My husband and I had that nagging feeling of needing to have all the important documents in place at some point in our lives. My cousin recently lost her mom. I made the journey through dementia with her up until the day my aunt was freed. Now we are watching all the turmoil and red tape she and her siblings are dealing with as a result of her mom not having a trust/will. Things are stuck in probate and people outside of their family are making decisions for them. No one knows when that “moment” will happen and for some things like dementia it becomes too late to make these decisions once a person is declared incompetent by their doctors. Before our lives are turned upside down by some unforeseen event and not knowing how to navigate the waters, we started with interviewing lawyers. Some lawyers view trusts simply as a business transaction. They’re not terribly interested in the human side of things and we felt like a number. Kevin took the time needed to understand the psychology of our family situation and what we thought about each individual aspect of what we wanted to do to achieve the results that are in our family’s best interest. One of the things we appreciated most about Kevin was being able to communicate with him to check our strategy for dealing with some very emotional and stressful situations. Kevin and his office staff went the extra mile for our family during some very stressful times of illness. His staff is very responsive and when we had some urgent requests, they never made us feel like a burden. Talking about the end of your life and what you want to happen with your minor children and how you wish to have things divided can be an extremely emotional and stressful process, but Kevin put our desires onto paper with empathy and helped us see our way through a situation logically. Kevin was more than just a friendly voice during a stressful process, he treated us like friends. The reassurance of an attorney like Kevin, who knows how to navigate the legal waters, was a heavy burden lifted from all of us. Now we have a fantastic family trust and have the peace of mind that our children will not have added burdens to deal with when are “moment” comes.
