I was referred to Patti by a close friend and upon our first conversation I knew she was a professional. She took the time to understand my situation and came up with a few different recommendations of which my wife and I chose the best one for our needs. She has gone above and beyond to make sure we were taken care of and even after our business was completed she's reached out. I highly recommend Patti to anyone looking for a great attorney!

Chuck is a kind, caring, down to earth guy. He honestly cares about his clients and their families. He works hard to get whats right for his clients. His rates are very fair and he will get results. I have witnessed him in action, both as a public defender and private attorney. He is known to go to any lengths, even as a public defender to see that the client is not jaded by the prosecution. I recommend him if you have a case in Armstrong or any other county that is in his area of expertise. He will not do you wrong.

Honestly, I couldn't be more pleased with having attorney Robb Gavin help me with my real estate needs. I have just used him again for assistance in another real estate issue that he came through for me again! I was very pleasantly surprised how expedient and fair he was with his fees. Mr. Gavin originally asked me for a retainer to secure his services. He was so efficient with his work that he sent me back more than half his retainer. You can't be more honest than that! Thanks Robb! Joseph Shebetich

Mr. Hess is a very proactive lawyer that seeks resolution. He has been representing our organization for a number of years and recently he was asked to assist us with an issue that has cost us considerable monies to address a problem that we believe we inherited from the prior land owner. Mr. Hess attempted to resolve the matter without the need for litigation; however, the other parties were not willing to approach the issue with the same thought process. As we continue on this unfortunate path, Mr. Hess continues to provide guidance and counselling in an effort to protect our rights and to hopefully recover the costs we have spent and continue to spend. I am thankful Mr. Hess is our legal advisor and would recommend his services without hesitation.

We had some small property line issue and needed legal advice. We sent out many request to different law firms for legal advice. Mr. Ashley was the only lawyer that respond next day with a personal phone call. He spent a long time listen to our situation and gave us the best advice that actually solve our problem without costing us the financial burden and a time consuming legal battle. We were pretty naive and had no clue, so he could have told us to set up appointment with his office and charge by the hour like some other lawyers do. But He just laid out the different solutions for us over the phone and gave us the correct advice that solve our problem right away. We are very grateful about his help. Mr. Ashley actually changes our perception about lawyer. Mr. Ashley will be THE lawyer we go to if we ever need one. We will recommend him to anyone we know. Thank you, Mr. Ashley!

My career path has taken me to an industry whereby litigation, negotiated settlements and legal compliance is a way of life. The consequences of poor choice in representation can have a devastating outcome even if you are right. Peter Good Esq. is not only an incessant reader but has the ability to professionally carry the message through trial. Not only is Peter Good a great trial lawyer, communicator and businessman, Mr. Good is sincerely interested in obtaining a positive outcome while insuring I was well informed along the way. I strongly recommend Peter Good Esq.

Our legal situation was extremely complex. We were originally residents of PA with the requisite legal documents. Then we bought a home in FL and were residents there, with a whole set of FL-required documents. Recently we sold our FL property, became PA residents again, and because of changes in circumstances, we needed to have PA documents prepared once again. In addition, we are a step-family, each with our own kids. We are extremely pleased with how Attorney Bupp straightened out our legal document mess and drafted a simplified system that protects us and our assets, and in a fair way, at our deaths, directs those assets to those we care about. Our old documents from both states and our step-family situation presented huge challenges which Tim saw as no problem. After patiently listening to us and our desires, Attorney Bupp made suggestions, but the decisions were always ours to make. Each time we presented him with an additional problem, Tim solved it. He was also great at translating the legalese into language we could understand. We trust this man's knowledge and expertise with our long-term needs, (we are elderly), but most of all we trust the man!!!!

Tom Boylan did an amazing job dealing with Evernest our rental agency for a home in Franklin. They simply bullied renters into having no reasonable recourse but to either accept their approach or seek an Attorney. We did the latter. We ended up paying Tom around $2K for what was services over a few months dealing with them. In total, we'd have lost about $8K had we not had him on our side. It was well worth it, and also really wonderful to not allow this rental agency to simply do whatever they want without regard to meeting their obligations. Tom was accessible, responsive, and spot on with his advice. Will use him again in the event we are unfortunate enough to need an Attorney in the future!

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
