Mr. Rosenberg showed up to court late and in sweat pants. He threatened me forcing me to take a plea. If I would have been stronger, I would have requested a jury. I had photo evidence of a domestic assault being self defense. His lack of effort shows that he only cares for non state appointed clients.

He is the absolute WORST attorney I have ever had the displeasure of working with. I used him for a divorce when he worked in Fort Dodge. He rarely called back, he did not communicate well, causing me to spend hundreds on unnecessary plane fare, and he did not advocate for me in court. I just sat there and watched the other side get everything offered to them and he made zero objections. He failed to file my "children in the middle" course with the courts. I live out of state and he refused to put together a parenting plan that was functional for me as far as visitation and travel. He said he had never heard of such a thing. I paid my ex-wife for her part of the home that I owned on my own BEFORE marrying her because Jon Beaty said I had to and then he did not give me the receipt, even when I went to his office and requested it. I made a bar complaint and had to hire another attorney to fix what he didn't do. He was uninformed and allowed my former wife to sell joint property even when I told him it would happen. I would NEVER EVER use this attorney for anything!

I have not hire Ms. Goosmann but hired her firm to represent me and had the worst experience ever. Please note that with my 40 years of experience in Higher Education I have worked with many law firms and am capable of assessing one. The firm is totally ineffective and has a revolving door. During one year plus time I have had at least four different attorneys working on my case , one left another took over and the process keeps getting repeated four time, two were competent attorneys, the other two were awful. One of those two ineffective attorneys who has waisted my money and time was Mr. Jeffrey T. Myers. In addition, every time a new attorney was assigned to my case I had to pay for their time to read and catch up. As a result I lost a substantial sum of money. I absolutely would not recommend this firm and certainly not Jeffrey Myers.

Paid this attorney several thousands of dollars. Several years later learning more each day about the law he put absolutely no time into it. Most of them do not. I have witnessed it. The county attorney, public defenders as well as paid attorney have already decided prior to any pre conference trials. They all sit In the same room as they run you through the mill chatting amongst each other. If the prosecuting attorney is wrong the attorney are afraid to go against them.even if your rights were 100% violated.

Four years ago I hired ms. Vesey for my divorce case which involved an order of protection against my ex. I was encouraged by ms. Vesey to drop the order and put it in the divorce decree instead which I found out later was very bad legal advice because instead of a criminal offense by my ex it became a civil offense and now I have to find a competent attorney to try to get full custody of my disabled son who is still being abused by my ex.

Hired Jeff for two separate issues. He cashed the checks for retainer fees and did ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!! To speak with him regarding the jobs he was hired to do I had to 'pop' into the office unannounced because he failed to return calls, failed to file originating paperwork, failed to respond to most emails and absolutely failed to represent on either issue. The responses I did receive via email were false promises of job performance that he repeatedly didn't do. DO NOT RECOMMEND! It is my belief that Jeff Smith is a THIEF/CROOK/SCAM and should not be allowed to call himself a professional nor an attorney.

Whatever you do, don't use Trever Hook for any civil or criminal law issues. I don't think he puts in the work needed to win. I will no longer use this firm because of his ongoing failures. I will never refer anyone to this firm again.

I waited 2 years for my jury hearing in May 2017. The judge was friends of my attorney. ..so I guess he felt comfortable telling the judge I was just going to settle. The judge never ask to speak to me....to see if it was true. Matthew tells me a complete different story....made me pay the person that was suppose to fix the inside of my house after roofers messed the inside of my home. So I have a incomplete home and no funds! I find out all this after all done I was played. The judge stepped down....and he turned him into the grievance board. That doesn't help me.....but might help the next person. I have the transcripts stating what was in fact done! I wish why he did what he did!!! Why.....and being his client in 2016 I should have been advised he was in hot water himself when he was a part time judge in Dubuque Iowa. Maybe I would have gone elsewhere and actually would have had my day in court!!!

Jim Weston represented me ineffectively for a car accident in which I was an injured passenger, *and a drunk driver was at fault*. What should have been a cut-and-dry win was not, because attorneys for the drunk driver at Progressive Car Insurance were prepared to go to trial and Jim Weston was not. He said “ummm” no less than ten times in his opening statement (check the court transcript!), and right out of the gate I was deeply concerned at trial. My gut instincts were right. We lost!! To a drunk driver who had already tacitly admitted fault and was willing to settle out-of-Court. I ended up having to pay my medical bills OUT OF POCKET, and I had to pay for expert witness testimonies as well. I ended up going through a period of feeling suicidal over this injustice. In the days leading up to trial Jim advised me to reject a $26,000 settlement offer. I ended up “in the hole” over $10,000 in fees when everything was said and done, instead of with a 26K settlement. We live in a world where we have to depend on jurors, and Jim Weston is a fat lazy bastard and jurors also pick up on that immediately, whether fair or unfair “ummmmmm....”. I was impressed by the opposing council for Progressive Car Insurace. They said “ummmm” and were bewildered ZERO TIMES in their presentation. I feel like I took a knife to a gun fight, it was instantly obvious that Jim Weston was not in the same league as the attorneys we were up against. I had no idea of my appeal rights at the time - if I had I would have applied for ineffective council and for a retrial or to take the original settlement offer. Total bummer.

He charge about 200 dollars per email that he respond saying nothing relevant to the case. Just to cancel you get charge because you still are in contact with him. He said he will be with you on the court day. He was not. He is always busy or never in his office. Additionally, he does not care about your case and make you do more mistakes. He talk to much but when is time to work he does not do what he said he would do when I hired him.

1 Star is to high for this lawyer. I hired him for my divorce. He never responded to and email, never returned a call when I left a message for him. After 8 months dealing with this he finally got to work on my case only to agree with my ex wife attorney and give her everything that she wanted never once he reviewed any documents nor he fought back when they were providing him false documents or information. in the end I was screwed up and ended up with the short end of the stick (including paying for my ex wife attorneys fees) . Unfortunately I ran out of time or I would hired a different lawyer. I would not recommend Metcalf to anyone not even my worst enemy.

Mrs. Roberta Megel was my appointed public defender in CINA case. She disregarded the false accusations/statements and all the evidence I presented her. She entered exhibits that hurt my case instead of help my case. This case should have been dismissed months ago, but not one piece of actually evidence has been shown/filed with the courts. Mr. Megel has destroyed my family along with the corrupt family system. She is there for the money because it doesn't matter if she wins or loses your case. She'll still get paid. She only received a star because it was required for posting, otherwise she wouldn't have received it at all.

So I had this gentleman as my court appointed attorney in Marion County Iowa which is Knoxville for an OWI that I had gotten in Pleasantville Iowa so many things about the stop didn't seem right but Mr EinWalter wasn't really interested in doing his job looking at the facts the real fact of the matter is that the gentleman that pulled me over I requested a blood test and I was granted the blood test and everything but it took him over 3 hours to get the blood test which my lawyer didn't know Mr EinWalter he didn't know that after a certain amount of time they can't take a blood test anymore which is why they actually dropped the charges to my case and not why he thinks they did I had to literally force him to go talk to the district attorney to get the case dropped because of other extenuating factors about this officer so if you see this man come up and for public defender to represent you request for another attorney cuz this man is by far hands down the worst attorney I've ever seen in my life frankly I'm not sure how he has a license to practice law.

He was worst that terrible. He acted like he was working with the county attorney instead of his client. He offered no defense for me. I plead guilty after he assured me I would be found guilty and go to jail for 4 to 5 years. I was innocent of this which he could have found out if he had talked to witnesses. Afterwards when I called to complain he told me to f*** off.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
