Matt Craft handled my mother's estate with an abundance of wisdom, understanding, knowledge, integrity, professionalism, compassion, and a spirit of excellence. Matt being the leader that he is, also offered genuine heartfelt encouragement when things sometimes seemed overwhelming while trying to close the estate at a time of grief. I am still in awe of this young man and his abilities, he is exceptional in his field. I would consult with Matt for any area of law and highly recommend him to you.

We had a significant, and potentially life altering, issue with our disability insurance. Chad Swanson took us very seriously, and while being hopeful for our case, he was realistic in his presentation. Chad was amazingly thorough, wading through the minutiae and discovering hidden salient points. His professionalism and calm demeanor were just what we needed. In fact, the case was handled so well, we did not even have to go to court. The case was settled 100% in our favor.

Tim was very concise and detailed witht he information he provided us with regards to our child custody case. We have found most attorneys either are available all the time and don't know what they are talking about, or they are not available all the time, but know what they are talking about. Tim was the latter. Although busy, he was able to get back to us on important matters when they needed addressed. He was there well before meetings and was prepared to discuss the information and any questions we had in detail. As far as we could tell, he practiced general law and said he could help us write a new will as we discussed we were planning on updating it. We will most definitely be using him for this.

In a country with a severely flawed legal system, Heather Simplot is a refreshing change to the typical arrogant, conceited, self-privileged, self-centered, self-serving lawyers that we so often find in society. I found Heather to be endlessly patient with me on a very difficult child custody case involving multiple states and challenging aspects. Her sophisticated knowledge of Iowa law and clever aggressiveness will be quite evident. I can't put into words how pleased I was with her performance.

Let me first start off by saying I have worked with other attorneys in the past for various reasons, but Darin has by far been the absolute best as far as professionalism goes. He was always one hundred percent honest with me, he responded promptly with every email, phone call, or question I had. And he truly worked incredibly hard to deliver the desired outcome of the case he was working on for me. Well he delivered and was able to obtain exactly what we had hoped for and wanted on my case. I would advise anyone looking for legal counsel to seek Darin as an attorney. Whether it be criminal or civil, Darin is the man to go to. I was referred to him by a highly respected person who said that there was no one else they would ever use but him, and now I am on the same page. I don't anticipate ever needing a lawyer again, but if I ever do, I will not call anyone else but Darin. I can now rest peacefully knowing that I had an attorney who worked diligently for me and it was well worth the money I had to spend to receive this type of service. We all know lawyers aren't cheap, but if you want your money's worth, Darin's 27 years of experience is where you'll find it. Thanks again, Darin. Austin

I was a defendant in a small court money claim in Jan 2018. I googled and saw Christ's website. I read through his website and felt that he has extensive experience in small court claims. I wrote an email to him and he replied promptly. He gave me a lot of useful information, insights and tips. He had a calm and patient demeanor, and a sharp mind. He directed me to focus on the main issues without emotional distraction. He earned my trust when he really put himself into my shoe to suggest the best strategy for me. Moreover, he's really good at picking up phone calls. I haven't been sent to voice mail.

About 8 years ago he represented my ex at my 2nd domestic violence hearing (me being victim, and pregnant both times) and intimidated me into dropping the restraining order with the promise of seeing my daughter. That was a LIE! they went to the judge and asked for 5050 legal and my ex with primary physical and any interaction with my daughter was to my ex discretion. Fast forward to today and 9 dhs reports with 6 founded cases of abuse or neglect and 1 criminal charge against the step mom for smacking my 10 yro daughter (who has cp) across the face for a fruit snack. THANK YOU JOHN FOR HELPING MY ABUSER WHO NOW ABUSES OUR DAUGHTER.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
