A portion of my property was being bought by the State for a road expansion and I had a question about how it would affect my taxes. A very knowledgeable attorney gave a good explanation in a short telephone conversation. Since that was my only issue I wasn't even charged for the time he spent on the call. I highly recommend this firm.

Having filed patents with more than 10 different patent attorneys over the years, I must say that Ben is without a doubt THE BEST I have worked with! He and I have worked together now on 8 separate applications in the space of biotechnology and software. Ben is remarkable in his ability and willingness to understanding new technologies at the deepest levels and is able to provide real insight into how best to generalize and protect the ideas. He puts in the extra effort and does background research necessary to bring himself to the level of expert in the field and then is able to fill in many of the gaps needed to build out a truly robust application. He asks the right questions and is very good at addressing ambiguity. His writing style makes the final applications an absolute pleasure to read with clear, pedagogical presentation of concepts and great strategic flow. The idea often ends up way better than when it started and I end up thinking, "Wow!". I can't recommend Ben highly enough!!

Mark has been my patent attorney for over 24 years, he has filed 5 patents for me with 4 issued and one pending. All of the patents were oil field related equipment and Marks understanding and general engineering skills were essential in evaluating the patentability, type of drawings required, writing and laying out the claims of the patents. His legal skills and knowledge of the patent laws kept me informed of the all the requirements of the patent process. His professionalism and ability to communicate legal requirements in layman terms were essential to help me make decisions on how to proceed through a complicated legal process. Plus his people skills are great, its a pleasure to work with him.

Mark worked with us on a complex piece of IP-related litigation. He did a great job helping us through depositions hearings and in dealing with a large, well-funded and aggressive opponent. He is calm under pressure, determined and tenacious. He won the respect of all our staff and of the opposing attorneys for his resolution and intellect. I recommend him highly.

We originally hired Bryon to set up our LLC – after trying the do-it-yourself “Nolo way” we discovered there was a lot more to it than meets the eye. He saved us a lot of wear and tear and was well worth the extremely fair fee he charged. Most important, Bryon has superior listening skills – he’s able to really tune into your issue and/or dilemma and then efficiently translate it into legal terms; from there he uses his uncanny ability to “think outside the box” and come up with solutions that protect you and your interests, while keeping you good with IRS, Franchise Tax, and really any other party your business is involved with. We unwittingly got into a sticky tax situation via some really bad advise from our previous accountant. Bryon came up with a solution that not only saved us huge headaches with the IRS, but also set us up to minimize, and in some cases eliminate, certain taxes. In addition, he didn’t just focus on solving the immediate issue at hand, but created a scenario that will allow us to seamlessly shift gears in the future and stay good with the IRS. Bryon has also helped us with managing a family trust; he clarified terms that previous attorneys were always vague about, and saved us from making errors that would have cost us a lot of tax dollars. Bryon is top notch; don’t let his friendly, easy manner fool you: his knowledge of the law is iron-clad, and he jumps right in to get down to work, always respectful of your bottom line when it comes to fees. We feel really fortunate to have found him.

Louis took the time to call me back and listen to my concerns. He was able to advise me of my rights, explain the process of the law suit I was involved in, and recommend how to move forward. I think his personal attention to his future and current cases make him a great choice.

I have a nonprofit pet charity. When an "adopter" tried to flip the adopted bird on the Internet, Bray & his team worked hard to ensure his safe & quick return. Bray was very committed & took his life as seriously as we did. Bray & his team are a RARE find & the success of the birds return is greatly appreciated!

Bob prepared a perfect letter in a matter regarding CBS news. We believe that the letter served as a deterrent to a story that could have been detrimental to my company. Bob was timely and kept me in the loop every step of the way. He even watched to he news story and gave his input as to how the story aired. I consulted with Mr. Nash on an intellectual property matter. He was very informative and went out of his way to make sure we / he had covered very avenue to help me. Then when he found out I was an artist, and had a business painting ceiling murals for children's hospitals as well as fine art, he told me so much on how to protect my art. I've never forgotten how professional and intelligent, as well as nice, he was to me. He literally spent at least an hour with me, it was well worth the money! I highly recommend Mr. Nash.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
