Sarah settled my father's estate. She gave me an estimate of her price in advance. Sarah was very professional and called or emailed me when there was something for me to sign or discuss. She didn't waste my time and gave me the option to do some of the mailings, etc. which saved me money. She also handled the closing/title work for my father's property. Her total bill came in for less than what I was quoted.

Mr Santarelli (my second ATTY in the case) handled my case in the best way possible and with superior restraint and professionalism. Our opposition handled their case Pro Se. He was very knowledgeable in an area that is not his specialty. A case that should have been done in one or two visits to court took 3 1/2 years. Once Mr Santarelli came on board, he dealt with mistakes prior to his serivce and things became streamlined and went much quicker and more stuctured.

After six years and tens of thousands of dollars spent, we finally changed lawyers, then our debtor declared bankruptcy. Referred to Mr. Hurley and couldn't be happier. He is fair, honest, realistic and kept us in the loop for the whole ordeal. A very reasonable and moral attorney, no dirty tricks or pumped up bills---hard to find. I wish he lived on our side of the mountains.

Hired Jaime's law firm to assist me with a single family home purchase that was a "for sale by owner." I worked with Jaime exclusively on the transaction which was complete in less than 30 days. She handled all communications with the seller and took care of all of the necessary documents. She even scheduled the inspection and appraisal. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend her to anyone needing legal advice or representation on a real estate matter.

I had no clue what to do as a single mother when I was only guaranteed so many hours. This made me ineligible for benefits which included health insurance. I suffered from severe neck and back pain, extreme enough that I needed to call 911. The hospital did a cardiac work up since my symptoms mimicked a heart attack. I was sent home soon after they ruled out cardiac abnormalities with no diagnosis what so ever besides neck pain. No further orders were done and they prescribed a minimal amount of pain meds, that didn't even take the edge off. I went to a few different doctors who simply ordered different medications. Finally after an MRI that I had to pay on a credit card I was ordered a series of three cortisone injections all of which I also put on my credit card. I ended up maxing out five credit cards after ongoing problems with this. I owned a home and car and thought I was goin to lose them. A friend recommended Mark Brunner since he was a life saver for her. He was so knowledgable and explained everything in detail and made sure I knew what I was signing. All I had to do was bring all my bills, deed, and title to the secretary and she took care of the rest. I thought my case was pretty complex because there was so much more involved. I felt he would have had to spend several hours on my case. He was prompt when arriving at the court house. The secretary was thoughtful enough to make a map and reminded me when the court case was. He told me exactly what to expect and knew what I had to do when I entered the courtroom. I was amazed about the whole thing and would highly recommend his office to anyone.

I was involved in a lawsuit for several thousand dollars in unpaid rent that I thought had been paid by my former roommate. Ms. Carnagie was able to walk me through all the paperwork and fully explain my options. She negotiated with the apartment complex and was able to reach a settlement which I could afford. I am extremely grateful for all her help in the situation!

I had been involved in a Landlord-Tenant dispute for 2 years and went through many lawyers and various collections methods. After exhausting what I thought was my last option I started working with John and I was able to settle the balance in full and with relative ease. John was always timely about asking questions, providing information, and following up after big dates. John made sure to break things down easily so that I could understand fully what my options were and what the plan was. Thanks again!

Kirby Clements is a simply outstanding attorney. He handled my case with professionalism and candor. I was very nervous about my case and its outcome, but he was right there with me every step of the way. He never missed a court date, kept me updated on every situation regarding my case, stood his ground before the opposing counsel, and developed an excellent rapport with the presiding judge. It wasn't too long before he had the opposing counsel ducking for cover and the judge eating out of his hand (smile). I would definitely refer Kirby to anyone (except the opposing side) looking for legal counsel. E.

Ms. Whiting is a child advocate and puts her heart and soul into her clients. She represented my children during a nasty divorce case several years ago. The thing that I respected the most is her complete and utter honesty, even when it wasn't what I always wanted to hear. She listens to both sides (parents) , however, she puts the childrens needs first.

I was given honest detailed facts of my tax status that opened up my eyes. I have hope to understand the "how" and "why" from a long journey of financial abuse. I have hope of more spousal injured, identity discoveries I'm not aware of. Lawyer Steve Sibley has given me great hope of discovering the " honest to God truth", no one has been able to. Just in consultation, I was given honest facts on my status that was alarming. It was honest and educating. I have hope again to continue working with attorney Sibley according to protocol measures.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
