Its nice to have a lawyer who is a good listener and provides excellent advice tailored to our situation. I highly recommend David Canmann. His rates are reasonable, he is both an attorney and a CPA, and he has a very loyal client base of individuals, family businesses and medium sized corporations. David structured our family business, formed our charitable foundation, created our estate plans, and he prepares our tax returns.

Steve is a terrific litigator and trial lawyer. He looks for the creative solution to every problem, and when settlement isn't possible, he beats up on his opposing counsel in court. He's smart, funny, and very easy to get along with -- but fiercely protective of his clients. He's like a mother bear protecting her cubs. His hourly rates are extremely low for a lawyer of his skill level; he's not only a great lawyer, he's a great value for commercial, employment law, and other sophisticated cases. We use him for a wide range of disputes.

I was referee to Cliff Silverman to prepare documents for a land sale. An appointment was easy and quick. His assistant Sue was very helpful, knowledgeable, and pleasant. My documents were prepared in a timely fashion and correctly. Mr. Silverman's fees were reasonable. I defiantly will use his services again in the future!

Michelle and Kathleen helped us update our living will and worked attentively, and patiently, with us to ensure that all of our questions and concerns were addressed within our legal document. We had a lot of back and forth conversation in which they were incredibly helpful in allowing us to fully understand the legal ramifications of each choice we were making with the structuring of our will. At the same time, they are incredibly professional and I would highly recommend them to anyone.

Willard has been handling my case from the start and has helped me more then words can express. He has also handled some of my friends and family's cases. I have recommended him time and time again and not once has he ever let anyone I advised down. The entire staff that he works with is knowledgeable and kind. Wonderful man to work with.

Phil is an experienced attorney I highly recommend to anyone. He is very knowledgeable and seasoned in the field of real estate and tax laws. Despite being very busy, he builds a personal connection with a client and always is very thorough in his communication and work. Phil negotiated very skillfully with another party and was very successful in shaping the contract the way we needed it to be. His valuable recommendations and insight gave me an edge over the other party and allowed me close my purchase without any issues. Phil was also a great resource during our business relationships to give me some great referrals for other expert professionals (mortgage, home inspection and various contractors). I would definitely use Phil again in my next real estate purchase.

I would highly recommend both Bryan J. O'Connor Sr. as well as Bryan O'Connor III. My case involved negligence that an elderly parent encountered at a suburban nursing home. When others seemed to give up on the case ( as many often do when dealing with the elderly ), Bryan Sr. respectfully took the time to listen patiently with empathy and care. He was very diligent and thorough when researching the case. He persevered and fought on our behalf. He was accessible and easy to reach out to speak with directly. He kept in contact with me and kept me informed every step of the way. He was honest with me at all times and was committed to get to the bottom of the truth to win the case. Anyone that has watched a beloved parent suffer or even die, due to the neglect of a nursing home staff member, doctor, nurse or aid, understands how unfair it is for facilities to get away with this sort of abuse. Bryan O'Connor WILL fight for you. Most importantly, I felt that he sincerely CARED. I am very pleased with him and his entire law firm at how they handled the entire case from start to finish as well as the outcome. If you are search of a lawyer for your case, I would take the time to give them a call. I'm certain you will be highly satisfied with the outstanding service and respect you will receive. If I could give him 6 Stars, I would.

Mr Shay handled my workers compensation case. I was a fool to try to work with the workers comp insurance company at first. After being without Temporary Total Disability benefits for almost 3 months, I needed help. I was glad I found Timothy Shay. He advertises that he is aggressive and will work for the best results for his clients. That is no lie as I had my TTD back pay within a week! Mr Shay is very knowledgeable and competent in the work comp laws and has a attitude of no nonsense when it comes to dealing with the opposing lawyers. Yet he is extremely personable and helpful to his clients. He was always patient to answer all of my questions and would spell out my options and advise appropriately. Communication with his clients goes far and above his duty as I would get emails from him personally after hours and on the weekends. This led me to understand how hard Tim Shay works for his clients! His hard work paid off as I received a settlement far larger than I ever expected. If you need a good attorney, I highly recommend Tim Shay!

I have to say Bruce R Cook was not my first choice. I was injured on the job and workcomp didn't want to pay me or my medical. I went to an attorney who promised me my pay and a big settlement. Months went by and nothing. I started searching for another attorney when I came across Robert Rs review on Google about Mr Bruce R Cook. All I can say is thank You Robert R. Mr. Cook is truly an amazing attorney. He and his staff were very professional and returned all my calls. Mr. Cook does not feed you a line of bull he shows you by actions. He got my pay started right away, got me the medical that I needed to feel good again and get back to work. After I hired Mr. Cook I was able to sleep at night again. He truly took care of me and my family, and answered any questions I asked. When it came time to settle I was very impressed. Anyone out there who don't know where to turn and needs someone to trust Bruce R. Cook is your answer. Thank you so much Bruce for all that you done.

Tiffany acted as Legislative Counsel for a municipal board for which I was a member. She was not only extremely knowledgeable on every legal ball we threw in her court, she also took the extra mile to make sure that we were informed and empowered to make good decisions. But what was most impressive about working with Tiffany, was her willingness and desire to create an authentic connection with the residents in our town. She not only listened to us but also to them. She wanted the best for our community as a whole and that was above and beyond the call of duty. A+ legal counsel!

Paul, is a patient and a no nonsense type of attorney. He will give you honest feedback whether good or bad. Paul took over an employment case I had filed against my former employer after a firm based out in Florida made a mess of things. Paul was able to get the suit back on track quickly and best of all, I didn’t have to stand over his shoulder to make sure things were getting done. I would definitely recommend Paul for any type off legal work.

I highly recommend Terrence Quinn (Terry), Partner at the Phillips Law Offices in Chicago for all personal injury and malpractice matters. I was the unfortunate victim of a car accident where I was rear-ended by a commercial tow truck carrier in 2008. I suffered significant shoulder injuries and required multiple surgeries and rehab. Like most folks, there was not enough medical coverage in my auto insurance policy to cover all the x-rays, scans, surgery, rehab and treatment necessary for me to get healthy again while caring for 2 young children. I needed solid legal representation to gain financial relief and peace-of-mind from the insurance company of the responsible commercial truck driver. Phillips Law Offices were highly recommended by friends in the legal community as very experienced and highly capable of helping me. Terry and the Phillips Law team were outstanding, diligent and unbelievably professional by completely handling all legal matters and negotiations so that I could completely focus on healing through 2 shoulder surgeries and taking care of my young children. Terry prepared me well for the legal process including how to take a deposition and be ready for trial — a daunting and overwhelming for anyone. Terry persistently advocated for me and successfully negotiated a proper settlement on behalf of my family on the eve of trial. He also negotiated down all the debts for outstanding medical bills. Terry is detailed, thorough, respectful, honest, supportive and an amazing advocate for me. I highly recommend Terry and Phillips Law Offices who will fight for you and your family and who truly stand out as very high-integrity, honest, trustworthy, respectful and results-driven in a legal field bereft with less reputable players. You will never regret this choice whatsoever.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.

Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
