I entrusted my case to the James Vernon and Weeks firm and I could t be happier. Craig Vernon ultimately took over my case and was a professional from the very beginning. He or his paralegal quickly answered any questions I had and I was always consulted with every step of the way. I felt comfortable knowing that Craig was handling my case because of his prior experience in cases similar to mine. Craig Vernon is a compassionate lawyer who will fight for his clients.

Being in the legal profession myself, I've witnessed Mr. Kelly's fierce and unforgiving representation of his clients. I had also heard he was a brilliant attorney who stays on top of his caseload. I recently took a reluctant family member for a consult, who was despondent over an employment issue. Upon meeting with Mr. Kelly, his reputation for knowledge of the law preceded him; however, I wasn't expecting him to be as humble as he is and to take the amount of time he did with us. He was very attentive to the individual issues involved and laid out options moving forward. Then, when he stated he wasn't as well versed in this particular cause of action as a few other attorneys would be, he offered to write a memo to a few collegues to schedule a consultation if my family member decided to proceed in that direction. I was floored. Not only did he take time out of his busy schedule to meet with us, he was HONEST. I can't thank him enough for what he has done for my family member, and for reminding me that there are attorneys who truly care for clients/potential clients and not just about billable hours. I would recommend Mr. Kelly to anyone I know, and if I should ever need an attorney in his area of expertise, there would be no question who I would call. Thank you Mr. Kelly. Most respectfully.

It was very easy to work with Mr. Redsich. He is easy to reach and talk to. He was very insightful and knowledgeable about workers comp. I liked that he helped me understand what the adjuster was trying to do and my options. I always felt like I was receiving honest advice and he truly cared about what I was going through.

Rick Custin was recommend to me by a friend who assisted him on a previous matter. It was a pleasure working with Rick and I am so glad he was with me every step of the way in my hearing process. In my distraught state of attempting to navigate the court system and find resolution, Rick went above and beyond what I expected. He educated me on the court system processes, did a superior job at researching my options based on previous court cases and represented me in the most ethical and helpful manner I could have asked. Not only does he have superb litigation skills, but also Rick was extremely personable and supportive in working with me and I am grateful for his expertise and passion for the legal system and those he represents.

The Social Security process can be very long & arduous! No one would dispute that. Ultimately you want a lawyer who can step up to the plate and fight as hard as possible to WIN your case. Karen Karl is that lawyer & much more! I have heard countless & countless stories of other local & state disability lawyers that do not return phone calls & don't seem like they really have a grip on your personal issues. Karen's personalized attention is off the charts. A truly capable, experienced, friendly, lovely & compassionate woman. I feel extremely blessed to have found Karen & eternally indebted to her for all her hard work!

I hired Butler Viadro (Chris Viadro was my attorney) to represent me in my worker's comp injury case and am extremely grateful that I did. I was not sure if I should hire anybody, let alone a firm that I knew virtually nothing about... I am happy to say however that the decisions to hire an attorney, and to hire Chris Viadro of Butler Viadro, were beyond "smart" decisions and if I had to decide all over again, I would not change a thing. Chris was very knowledgeable in worker's rights as well as injury laws and stipulations... and where he had questions about my case or my specific situation, he was honest about it and did the necessary research to find the answer and/or the best direction to take every time. Mr. Viadro is professional and it shows in meeting him in person as well as in his communications; with myself and with my worker's comp insurance adjusters alike. The best part of hiring Chris was not feeling pressured. He was patient, supportive and understanding, while also being honest and up front at all times. He never attempted to persuade me in any decision and always left me feeling in control and able to make the decision that was best for me and my family. I only have one criticism of my experience: Because I hold service providers and professionals to the highest standards in all areas of my life, I have to say there could have been a little more time spent with me and on my case to a) help understand some of my questions better and b) be more explanatory in some areas where I had questions and wanted to understand the process more deeply. This being said, Chris has been accepting of this criticism and has promised to get to know future clients regarding their level of need rather than assume all have the same level of need. If I had a reason to hire Chris again, I would feel completely comfortable and trusting doing so. In fact, it would put my mind at ease knowing he was working on my case. I would highly recommend Butler Viadro to anybody needing legal advocacy and representation in a worker's injury case.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
