I am an attorney in Salt Lake City Utah. I located Mr. Sanders on Avvo, when one of my small business clients was sued in federal court for the District of Texas. Mr. Sanders was responsive, provided urgent assistance in the case and directed us to a local published opinion almost directly on point. His responsiveness allowed my client to make some important decisions quickly. I was very impressed with Mr. Sanders.

Mr. Kevin Soucek is very thorough in drafting up corporate contracts, making sure all details are pointed out. He has a great understanding of the law and wording contracts according to your company's needs. I have had Mr. Kevin Soucek do all my contracts from Confidentiality Agreements, NDA's for pattern making companies and manufactures, and Purchase Agreements. He is simply brilliant at what he does and I highly recommend him to any company that needs an intelligent and diligent attorney.

I recently came into possession of a building that had an illegal basement apartment. After offering them time and money to leave, they refused and I had an issue in my hand. The first lawyer I went to was in Chinatown and I assumed that it would be cheap but after a consultation with him and the price he was asking, I learned that he was going to rip me off, rather than it being a bargain. Searching google I stumbled upon Jakubowitz and Chuang by accident and decided to give them a try. I had a free consultation with William Chuang and found that he was very professional and reasonable. I did my own research about holdover cases before looking for lawyers and found that he told me everything and cleared up some misconceptions I had. I was about to do something stupid and he saved me from that mistake. The best part of the consultation is that he itemized all his fees. The first lawyer I went to merely gave me a price and expected me to pay. I saved around 600 dollars for the first legal steps with William. When in court with my tenants, he told me what would happen and I received exactly the result that I expected. Evicting my tenants was a very arduous journey but William made it easier by explaining all the steps involved and doing what he said he was going to do. Always available by phone, text, or email. When I received a letter from the housing department about the illegal basement tenants, I emailed William and he got back to me within an hour. Even on Sundays he responds which is rare for lawyers or any professionals. I'm going to have him be my personal go to lawyer from now on.

I've worked with Scott Sisun over the past 3 years. Not only is he a pleasure to work with, but he is knowledgeable and provides sound advice with his clients' best interest in mind. As a marketer, he has not only helped our business obtain the proper IP credentials for our brands, but he has come in to speak to our marketing teams and educate the importance of trademarks/patents and how they work. I would recommend Scott as a phenomenal attorney and a brilliant educator.

I found him to be 100% honest extremely intelligent, and also someone who is willing to work tirelessly on behalf of his clients. In a world where lawyers often are viewed in so negatively, I found Vivek to be a breath of fresh air. In my opinion , he stands out as not only a brilliant attorney but one of impeccable integrity. While an officer (President) and director of a publicly-traded company, I had the unfortunate experience of defending a number of lawsuits (stemming from one disgruntled source) that, in my opinion (and ultimately the courts' as well), were without merit. Furthermore, the directors of the corporation were also individually named as defendants which added significantly to the drama. Stuart was recommended by our counsel. Thank goodness. The litigation was multi-jurisdictional and the plaintiffs' counsel was "creative" to say the least. Stuart's expert understanding of the rules of civil procedure - in addition to his significant understanding of the substantive law - was invaluable.

Doug, and his firm, have worked with us on 3 patent infringement lawsuits, a lawsuit concerning copyright protections vs. Freedom of Information rights that is now at the Connecticut State Supreme Court, the writing and prosecution of numerous patent applications and the filing of numerous copyright registrations. Both Doug and his firm have produced excellent results for us. They work closely with us, educate us and listen to us and the results of their efforts show. While Doug and his firm are located a significant distance from us, the communication, collaboration and team work have been seamless. In addition, Doug as an individual has accomplished a great deal. I respect him a great deal both personally and professionally. Mike

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
