I hired Charles Luk as my attorney for the purchase of my house in NJ. He was very attentive and knowledgeable, and was always responsive to my questions. He and his staff took care of everything and kept me informed all the way so there were no surprises. Everything went smoothly, unlike with another law office I used in the past which was a disaster. I am using Charles Luk as my future lawyer and will recommend him to all my friends and relatives.

The biggest complaint most people have about lawyers is that they don't communicate. Frank Reilly communicates. He listens acutely, responds appropriately, and stays in regular contact. He is also very, very good at election and administrative law.

Mr. Elliot has provided outstanding personal and business legal advice for me for several years. He advised me on setting up a business partnership, a trust, and wrote my will. He also advised me on a lawsuit involving my Mother which was extremely helpful in helping me monitor the case from several hundred miles away and expedited the gathering of evidence and witnesses. His help resulted in a favorable decision for my elderly Mother and the awarding of a judgement in her favor. His experience as a prosecuter in crimes against the elderly was most reassuring. He has my highest recommendation as a personal lawyer for either civil or criminal cases.

Ms. Welborn has represented me in several pieces of litigation and there are not enough superlatives I could use to express both my pleasure and gratitude for the work she has done on my behalf. She is hard-nosed when she needs to be with opposing counsel but also brings a sense of calm reason to every situation in terms of managing expectations for what possible outcomes could be reached. She is willing to fight for her clients but not simply to build a file for her firm. She has consistently put the best interests of my company ahead of all else. Ms. Welborn methodically prepares for the cases she handles and has always developed a legal strategy that is both workable and works. In the end, if you find yourself in need of a litigator you want a pit bull that is savvy, compassionate, committed, intelligent and tenacious. Ms. Welborn is all of those things but, more importantly, she wins - which is never a bad thing.

Without litigation the federal government conceded they erred and remedied the situation promptly. In addition Attorney Shaw represented me several other times on unrelated matters and I was quite satisfied with the results. I referred a friend who was involved in a difficult fight with a large company and Attorney Shaw was able to resolve it quickly in my frien'd favor.

We originally hired Bryon to set up our LLC – after trying the do-it-yourself “Nolo way” we discovered there was a lot more to it than meets the eye. He saved us a lot of wear and tear and was well worth the extremely fair fee he charged. Most important, Bryon has superior listening skills – he’s able to really tune into your issue and/or dilemma and then efficiently translate it into legal terms; from there he uses his uncanny ability to “think outside the box” and come up with solutions that protect you and your interests, while keeping you good with IRS, Franchise Tax, and really any other party your business is involved with. We unwittingly got into a sticky tax situation via some really bad advise from our previous accountant. Bryon came up with a solution that not only saved us huge headaches with the IRS, but also set us up to minimize, and in some cases eliminate, certain taxes. In addition, he didn’t just focus on solving the immediate issue at hand, but created a scenario that will allow us to seamlessly shift gears in the future and stay good with the IRS. Bryon has also helped us with managing a family trust; he clarified terms that previous attorneys were always vague about, and saved us from making errors that would have cost us a lot of tax dollars. Bryon is top notch; don’t let his friendly, easy manner fool you: his knowledge of the law is iron-clad, and he jumps right in to get down to work, always respectful of your bottom line when it comes to fees. We feel really fortunate to have found him.

Bob Hafner is simply an outstanding attorney if you need assistance with real estate transactions, wills, healthcare proxy’s, and legal help with your business/corporation. Bob Hafner has represented my wife and myself in 3 different real estate transactions. Recently We sold our primary home and purchased another primary home locally. He was outstanding in those two transactions. He responded to emails and phone calls promptly, the wife and I were reassured knowing we were well represented. Bob has also helped me purchase a 6 family property over 3 years ago and had the exact same experience. The wife and I have been so pleased with Bob that we also used his services for our wills and healthcare proxy’s, and he assisted us with a restaurant we used to own for our legal needs. You cannot ask for a more honest, ethical, and caring attorney in this area.

I earlier today spoke to Brad Linder of the Sawaya law firm. I am not a client. I actually have an attorney from a different law firm. I only called Sawyer about some questions I had that I did not feel my attorney was answering correctly. Brad was very professional and extremely helpful. Gave me every piece of information that I needed. He actually even told me that it would be in my best interest to stay with the attorney I had, as I would make less money if I acquired another attorney. I could not have asked for more. I give this law firm five stars, I would give more if possible.

I sought Jim's expertise in business owner exit strategies. His deep understanding of what owner-operated businesses need to know, need to prioritize and need to manage for maximum business sales price is impressive. I was very pleased with his focus on actions that would result in maximum upside for me. Jim "gets" the business of business - profitable growth, operating margins and strong business systems needed to turn the key in the door every day. If you are a business owner in San Antonio, TX who wants to make sure you get maximum fair market value for your business, Jim is for you. He is approachable, supportive and insightful. His deep experience in Texas law comes through in the advice he gives and in his insights as he presents options for your consideration. Unlike other attorneys whose legal discipline narrows their field of vision, Jim's capabilities lie in his ability to tie together multiple disciplines into what I can only describe as Strategic Legal Counsel. Our first meeting set the stage for on-going collaboration. You'll recognize within 20 minutes how his outward focus and gentle hand on your shoulder combine to make him a true business resource.

Baltazar R. Serna Jr. AKA Walter Serna did a fantastic job representing me during my DWI charge. With a very reasonable fee, he was able to get my charge reduced to a much lessor charge even with all the glaring evidence against me. He fought hard for me and truly cared for my well-being. I highly recommend him.

Wren Massey here...I was sentenced to four years in T. D.C.J. and Walley Hatch prosecuted my case. I've been "off paper" for almost two years now...it was the experience in there that helped me to form a close relationship with God and I've been a changed man because of the time served in the system. I was an addict out of control and God allowed my circumstances to land me behind bars on June 5, 2011 and cry out to Him for help.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
