I found Amrita when I was looking into buying a franchise. Not only did she do a thorough review of my franchise agreement, explaining every clause in detail, she also took care of my business licenses. She made the whole process smooth and stress free for a business novice like me. She was always available, flexible and responded in a timely manner. I would recommend her anytime.

Jennifer Lane was recommended by my company's internal IP team to write a new patent application. Although she has an engineering background, she was new to the invention subject, which relies heaviy on quantum physical chemistry. I was very impressed with how rapidly she mastered the concepts and produced a draft application. The final draft was completed with fewer corrections and much less of my own time than is usually required for our internal process.

A friend referred us to Jehiel Baer to help with our case against Allstate. We were pleased and impressed by his services and guidance. He walked us through the whole process, addressed our concerns, and always available for questions. We truly appreciate his honesty and willingness to help without collecting cost upfront. He got our case to dismiss quickly and made certain Allstate cannot return to sue us again. This gave us a peace of mind and helped eliminate lots of unnecessary headaches. We are so thankful to our friend for recommending us to Jehiel.

Karthik took over my patent during the office action stage. My previous patent attorneys were proving to be too expensive and I had started to run out of funds. An alum from my BFA program suggested I contact him and I could not be more pleased with his work. We received our issue notification last week. Yippee!

I work with Bill professionally with a variety of clients from small, newer biotech companies to larger established companies. I am a consulting in-house intellectual property director (both scientist and patent agent). Because I am trusted to provide expert outside counsel for my clients, I consistently turn to Bill. He does his homework; he is trustworthy and very supportive of the goals of the client. He provides expert advice on patent law, yet always has the big picture of developing a profitable company from a business development perspective. Thus, he is multi-faceted in all aspects of business law. He is kind and approachable and one of the best in the business. I always enjoy the opportunity to recommend Bill and to work with him. He is very intelligent and the one person that you want in the Boardroom with you when you are in any type of conference.

I have had the pleasure of working with Erin for the past 9 months or so. She has been my primary resource as I have been negotiating numerous six and seven figure contracts with a variety of partners. These particular contracts required a very quick turnaround and I found Erin to be extraordinarily responsive. . . often having revisions/suggestions/comments back to me within hours of having recieved the documents.. . . in my particular situaion, this was crucial to completing the volume of agreements that were needed.

I consulted Joe for legal advice regarding the formation of my tech startup. He's an excellent listener, thoroughly aware of both short-term and long-term potential issues, and very sharp. As a bonus, he's also a pleasant guy to chat with. Even though I'm just in the seed stage of my startup, Joe still makes me feel like a valued client. He's responded to all of my email inquiries (about a half dozen, to date) within 24 hours. I will be using Joe for my future legal needs. I highly recommend him.

I found working with Joseph Skocilich to be extremely helpful. He gave me advice having to do with copyright and licensing music for my band (primarily original compositions). He also drafted a master use/licensing sync form for us to use. I found Mr. Skocilich to be thorough and thoughtful in his work and invested in helping me understand the "why" behind what needed to get done. I think all non-lawyers would agree that some of the paperwork can be a bit overwhelming and Mr. Skocilich took the time to explain things. As a small business owner I appreciated having someone willing to take the time to make sure everything was done correctly. I would highly recommend working with Mr. Skocilich and will go back to him next time I need advice on legal matters.

Jessica Mathews is a superb business attorney. She is thoughtful and practical when negotiating deal terms and partners with her clients to devise creative solutions to roadblocks to finalizing a deal. She zeros in on the details and quickly sorts the practical risks from the theoretical risks. On top of her lawering skills, she's also personable, fun to work with, and has a great sense of humor.

When preparing to file for patents on mortgage and real estate risk forecasting tools, a number of prominent attorneys were interviewed. Most advised against the effort. Jerry stated that the developments were ahead of the curve in terms of what the Chief Patent Examiner would recognize, but that it was likely that, in time, the government would have to adopt a new position or the US would lose its competitive edge in the global market place. Although it was not an easy process, we were able to obtain multiple patents which I attribute to Jerry Nagae's unfailing diligence and legal expertise.

We worked with Margaret for over 2 years and the entire time, I do not know if it was us or her that was more passionate about winning! She kept our best interest in mind at all times, even if that meant prolonging the case. It was a very long process, but we were never worried and always incredibly satisfied with Margaret's professionalism. I've worked with a handful of attorney's and have yet to work with anyone who is as passionate about doing what is right!!!

Referred by our usual corporate counsel, David was engaged to help us pursue a number of different companies who had copied and used photos that we create as part of our business. he was diligent and thorough. his apporach and relationship allowed us to pursue them financially. He was able to secure payments for damages from the firms and we hope to use his services to pursue others in the future. It appears that other companies will steal photos again in the future and its nice to know David will be available to help us stop them.

Attorney Hackbarth helped me to recover money I invested in a fraudulent investment scheme. He took the time to explain all of my options and explained legal ideas to me in plain English that I could understand. He also returned all of my phone calls and always made time for me even though I am sure I was one of his smaller clients. He was always very courteous and despite being a lawyer, had a good sense of humor. I highly recommend him.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
