Stuart definitely went above and beyond for me. Most times when a professional is paid for their service(s) they are done, but not Stuart. Even a few months after the closing on my property, he contacted me personally to remind me to file for my homestead exemption, and with details on where to go, and even gave me the parcel #, so I would know what to do. I even had to call him to ask a couple of questions about the form, and he personally took the time to answer those questions. I will definitely use him in the future...he's a great guy!

I started working with Beth Prather and her staff several years ago after my husband was diagnosed with dementia and it became apparent that long term care was inevitable. I have the life care plan for him. Ms. Prather, her paralegal Tricia, and the case workers have all been extremely helpful and compassionate. They did all the paperwork for Medicaid application and gave me detailed instructions as to what I must do myself. My financial advisor attended two of the meeting with me and Beth instructed her concerning the steps to be taken in that area. Her presence was welcomed. Since my husband is facing an extended nursing home stay, I need periodic help with paper work regarding Medicaid. They are always there for me. The relationship I have with Beth and her staff feels more like friendship than business.

As my sisters Power of Attorney, I hired Rob to assist in the sale of her residence as she was in bankruptcy. He asked why I was not using her original bankruptcy attorney. I advised him it was not a good experience and felt she had been egregiously overcharged. He explained the RARA fee process to me and it became apparent there were several unscrupulous billings to her. With this information I was able to file a complaint with the Bankruptcy Trustee and after a hearing in Santa Barbara Bankruptcy Court the judge ruled against $20,000 of this attorney's fees and also ordered the reimbursement of $3600 to my sister. Without Rob's knowledge and assistance I would probably not have pursued the righting of this wrongdoing. And as far as Rob's work on the sale of my sisters house, he was very competent, the process was very smooth and he always kept me informed of the progress. I would highly recommend Rob Traylor as the experience was great and he restored my faith in humanity.

I have dealt with Mr. Vale on many occasions and have found him to be extremely professional, knowledgeable, reliable and down to earth. He truly knows his stuff and has a real gift of being able to explain the complicated avenues of estate planning and trust execution in a way that anyone can understand. As a real estate professional, it is very important for me to know that who I refer my clients to will be well taken care of with the utmost professionalism & knowledge. Bob is all that and more. Personally, Bob has helped my family with our complicated estate plan and I would have no one else besides Bob handle it. Bob is a rare find and you will be lucky to have him as your lawyer. I highly recommend Robert Vale and his staff...they are the best!

I made a lot of phone calls before finding Kathleen. A number of the people I talked to were slick attorneys that wanted nothing more than to upsell their services. I was lucky enough to find Kathleen on a review website. I planned to retain Kathleen for a post-nuptial agreement, prior to buying a house. After the first phone call, she told me how I could do it cheaper. We then made an appointment to meet. She drove across the bay on a weeknight, to meet me at my home after work. It turns out, there was a low cost legal workaround for my situation. Have you ever heard of a lawyer that looks out for clients like that? Not only did she save me a ton of money on my post-nup, she also answered some questions I had about a trust I have. Kathleen is an incredibly knowledgeable, honest and down-to-earth estate planning attorney. Once I buy my house, I plan to hire her to complete my estate plan.

I had a horrible time at a local hospital while my dad was ill. He couldn't ambulate, and was incredibly miserable after an extended wait in the ER waiting room. I called, and asked what words were needed and who I needed to speak them to in order to get my dad help. Mr. Moore was concise, considerate, and extremely helpful. 10/10 would recommend.

Extremely impressed with Mr. Charlton. I contacted him regarding an elder care issue and wanted to set up an appointment to discuss the situation. When I called Mr. Charlton he took the time to ask lots of questions and we ended up having our consultation on the phone right then and there. He offered solid insight and information as well as recommendations on how to proceed. I really appreciated his honesty and candor. There are not many lawyers who would take the time to counsel a new client they haven't even met! He saved me a trip to his office and was generous with his time. I would recommend consulting with him.

All I can say is "What a great experience"! Ian was extremely informative and very helpful to all of my questions and concerns pertaining to wills, probate, trusts, and my estate planning. The process to get my revocable trust set up was very seamless. I highly recommend Ian's services. This is an attorney you can trust! After doing my due diligence, I came to the conclusion that anyone who meets one or more of the following factors should consider a Revocable Trust: 1. Owns all or part of their own business; 2. Has a life insurance policy; 3. Owns real estate other than their homestead 4. Has children; 5. Does not want their assets passed to their children in an immediate lump sum but rather over a longer period of time to ensure creditor protection and proper money management; 6. Wants to avoid a formal probate that could take over a year to complete and can cost 3-4% of the gross value of all assets subject to probate administration. Thanks again for all of your help Ian!

Wayne handled a very complicated Estate for me and I couldn’t be more impressed. I chose Gillespie Shields and Taylor because my brother in law used them for his Last Will and Testament. Wayne sat down with me and went over the responsibilities of a Personal Representative and guided me through the process. My brother in law died unexpectedly and within a month my sister, his wife, also passed away. I was in Arizona but from Ohio, I needed someone who could help me keep on top of things and Wayne did just that for me. I was able to contact him as needed. When I would contact him by phone or email, he responded back to me fairly quickly. I was treated with respect and I felt I was in good hands. I have spent my career working with attorneys, some good and a lot not so good. Wayne impressed me with his skill as an attorney and I would recommend him to anyone who needs an Estate attorney.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
