I paid Robert Todd $1200 to draft a privacy policy and client contract. The money was paid up front and I was told that my documents would be completed within the week. A week later, I never heard anything from Robert. I then started calling and emailing, only to reach his assistant, who said he will have him give me a call (which he never did, nor did he respond to my emails) When Robert finally called back, he told me that he had been sick and that is why the documents had not been completed. Giving him the benefit of the doubt, I stayed patient, and he said they would be done in 3 more days. 3 days went by and again, nothing from Robert. When I spoke with him he said it's taking longer than he thought it would but I would be extremely happy with the finished product and he would have a rough draft to me on Monday (this was on Friday). Once Tuesday came, with nothing from Robert, I called again and left an email saying that if he does not have it finished then I would like my money back. The next day, he emailed me a copy of the client contract which wasn't even close to matching our needs and what we discussed!!!! I emailed Robert with questions about the document and never heard from him again. Please, if you are looking for an attorney, explore all other options before hiring Robert D. Todd!

I felt that after he was paid that he was no longer interested in my case. I as client should not have to call my attorney several times to ask status on my case. Do to his negligence my case could not go forward do to loss time to respond. I lost my case. Which was $7,000 gone fast. I suggest find attorney that is reliable in followIng up with their client.

I would caution against hiring Elana. While it seems like she has extensive experience, she cannot read basic information on a case, look up relevant statutes and is the epitome of a lawyer who runs the clock to waste your time and money. She is unresponsive and slow to take action. I hired another lawyer immediately after firing her and the case was closed a month later, as that lawyer spent the time needed to understand the technicalities of the case.

I hired Shaun Reid to help me fight a workplace discrimination case. Shaun suggested to file a complaint to Division of Human Right, and he ensured me that i will be protected against retaliation from my supervisor. In August of 2014, I received a position letter to dismiss my complaint due to no evidence of “adverse employment action" by Division of Human Right. After the dismissal, I was trying to reach Shaun, and he never respond back to me. I called his office, and left messages to his cell phone several times without any response. I spent $3,000 with Shaun's complaint letter, and one weak rebuttal letter. I could have written these two letters myself, and maybe getting better response. The worst thing is Shaun's disappearance. I got even more harassment from my supervisor after my initial complaint to Division of Human Right ! Now I am about to get fire, and I don't have enough money to hire another lawyer. Please don't waste your money on this lawyer.

Although Ms. Hodges is pleasant and knowledgeable, she is definitely not responsive or adept at explaining the process to a client. Although I clearly expressed my concerns at her lack of communication, I was repeatedly "brushed off" with excuses. My situation required an aggressive legal advocate. Unfortunately, she fell extremely short of what was required.

We hired Ms. Holman to represent our son with an employment-related case. She was pleasant at first, almost too pleasant. She called my husband back a few times to follow up and see if we were interested in meeting with her to discuss things further. This should have been the first red flag. Any attorney with time to follow up with prospective clients must not have a full caseload, and there is a reason for that. We read the reviews here on Yelp and thought we'd give her a chance anyway...big mistake. Once she was paid in full for her services we never heard another thing from Ms. Holman. She also allowed our son's case to expire with the EEOC 90-day cutoff, which ruined his chances for recourse through the legal system against his previous employer. In addition, she never assisted our son with receiving the unemployment funds she claimed she could get for him. She is filled with promises and pumps herself up to be this amazing attorney, but she fails to meet the high level of expertise/standards she claims she has. We filed a grievance against her with the State Bar of Nevada, to which they sent her a letter requesting her response. In addition, we sent her a demand letter (via certified mail and email) for payment in full. As of today, she has returned all of our original funds. I would never recommend her to anyone for representation. Unless you like headaches and irritation, it is our opinion that it would be highly beneficial to avoid any of the so-called services she offers.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.

  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
