We are contemplating a move back to Washington state where we lived for many years. Without proper estate planning we would potentially be subject to the Washington estate tax. n our initial contacts with the firm, we clearly identified that we were residents in another state. We were instructed to provide our detailed financial picture as well as our current estate planning documents which we provided promptly and told that our information would be forwarded to the attorneys for evaluation. The following is the email response.
“Thank you for filling out and returning your Questionnaire.
I will forward your information to our attorneys for review. Once they have completed their review, I will be back in touch with you regarding a quote for services and the next steps for scheduling.”
Well over a month went by with no word back from STIB. I finally contacted them by email requesting a status update. Within minutes, I received the following reply.
“Thank you very much for contacting our firm. Unfortunately, we are not able to take on your case. Our firm does not advise out-of-state residents on tax issues. Our focus is estate planning and long term care planning.”
The STIB website clearly tax issues as part of estate planning. I also found no restrictions on attorneys in Washington state providing consultation to out-of-state residents considering residency in Washington.
Needless to say, I was astounded by what I consider to extremely poor communication and timely follow-up. If it is indeed not their policy to advise out-of-state residents on tax issues, I would have expected to have been informed of that policy up front thus saving us the time of compiling and sending detailed and confidential financial and estate planning information. In my opinion, this represents incompetent and totally unprofessional behavior.

As someone who has no experience with wills or lawyers and doesn’t understand the process, this was a bad fit. It’s quite possible that if you know what to ask or what’s happening that they will be great for you, but for me I ended up with a $120 invoice for two emails I didn’t understand what to do with, going to look for someone else to help us setup out family will.

I can’t recommend Josh Hummer’s Winchester estate and elder law firm more highly. Unlike most estate lawyers, he recognizes the important relational dynamics that surround the death of loved ones…connections that go far beyond the nuts and bolts of medical and financial planning. His staff exudes compassion and competence. They are dedicated and kind professionals who walk you gently through each part of the process using a detailed and well-executed format. We now have a lovely binder of essential documents and are using their suggestions to compose important final thoughts and wishes that will mean so much to the people we love. The first consultation is free. Definitely worth your consideration if estate planning is still on your to-do list. (And lovely gift mugs to boot!) We loved working with this group. Our estate is small…but we felt valued throughout the entire process!

Mr. B Deforest has done a couple things for me & my Family.. First he did some work for my Parents such as Power of Attorney documents, will ect.. my Mom was diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer so we had to get things together quickly while trying to deal with this terrible situation.. Mr. Deforest had got it done quickly and professionally.. He was very compassionate. Then after my parents situation I decided it was time for me to get my stuff in order for my children before something happens to me..Mr. Deforest was very busy but still found the time to work with me still.. During all this my dog had surgery done, and I had to pause things for awhile.. He had no problem with that he so patient and caring about the situation I so appreciated that.. Eventually I got back to him and we got things done.. Beverly made managing the probate for my mother's estate very easy. I was very lost when I was starting to manage everything and had no idea how any of the estate process worked, especially as I am managing all of it by myself. Beverly worked remotely on most things, and has office space to meet for initial meetings and signing papers as needed. At some point in your life you will most likely need a lawyer's services and where do you go searching - the internet of course as most of us don't want share our need with friends/family so that's where the confusing part begins - who to select, who to trust, who can we afford, do we really need them. Some of us will see that big attorney commercial and call and become a billable number - been there done that before as well. Who do you think is paying for that commercial and big office and big staff - you are!

Divorce is never fun but Natalie made the experience easy and quick. She answered all my questions even though I thought some of them were stupid she never made me feel inferior, even when I had to ask her twice. Michael Shilinski is a very helpful and knowledgeable person to help people make the tough decisions about what to do about making those hard choices that are involved with writing your will. As a young couple, we felt he was helpful and not pushy at all. We later sent older family members to him and they had equally wonderful experiences. Recently, when my father in law passed, he was so responsive via email getting us the forms we needed electronically within 15 minutes. My mom set up a trust 20 years ago when she was a single mom with 3 kids and absolutely no time. When I sat down with her recently to review her estate plan, she was shocked to find the trust was not set up at all the way she thought she'd instructed the lawyers to do it. She wasn't even sure what law firm had originally set it up because there hadn't been any follow up from them in all that time. She also had only partially funded it and most of her assets were not in the trust's name.
I was very happy to find Meier Law to help her restate the trust and get her full estate plan in order. They walked us through every step and helped her feel confident in the plan and how things would be set up to achieve her goals. They also provided detailed instructions on funding the trust and have a plan to check in every few years to see if any updates are needed.
Meier Law is probably not the cheapest option out there, but an estate plan is worthless if it isn't actually set up and funded correctly. So personally I think their prices are a bargain for the level of support we're receiving and the peace of mind to have this all in capable hands.
