I am a single parent who hired Ms. Peck after having already been through the ringer with the wrong attorney and had pretty much given up hope in the legal system and TOO MUCH money towards the fight for common sense (let kids have both parents and stop fighting just for the fight, which will only cause us both to be broke). My X didn't care about our dwindling 401k and our son crying to talk to his dad nightly. Everything was a volleyball game to her, money and our kids. Her attorney played the game too, which showed he had no agenda other than to make money. Peck was so decent I was worried, could a "decent" attorney help me win in this disaster? The end result was that Peck stopped the games and knew exactly what steps to take so the legal system did actually work! The games were no longer played and the best possible outcome was reached, in believe it or not, a fairly quickly manner based on the circumstances. I learned that big firms are just that, big. I learned that "popular" names don't make the attorney great. Peck is the best! I am forever grateful to her.

I have had Lisa work on a number of legal issues for me over the past several years and find she is an outstanding attorney. Her ability to frame and identify the relevant legal issues in a particular matter is unmatched, based on my experiences with her. Lisa is very thorough in her research, and preparation of documents. She is one of the few lawyers that I know that will take the extra time and effort with her client in explaining complex legal issues. Her communication skills, both oral and written, are superb. If you have any legal issue at all, I highly recommend Lisa Pennock. Lisa is absolutely trustworthy, knowledgeable and a very intelligent attorney.

I have used Jay Filler in three civil matters. When my father died I retained Jay Filler to settle his estate. A year later I used Jay Filler to represent me when I directly sold the family home without a realtor . I also retained Jay Filler to amend a family revocable living trust. Last year when my mother in law died, her family hired him upon my suggestion and again everyone was very satisfied with him. I felt he was very knowledgeable and diligent. I would highly recommend his services.

Attorney Hofstetter, Mom passed away and I was given the executorship of her estate. I found Attorney Hofstetter's charges very reasonable. He gave me solid guidance through the probate courts. We were being sued by my moms condo association, my sisters could not get along with each other, and creditors were knocking on our door. Attorney Hofstetter was very knowledgeable of all probate laws. He would advise me on the least expensive way of how to handle each situation. He immediately stopped the condo association from taking over my mothers condo. He guided me through the sibling fighting and he resolved all credit issues with her estate. I would use him again if the need ever arrises again. He is very courteous and listens to your concerns. I want to thank him for getting us through this difficult situation.

Vonda K. Vaughn represented me this past year for my divorce case. From the moment I set foot in her office---I experienced a level of professionalism, strength and confidence...along with a heart and conscience, that is rarely seen...these days. She's an an excellent listener who knows the value of paying attention to details. She has the competency and commitment required to accomplish the task...or challenge at hand---and does so in the most thorough of manners. My case was an extremely difficult one: Ours was a long-term marriage, (26+ years), my position at work had just been "dissolved", and there was a significant income disparity. The "energy" behind the difficulties was, in large part, due...from the very onset...to the adversarial tone set forth by my now former husband. Added to this were the continual challenges that arose from the various stances in positions that he held onto. Vonda had the tenacity and "bite" it takes to navigate our way through a myriad of challenges, such as researching, discovering the existence of...and then "hunting-down" benefits that my (former) husband failed to disclose, such as: ▪︎ a viable pension from a previous employer ▪︎ sources of non-qualified deferred compensation he was receiving...including a less-encountered type of benefit, yet common amongst upper-level executives---known as a SRIP, (Supplemental Retirement Income Plan). Even items that were disclosed during the initial "Discovery" period---though they were valuable benefits to me--- added to the complexity of the situation...and required her on-going involvement, monitoring and collaboration with others. They included: ▪︎ 2 different types of pensions from his current employer ▪︎ a 401(k) Savings Plan, also from his current employer These benefits, including the ones already mentioned, above them, had to go through the formal process of being divided between the two of us. This process is known as a "QDRO", (Qualified Domestic Relations Order) and was a lengthy one, that was done in a mathematically-scientific manner---adhering to strict standards as set forth by my former husband's current and previous employers. A lot of "back-and-forth" was required during this process. So many "hoops" to jump through...and making sure to "cross" all the "t"s...and "dotting" every "i". This..again...was where Vonda's attention to detail and ongoing patience was truly amazing. Vonda fought for me...she was my Advocate. She would be aggressive...yet tempered with a measure of cool, self-control. Throughout the case, in a variety of situations, she exhibited a remarkable ability to set boundaries---when and where they were needed. This valuable skill speaks to the uniqueness of her abilities. While she was knowledgeable in so many areas of the law---she would not hesitate, when necessary, to reach-out and draw from the invaluable resources that exist, and are there to support her, at a firm such as The Gitlin Law Firm. So...while Vonda "had-my-back"---attorneys gifted and skilled in various areas of the law---along with an amazing support-staff...had hers. This...along with so many other reasons...gave me the assurance that I had chosen the RIGHT attorney. The RIGHT law firm. Representation. It's a powerful thing.....when it's done WELL. I have...and will continue to recommend Vonda Vaughn of The Gitlin Law Firm to anyone who finds themselves navigating their way through the challenging, difficult...and painful process of Divorce.

Doug Morrison was able to help us avoid litigation and stay out of bankruptcy. He was responsive and professional throughout the process, and really helped us during a stressful time. He is a bit of a fast talker and gets right to the point, so make sure you stop him to ask questions. Overall, though, he is excellent.

Andrew got a quick handle on a complicated OP that was filed vindicatively and he handled it shrewdly and swiftly. His advice was always on-point and even when the other party was willing to resolve it through a compromise, Andrew wasn't afraid to take the case to court. Ultimately the other party dismissed it and that was due solely to Andrew's sharp assessment of the facts and evidence versus the other party's malicious hysterics. I am very grateful he didn't advise us to take the easy way out (a compromise was tempting as we just desperately wanted the other party out of our lives, but the truth needed to prevail). I highly recommend having Andrew in your corner.

Very responsive on the phone and e-mail, very professional and, most importantly, successful in my case. I had problems with my university retirement office, that would not allow me to change my retirement plan. Tyiase did a very good job in writing a letter to them, and they allowed me to change my plan right away. Highly recommended.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
