I relocated for work outside of the United States. As a result I became engaged with my unreasonable landlord in a rental dispute. I hired James to represent me in this matter. In addition, James also handled the closing on the house we purchased. I would recommend James to anyone looking to hire a lawyer for their real estate transactions in the Chicago or Chicagoland area. Regarding my rental dispute case: Most importantly, it was James' wealth of experience and grasp of current law that enabled me to achieve a positive outcome. Not one of the original unjust charges my landlord brought against me saw the light of day. I am fully aware James has a full case load and I am a small client of his; regardless, James consistently treated me as if I was his most important client. On a final note, James kept me abreast of all case information in a timely manner. Also, despite the 9 hour time difference between us, he always made himself available to discuss my case at a convenient time.

Glenn and his staff did a fantastic job representing me. I previously had a attorney had my personal injury traffic accident case and that attorney withdrew from the case because the passenger in my vehicle had a felony conviction. I spoke with 20-30 other attorneys and all were afraid to take the case because of passengers felony conviction and because the other party involved was a highly decorated Chicago Police Officer. Every single other attorney told me I could not become victorious because the jury would not believe us. Glenn knew my story was the truth and the cop was lying. For some strange reason Glenn wanted to help me out and see the "bad cop" go down. At first the other parties insurance company were not willing to pay us a penny. They even tried to sue me for damages. The attorney representing the bad cop stated "Are you kidding me? Do you think we want to pay your client a penny when it will be a convicted felon against a highly decorated cop?" He was ecstatic about putting this bad lying cop on the stand. After several depositions, motions, and trial dates the insurance company realized there guy was not telling the truth and started negotiating. Glenn was able to get me a favorable negotiation and we avoided going to trial. Thanks again to Glenn and his staff for helping a convicted felon get the monetary damages he deserved. All other attorneys should take this example and not be afraid of representing a convicted felon against a police officer. If you know your client is telling the truth just remember the truth will always prevail.

I highly recommend Ms. Nadelhoffer to all seeking a special attorney. She is focused, professional, honorable, one who responds expeditiously and most importantly, has a stellar work ethic. Ms. Nadelhoffer possesses an innate quality of calmness and reassurance inspiring confidence in her clients. She prudently seeks every avenue to meet a client’s needs. In anticipating the needs of a client her performance is extraordinary. I can in all honestly say, I have had simply exceptional interactions with Ms. Nadelhoffer.

Tom took great care of me and my case, getting the charges dropped and fines vacated quickly and painlessly. He was helpful and enjoyable to speak with, and I could tell he was clearly knowledgable and experienced at what he does. He simplified the process for me and made me feel at ease the whole time. I'd highly recommend him and I'd use him again if I needed to.

Mary Anne "Molly" Phelan is the best property tax attorney I have worked with. We own several commercial properties throughout Cook County and she has done a tremendous job in reducing and keeping our overall tax burden low. I worked with a different attorney, then called Molly for a second opinion. She was able to get a reduction where the previous attorney didn't think he could. She is organized and extremely knowledgeable regarding property tax law. I highly recommend her to anyone who owns property.

Professional, knowledgable, understanding, and hard-working are just a few words I would use to describe attorney Ed Manzke. After my child suffered an injury last year, I found myself in a position where I needed a personal injury lawyer.  Having had no prior experience in this area, I chose his firm based on its strong reputation and could not have been more satisfied. Ed is second to none, and it was clear from our first discussion that he had the best interest of my child in mind.  He kept me informed every step of the way and handled our case in a very timely manner.  My experience with Ed and the Collins Law Firm was exceptional, and I would HIGHLY recommend them to any person seeking legal representation.

I was introduced to Bruce Rose almost a dozen years ago. During the last decade he has handled all of my legal affairs. Bruce is a Rolodex of legal knowledge, he is always around to give you good advice, and solve problems, when you need him. He is genuinely a good person who has impeccable ethics and is reachable in a timely manner. Bruce sets the bar high, other lawyers can only try and live up his standards of law. I highly recommend him for your legal needs.

Jerry is a very professional, ethical, and knowledgeable attorney. In my situation, he suggested that I not go forward with a lawsuit, not because I had a poor case, but because it would not be in my best interest in terms of how it would impact my life (reputation, current employment, etc.). He is a credit to his profession. He also struck me as being very knowledgeable in employment law and defamation/slander. I would highly recommend him to anyone. Jerry also has served as Chairman for his local grade school board and is highly respected in the Mt. Vernon community.

Rick is extremely responsive and probably one of the most ethical lawyers that I have ever spoken with. I don't say that lightly either, I worked with nine different law firms in 2016 ranging from real estate to employment and of course personal injury. You can feel confident you are in good hands if you work with him.

Richard is an angel first and an attorney second. I was losing my house with a bad loan. He called the bank and had my loan modified which cut the payment $550 a month. What did he charge me? Nothing !!!! He said send a donation to the anti-cruelty society for him !!! This man is so kind. He said to keep in touch and let him know if I needed help in the future. I will never forget him.

The best attorneys you could ever meet and have represent you or your business. They were highly recommended by another attorney who could not represent us. I could not be happier with the attention they gave me. The level of expertise and conviction made this experience unforgettable. They will go above and beyond, advising on how to resolve the current issues and advise on prevention and how to preserve a small business such as ours. They are fair and truly care about their clients. I cannot stress enough on how you will be in the right care in the hands of Mrs. Moraitis and her associate Danielle. Thank You.

Michelle and Kathleen helped us update our living will and worked attentively, and patiently, with us to ensure that all of our questions and concerns were addressed within our legal document. We had a lot of back and forth conversation in which they were incredibly helpful in allowing us to fully understand the legal ramifications of each choice we were making with the structuring of our will. At the same time, they are incredibly professional and I would highly recommend them to anyone.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
