couldn't have gone more smoothly.

Throughout my life I have had to deal with lawyers from time to time in all areas of law. I found myself wrongfully accused and needed an attorney. George was recommended by another lawyer who I had faith in. George lived up to the recommendation and more. Over the years I have come to know two things about George. 1. He is honest to a fault. Unlike most attorneys I have known. and 2. He sincerely cares about his clients. He takes his cases personally. You can't ask for more.

Geoff's firm was recommended to me by a good friend, also a lawyer. My experience with legal issues in the past had lead me to believe that most lawyers were unapproachable and hard to understand. I had a tenant go sideways on me and legal guidance was absolutely imperative. Geoff helped me to understand what steps could be taken, and the implication of these steps. He got me through a very tough situation relatively unscathed and for that, I am grateful. Since then, I've contacted Geoff for guidance in other areas; he's always clear about the limitation of his expertise in some areas but can help me to understand the law in a way that informs my decision regarding the necessity going further. It's a huge boon to know that I have created a professional relationship with someone who is on my side; legal help is not often required, but when it is, you want to know you're working with someone you trust. I trust Geoff.

Karen has been assigned as a public defender to my case. So often you hear stories of just how terrible & uncaring public defenders are. This has not been my experience. Karen has really gone to bat for me, and has treated me with respect and compassion. I don't know what the final outcome will be in my situation, but I feel like I have been assigned with a hard working, caring lawyer, who will go out of their way to provide the best possible outcome. I called Attorney Long to find out information about child support and he gave me the MOST information I've ever had on this journey of about 18yrs!!! I have personally had conversations with attorneys face to face and they never took much of an interest. They just made me feel like another case that would be added to their pile of cases. Although I am tired of going through the motions with a parent that is committed to not paying, Attorney Long has encouraged me not to give up! I feel that with the information that's been povided it's given me more insight as well as a will to keep persuing this unlikely situation. I'm most appreciative and confident that things are now about to move forward!

What a Civil Rights Lawyer Can Do for You

A civil rights lawyer focuses on protecting individuals whose constitutional rights have been violated by government authorities, employers, or private organizations. These lawyers specialize in cases involving discrimination, police misconduct, freedom of speech, and other fundamental rights guaranteed under the U.S. Constitution and civil rights laws, such as the Civil Rights Act, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and the Fair Housing Act.

Whether you've been discriminated against due to race, gender, religion, disability, or other protected characteristics, or you believe your civil rights have been violated by a government entity, a civil rights lawyer can help you seek justice, hold wrongdoers accountable, and secure compensation for any harm you've suffered.

When Should I Hire a Civil Rights Lawyer?

You should hire a civil rights lawyer when your constitutional rights or other protected rights have been violated, and you need legal assistance to seek justice. Some key situations in which you may need a civil rights lawyer include:

  • Employment discrimination: If you have faced discrimination at work based on race, gender, age, religion, national origin, or disability, a civil rights lawyer can help you file claims under laws such as Title VII of the Civil Rights Act or the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
  • Police misconduct or brutality: If you were the victim of police brutality, unlawful arrest, racial profiling, or other forms of misconduct, a lawyer can help you file a lawsuit for violations of your Fourth and Fourteenth Amendment rights.
  • Freedom of speech or assembly violations: If your First Amendment rights to free speech or peaceful assembly have been restricted by the government, a civil rights lawyer can represent you in challenging the violation.
  • Housing discrimination: If you’ve been denied housing or faced unfair treatment due to your race, ethnicity, gender, or disability, a lawyer can help you file a complaint under the Fair Housing Act.
  • Voter rights violations: If you believe your right to vote has been unfairly suppressed or you’ve faced discrimination in the voting process, a civil rights lawyer can help you fight for your rights.
  • Disability rights violations: If you’ve faced discrimination in accessing public spaces, employment, or services due to a disability, a lawyer can help enforce your rights under the ADA.
  • LGBTQ+ rights violations: If you've experienced discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity in employment, housing, or public services, a civil rights lawyer can help you pursue legal remedies.

Hiring a lawyer early on can help you understand your legal options and build a strong case to protect your rights.

What Does a Civil Rights Lawyer Do?

