Ten years ago,my landlord tried to implement an illegal rental increase on my unit, and I sought assistance from attorney,Ronald Gilchrist. No only did his advice save me from eviction, but I currently reside at that property, defeating all of the court motions filed against me by the landlord with the knowledge of the law I acquired from attorney Gilchrist. He is a God send to anyone needing legal advice, the most brilliant legal mind I have ever encountered, and a really nice person.

Mr. King took my case against a terrible landlord. Thankfully we sought and followed his counsel before we signed the lease. When the landlord decided not to follow his end of the contract, we were able to take action with Mr. King's continued guidance. Had we not gotten his expert advice from the start we might have been in a very different position. With his counsel and swift response we were able to resolve the issue out of court and heavily in our favor. I would advise anyone to work with Mr. King. He is incredibly smart and down to earth. He made the process easy to understand and knew exactly what to do and when to do it. Simply excellent!

Mr. Butler assisted me with both a real estate and bankruptcy case and I was extremely pleased and impressed with his legal expertise, professionalism, and superior ability to strategize and analyze all facets of my case to present my cases in court. I would highly recommend him to anyone who is seeking legal counsel in the Washington, D.C. area. Mr. Butler continually kept me abreast of each phase of the case, explained each maneuver, so that I was always well-informed. Further, his rates are competitive, reasonable and you will be very satisfied with his representation of you in court and feel confident that you have someone acting as an advocate on your behalf. I can not thank him enough!

Catherine E. Schmitt is a fantastic real estate attorney. I have worked with her on many cases and through two different title companies.. She really knows her stuff. Even with difficult clients, she is no-nonsense but warm. She welcomes all questions and makes even the most challenging title work - workable - if its legal. A stickler for getting it right. Did I mention she's a Marine? Semper Fi!

As a current client of Ms. Levadas I would highly recommend her legal services for any legal matter. She is very knowledgeable with the different codes regarding the law and she is extremely reliable in regards to filling out necessary documents to the court on time and keeping you informed regarding your case. She makes herself readily available to answer any of your questions or address any concerns that you have regarding your case. Ms. Levadas is not only my lawyer for my late mom's estate, but she has become a very close friend to the family. She is enthusiastic about what she does and she will keep your best interest in mind for each decision she makes. I truly feel grateful to have had her appointed by the court to my team when my mom was incapacitated in the hospital. As a result of her excellent services, my family and I have retained her for other legal matters.

"During the time when I had been grieving while being pulled in many directions with legal things I knew nothing about, Ms. Sorge represented me on a very delicate and complex legal and family matter, ( and unfortunately...dispute) she demonstrated a total control of the issues without "sidelining" me, explaining every document, every move - the entire situation step by step. Her patience and confidence in attending to the matter allowed me the chance to grieve while knowing her dedication and attention to detail, comprehensive knowledge of what had been set up and what needed to be done and prevented what could have broken our family apart. Words cannot explain my gratitude and I want to thank her and wish her continued good luck and know she will have a long and prosperous career.

Richard F Silber is not only an attorney but a caring person who handled my case with professionalism every step of the way. He is honest and will keep you informed about what is happening in your case. I worked with Richard for over 4 years as my case involved a lot of research and time. He values his clients opinions and is very knowledgeable. I feel that as long and detailed as my case was, Richard never gave less than 100%. I would recommend Richard Silber for your case. Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
