Jeff is the most professional and decent attorney I have ever known. Although a shark in the courtroom, he defies the sterotypical Personal Injury attorney's reputation as being in it "only for a quick buck." Jeff is honest, and answered all my questions, no matter how trivial. He treats you like a real person, not just another client. Jeff always puts his clients' needs first, and worked hard to get results that satisfied me. I would HIGHLY recommend Jeff Saltzman to anyone looking for a great PI attorney in the NW suburbs - and beyond!

Attorney Thomas L. Demas is a very trustworthy and intelligent. He possesses a great amount of concern and compassion for his clients. He will visit elderly clients when they are unable to come to his office. His law career spans many decades. He will always go the extra mile. He is fair, at times, to a fault. Anyone would be lucky to have Mr. Demas on their side in any legal situation.

I was involved in a minor vehicle accident for which my healthcare provider and vehicle insurance should have coordinated coverage with the hospital I was taken to. Because that did not happen, I was receiving bills from the hospital that were far above what my insurance should have covered. After many unsuccessful attempts to straighten this out with my provider, I hired Mr. Stepnowski largely because of his experience with healthcare issues. Mr. Stepnowski took time to help me understand the way the law was being interpreted as it related to my claim, as my provider is located out of state. He then drafted an appeal to my insurance provider that was well researched, which won an approval and my provider adjusted the claim. I am grateful for the level of professionalism and knowledge Mr. Stepnowski imparted throughout the process.

Attorney Dan Meyer did an OUTSTANDING JOB in my defense. He recently handled two matters for me. First Matter -- He got the a Will Contest Suit Suit dismissed on Summary Judgment. Second Matter -- His understanding of the Bankruptcy Rules and their interplay with Rules of Professional Conduct was always on point. He saw things that were two and three steps away from happening and responded proactively on multiple occasions. Dan was competent, prompt and very diligent. He maintained communication with me at all times during the proceedings. I have referred Dan to one business owner friend of mine and have gotten heartfelt appreciation for my referral to such an excellent attorney. One last statement about Dan Meyer -- in addition to being a very smart, savvy and skilled attorney, Dan had a human side, offering compassion every step of the journey. I highly recommend Attorney Dan Meyer.

I used Michelle Chase for a real estate closing. During the process of the loan approval, I had several problems with the lenders due to the stringent requirements due to the current market. Ms. Chase handled all of my 'hiccups' promptly and professionally. I always felt in good hands. Her communication was excellent. I won't hesitate to use her for other services or recommend her to a friend.

Derke is a extremely knowledgable lawyer with significant experience in contracts, easements and agreements. He is extremely easy to approach, great sense of humor and is accessible and has worked hard at fostering a relationship. He is very responsive and I know he has my back whenever I may be in a pickle. He is easy to relate to and makes sure that everything being worked on or talked about is in our best interest. We have gained a great working relationship and he knows my tendencies and thought process on issues and respects that. At the same time he is not afraid to let me know when my thoughts or concerns are headed in the wrong direction. He provides terrfifc information, explains the elements of the issue in terms I can comprehend, he makes sure I am fully aware and disclosed of the matter at hand and I am confident when legal matters come across my desk.

We contacted Mr Barr about a possible upcoming legal issue. He had the time to listen to our issue, discussed the variables and then go on to give his advice and knowledge on the circumstance. He also shared the cost and possible ramifications of proceeding with legal action. It's nice to know that there are lawyers who care, show compassion, and concern, at a time when you're unsure of future litigation and are seeking information as to how to proceed forward. We felt very comfortable knowing that if indeed we needed to seek legal council, we would hire Mr Barr to handle our case. Thanks Mr Barr!

Maheen has helped me copyright and trademark my IP over the course of the past year. She has been able to answer any and all questions that have come up, including the limitations of copyright and trademark protections, the correct notations to display next to registered IP's, and the value of getting additional marks in specific classes. Her responses are timely, her prices are fair, and she's willing to make things easier for you if there are any technical hindrances during your collaboration. Would recommend her to anybody in IL who's looking to work with somebody competent and concise.

Dave carefully guided us through what could have been a divisive process (e.g., which side of the family gets the kids if we both die, how do we protect the kids if the surviving spouse remarries, what if one of the kids develops special needs, etc.). We both enjoyed it very much and now have a plan that really reflects our intentions. Equally important, we've developed a relationship with Dave that will ensure our estate plan continues to reflect our wishes as the years go by. We highly recommend Dave! Great staff, too!

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