A civil rights lawyer provides legal representation and advocacy to individuals whose rights have been violated. Their work can include:

  • Filing lawsuits: A civil rights lawyer can represent you in court by filing lawsuits against individuals, businesses, or government entities that violated your rights.
  • Advocating for policy changes: Civil rights lawyers often engage in advocacy work, pushing for reforms to laws and policies that infringe upon people's rights.
  • Representing clients in discrimination claims: These lawyers help clients file claims with federal or state agencies, such as the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) or the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
  • Negotiating settlements: In many cases, civil rights lawyers work to negotiate settlements for their clients before a case goes to trial, securing compensation for damages such as lost wages, emotional distress, or legal fees.
  • Defending freedom of expression: Lawyers may represent clients whose rights to free speech, assembly, or protest were violated by government restrictions or other actions.
  • Handling appeals: If your civil rights case has been decided but you wish to appeal the ruling, a civil rights lawyer can help you through the appeals process.

How Are Civil Rights Lawyers Paid?

Civil rights lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the case and the type of legal work involved. Common payment structures include:

  • Contingency fee: Many civil rights lawyers work on a contingency basis, meaning they only get paid if they win your case. Their fee is typically a percentage (usually 25% to 40%) of the settlement or damages awarded.
  • Hourly rate: For cases that require extensive legal research or litigation, some lawyers charge by the hour, with rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and location.
  • Pro bono or sliding scale: Some civil rights lawyers or organizations may work on a pro bono (free) basis or use a sliding fee scale for clients who cannot afford typical legal fees.
  • Flat fee: In specific cases, a lawyer may charge a flat fee for services like drafting legal documents or filing a complaint.

It’s important to clarify the fee structure during your initial consultation to avoid unexpected costs.

How Much Does a Civil Rights Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a civil rights lawyer varies depending on the complexity of the case, the lawyer’s experience, and the type of legal issue. General cost estimates include:

  • Contingency fee cases: For cases taken on a contingency basis, the lawyer’s fee will typically range from 25% to 40% of the settlement or judgment awarded.
  • Hourly rates: Many civil rights lawyers charge hourly rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For straightforward legal tasks, such as filing a complaint with a government agency or drafting legal documents, flat fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Pro bono work: Some civil rights lawyers or nonprofit organizations provide free legal representation in certain cases involving important constitutional or civil rights issues.

Be sure to ask for a detailed estimate of costs during your consultation to understand the financial commitment involved.

Top Questions to Ask a Civil Rights Lawyer

Before hiring a civil rights lawyer, it’s important to ask the right questions to ensure they are the best fit for your case. Key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with civil rights cases?
Ensure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it’s employment discrimination, police misconduct, or First Amendment violations.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer works on a contingency fee basis, hourly rate, or flat fee, and ask for an estimate of the total cost of your case.
  3. What is the likelihood of success for my case?
Ask the lawyer to provide an honest assessment of your case, including the strengths, weaknesses, and potential outcomes.
  4. Have you handled cases like mine before?
Inquire about the lawyer’s experience in cases with similar facts and legal issues.
  5. What is the timeline for resolving my case?
While exact timelines can vary, ask for an estimate of how long your case may take, from filing to resolution.
  6. Will you handle my case personally?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may work on parts of your case, so it’s important to know who will handle your legal matter directly.

How to Check the Credibility of a Civil Rights Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable civil rights lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and track record:

  • Verify their state bar license: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed to practice and has no disciplinary actions against them.
  • Look for specific civil rights experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in civil rights law and have a history of handling cases like yours.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for client reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to see what previous clients have said about the lawyer’s professionalism and success rate.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who can speak to their experience with civil rights cases.
  • Check for advocacy or nonprofit work: Lawyers involved with civil rights organizations, such as the ACLU or NAACP Legal Defense Fund, may have a strong reputation in the civil rights legal community.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a civil rights lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • A detailed account of the violation: Provide a written summary of the events, including dates, times, and any people involved in the violation of your rights.
  • Documentation and evidence: Bring any supporting documentation, such as emails, letters, photos, or video footage that may help prove the violation of your rights.
  • Records of complaints or reports: If you’ve filed complaints with a government agency or reported the violation, bring copies of those documents.
  • List of questions: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes of your case.
  • Information on damages or harm: Be prepared to discuss the harm you’ve suffered due to the violation, such as emotional distress, financial loss, or physical injury.

By preparing thoroughly for your consultation, you can help the lawyer assess your case more effectively and get the best possible legal advice on how to proceed.
