I have not had a lot of positive experiences with attorneys but I have to say dealing with Bryan was best I could have hoped for. He was fair with fees and very professional in a very complicated defense of our case. Thank You, Bryan!

I would absolutely recommend Daria Venezia's legal services. She brings initiative and many, many years of experience to the table. She always replies in a timely fashion. She is focused on the case she is working on. I couldn't imagine picking a better lawyer for our home purchase. When I will be writing my living will or will have any other legal case - I will definitely be back in her office.

I am happy to recommend the professional services of Wesley T. Umeda, Esq. I first engaged Wes’s services in March of 2012. I found Wes to be thorough, extremely knowledgeable about State and Federal tax laws, and diligent in his efforts to effectively represent me. Wes represented me during an IRS audit which ultimately went before the United States Tax Court. Due to Wes’s professional expertise and knowledge of the law, my case settled in my favor in May of 2013. Throughout the entire process, Wes never failed to keep me updated on the audit process and court process, nor did he ever tire of my questions and listening to my concerns. I would without hesitation recommend Wes as tax counsel.

Tiffany acted as Legislative Counsel for a municipal board for which I was a member. She was not only extremely knowledgeable on every legal ball we threw in her court, she also took the extra mile to make sure that we were informed and empowered to make good decisions. But what was most impressive about working with Tiffany, was her willingness and desire to create an authentic connection with the residents in our town. She not only listened to us but also to them. She wanted the best for our community as a whole and that was above and beyond the call of duty. A+ legal counsel!

Mr. Anderson is a very knowledgeable attorney and he explained the legal options and process in plain English to me throughout the course of my case. He was very dedicated to my case as he worked many hours on it as it proceeded through the legal system very slowly. In the end, I received a large settlement. I owe this outcome to Mr. Anderson's excellent legal skills and his perseverance.

Chris did such a great job for me! I had a series of flooding happen in my condo that I was renting. Mr. King was very knowledgeable about my tax questions. He was very helpful with all my filing needs, and let me know what the next steps were at every point - from what forms I needed to when the deadlines were and what could and could not be extended. He is always willing to go the extra mile to help.

Donna took care of us during our 5 year Chapter 13 case. It was a lot of work and she went above and beyond to make sure we got through it. She always returns calls, even at night to make sure we knew what was going on so we didn't worry. I would recommend her to anyone who wants to know their attorney is on their side.

Mr. Manco comes highly recommended. He cares about his clients and he is a true professional. Courteous, responsible and very attentive. He deals with various matters like real-estate law, mortgage closings, titles and most civil matters. He makes repeated appearances before many municipal courts. I used him for a very delicate matter. He was very discrete and fought for my rights. He did not rest until he got the job done for me. Lot's of lawyers have the attitude that you need them and they do you a favor. I never felt like that. He truly made me feel like I was an esteemed client. Thank you for all!

My husband and I have worked with Phil for many years - he has executed a very complex family trust for us (my husband is the sole proprietor of his business, and that was part of the trust), acted as our real estate attorney, as well as having guided us through our will, medical directives, powers of attorney, etc. He is calm, patient, detailed, and as knowledgeable as they come. He is always quick to return calls, and his office staff are wonderful to work with, too. He was perfect for creating our will - a very emotional and challenging process, especially as you try to determine guardiancy of children. He guided us gently and carefully pointed out various considerations that we would have missed or avoided. He was sensitive to the delicacy of the process. And he took care of every detail. When we sold our house without a realtor, Phil was invaluable as a source of guidance as we worked out P&S with him and discussed negiotiations and closing details. We recommend Phil with the very highest rating. If all attorneys were like him, they'd be revered by the public!

Maureen has prepared loan documentation involving some of the most complex real estate secured, franchise based loans. She is exceptional at spotting title issues and potential issues that may arise in collateral foreclosures or borrower bankruptcy filings. I have personally worked with attorneys at prominent San Francisco and Silicon Valley law firms on complicated creditor and real property issues. Maureen takes a back seat to none.

I am 43 and have been in the printing industry since I was 15 years old. This is the only thing I know how to do. I have never been unemployed in my life, ever. Five years ago I was employed at a Minuteman Press Franchise and was sold 20% shares in the company. I helped build that shop from losing 5k a month to 500k in gross sales per year. We had growth every year. I never was given a raise for five years. I asked for one repeatedly but was always told no. So I decided to start my own print shop. I gave my notice July 6th 2010 and it was accepted and left two weeks later. I started my shop August 2 and everything was fine. Until they found out and I began to receive cease and desist letters. I contacted an attorney which responded to the letter but then told me I needed a trial attorney. I paid another attorney and he took my money and began to negotiate on my behalf. He then tells me I have to shut down and move my shop out of Joliet. We parted ways and I found another firm very reputable here in town. They looked into the fiduciary duty and told me a few days later that the courts are divided on those cases. They then said it would be too difficult to defend, keep in mind I DID NOT have a non-compete contract. So I almost called it quits! I then contacted Querry & Harrow and John Brom. He took my case and said not to worry and kept me focused on my business while he took care of the legal stuff. We then fought the injunction to shut me down and not only won that part but also forced them to settle the case and end this nightmare I found myself in. John saved me and my business and I can continue to do the work that I have done for my entire life. I am so grateful to have met John, he has changed my life and my employees.

Janelle is one of the rare lawyers who has a good head for business and can communicate the legal aspects or ramifications of a course of action while understanding the potential impact of timing and other contingencies. I particularly appreciate her understanding of maintaining momentum when you have it and her willingness to do what she can to move the process along without unnecessary, though sometimes customary, delays in the legal process. She is a consummate professional with a sharp mind and has my highest recommendation.

I was referred to Fiedler Law by another law professional and I was contacted within a couple hours of doing my web submission. Tom got me in quickly and instantly made me feel heard, in a time where I was at a very high-stress point. He was kind and knowledgeable, not mention resolved my issue with a better outcome than anticipated. I never was left wondering about an update, he personally updated me throughout and responded so quickly. I am thankful and appreciative and can't recommend his services enough! His office is also warm and inviting- the front office staff was also friendly and responsive (and there is a precious friendly dog that will greet you, if you're into it).

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
