I was charged with Aggravated Robbery of a service station on Archer Ave. in the city which I did not commit. I approached 2 other attorneys and both of them said I should plead guilty and probably I would get probation, but with a felony conviction for the rest of my life. I heard about Martin and hired him. He reviewed the station video of what happened and believed me and believed in me. He told me we should try the case in front of a jury. We did. He worked me to death in preparation. I spent about 20 hours preparing me in his office, including 4 Sundays. The State's Attorney had 6 witnesses, including 2 detectives, and we had me. And the jury found me not guilty and handed me back my life. I will never forget what this man did for me.

I'll be blunt. If you're in a bitter battle with your residency or medical school, it's not a great place to be. Some cases can be long and drawn out, some can be straight and simple, and some "obvious" cases can be lost because the law isn't on your side. That being said, if you decide you want to fight, you need to find people in your corner. And you need to find people competent in this very niche aspect of law. Dr. Weisman, Mr. Marek, and their associates are those people. They have personal and professional experience in both medicine and law that make them uniquely qualified to help. They also genuinely WANT to help, which is a simple but meaningful measure. Now, they aren't a charity; they are a business. But in my experience, they charge pennies on the dollar for the type and amount of work they will do for you. Feel free to read all of the reviews and make your own judgements and decisions, but remember this practice has helped improve the situation of hundreds of people to date, including myself. I can't imagine choosing another practice.

Ms. Sotiras has represented me in an extremely difficult proceeding for several years. I was referred to Ms. Sotiras by a well regarded Chicago attorney and am deeply appreciative of the work she has done on my behalf. Among other things, Ms. Sotiras caught the other side withholding evidence that was supportive of my position in the proceedings and she was able to demonstrate to the court that evidence submitted by the other side was not believable. Ms. Sotiras also helped me to maintain my sanity during what was a very stressful time. Thanks goodness for Sylvia!!!

When I was referred to Wiley Law in Chicago, I was guided safely through a difficult and confusing process that I thought I would never have to go through. Attorney, Luke Wiley was very professional, assertive, attentive and thorough with every detail, and made the process of keeping my home a reality. He spared me from impending foreclosure with dignity. All of my questions were answered clearly, and my options were explained with honor and respect. Follow through and communication were excellent the entire time. I found from beginning to end that I was never left in the dark or being taken advantage of. Everyone had their unique situation for a variety of reasons, and Attorney Luke Wiley clearly has the experience to understand how to handle a wide variety of cases. I give him my highest recommendation!!!

When I made a request for information from WDFLG at the beginning of this journey, I didn't know I was embarking on a 2+ year fight for my future, but Partner Josh Haid (and later Associate Stephanie Powers) immediately eased my fears. Josh was both honest and realistic about what I might encounter after my long marriage to a pensioned city employee, yet confident that I'd ultimately get a fair and equitable settlement. Stephanie soon took over the day to day details of my divorce and together they handled a very unprofessional opposing attorney with the utmost grace. Although we nearly had to go to a trial due to a lack of cooperation from the other side, ultimately we settled and I was awarded what I had fairly requested. Though my divorce took longer than I expected, Stephanie and Josh worked to ensure my compensation for the other side's delays, and I always received prompt, honest, realistic and compassionate responses to my questions and concerns. I'm finally happily divorced and consider both of these amazing professionals true allies, and now, friends. I absolutely recommend them and their kind, professional staff to anyone who needs representation in a family law matter.

I can’t speak highly enough of my experience with Laude & David. As a father seeking a divorce, full custody of my son, and permission to relocate, I was in for an uphill battle—so much so that another local attorney actually laughed at me during our consultation meeting. But from the jump I felt respected and taken seriously by the Merel team. They didn’t baulk or disbelieve me as I told my story, and right away they provided structure and direction to my case. My divorce went on for over a year, but Laude and David made it as painless as it could possibly be—their communication was consistent and coherent, making it easy for me to understand next steps, timelines, and the whys behind their strategies. They were never once too busy to explain something to me, provide context, or weigh the pros and cons. From day one, I felt like I was in the best possible hands—because I was. Also, they’re both really friendly. Great bedside manner goes a long way! To me, this team achieved the impossible. I was granted full custody of my child, allowed to relocate, and I am finally happily divorced. I truly could not have done any of this without David & Laude and their team at Merel Family Law. 12/10 would RECOMMEND!

In my divorce case, I unfortunately had to discover that there is a circle of legal professionals who throw up rhetorical sewage adding needless billable time as well as untruthful and unnecessary complexity. Nonetheless, a response must be filed to these useless claims or you're going to look like you don't know what you're doing. Leo is a research savant! In my divorce case, he dug in deep to disable a careless short-list of false dissipation claims that sent the opposing council out of the barnyard with their tail between their legs. Leo is a lawyer on the Doman Law legal team. He’s a person of integrity and truthful disposition who presents information tactfully and truthfully. A valuable asset on the Doman Law team. Leo is the perfect complement to the Doman Law philosophy of “cut to the chase and minimize the B.S.” It’s the nonsense and rhetoric that turns a fairly simple divorce event into a $100,000 ordeal.

Britnee is a rock star!! Her skill, tenacity, organization and compassion are beyond stellar. She was exactly what we needed and a gift from God for our family. She accomplished what I truly didn't think was possible. She made a point to know our case inside & out and came to court prepared with massively organized information to present to the judge. While doing all this she was beyond compassionate with my disabled mother and a comfort in a very stressful environment. I cannot imagine having an attorney who would have fought harder or cared more for us. Her seamless ability to achieve and demand results was inspiring to watch. I will forever be thankful that Britnee represented my mom. The results she achieved were priceless.

I had an attorney for almost two years, and he could not get anything done. Zip zero Nothing... He would never respond to my emails in details, he said he would quit when I asked to bring a family member to our meeting since he was getting nothing done. I wanted someone to see this Bozo at work. He had third grade math skills and looked the other way to keep the billing going.. I hired Ashey Wood, David and Lisa and the divorce was done in terms of three weeks. Ashely did not look the other way as the last bozo attorney did, He works in the southern Burbs be aware, he is horrible. Stay in the City with the pro's like Ashely wood, David and Lisa. They care about your cash... No Bozo games and no Boys Club paper dumping. I been in Banking for 22 years and I never have seen such bad work by someone who supposes to have a degree. like my first attorney. Katz and Stefani cleaned it up in record time. use only the best K&S

For one case, I had two attorneys withdraw due to disagreements with me. I believe if I am not asking an attorney to do something unethical or illegal, they should honor my request. Although, I have studied my case using multiple resources and am familiar with the details of my case, the attorneys went against my request. Not Michael Tristano. I made it clear to him about my research and attention to details. He replied, "I am glad you know how to read because you are absolutely right". I provide the details and he prepares the legal documents. The case is now moving along much quicker.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
