I ended up spending almost 2 months in jail waiting for him to show up. The judge finally told me that i had a new lawyer assigned from marks office, her name was Mary Ann Drape, and her opening statement to the judge was "Your Honor Mrs. XXXXXX is old. Not as old as i am...but i hope the court will take that into consideration..." This is the best law firm to hire if you want to piss away a good amount of money and go to jail.

In 2010 I hired attorney Sanders to represent me in a foreclosure case. He seemed competent initially, however 6 or 7 months later I received a notice that my home was to be sold at sherriff's auction in 48 hours. I immediately called his office, but the phone was disconnected, I drove to his office, at first they said he was no longer ther (he operated from a shared office), after pressing an administrative person who had known him told me he had taken an emergency medical leave, but had not left a forwarding number or address. Sanders had allowed a default judgement to be entered in my case, never notified me, and disappreared altogether. Fortunalty, I was able to quickly hire a new attorney and prevent the sale from going forward. However, his negligence has compromised my case in a manner that I may not recover from and may ultimately may lead to the loss of my home.

Tom did a job for my company several months ago. I found discrepancies in his bill and did not get very far when I brought them up to him. By his own admission he is a slow reader. What took my 40 year old sister who has a law degree to read in 45 minutes took him hours. Hours you are being billed for. His rates are reasonable but not when you factor in the amount of time it takes him to read and write.

This attorney was deplorably rude to Sam Renick, brother of the late Ben Renick, who was murdered by his wife Lynlee (she only received a 2nd degree murder sentence. 16 years in prison(!!!)). During the victim statement by Sam Renick, Hesseman proceeds to badger Sam despite the fact that he is not (and did not during the trial) testifying!! It was so disgusting to see this in the court footage. I do NOT care if I am only supposed to be leaving reviews for "my attorney", this man is a small man, who bullies those who he is cross examining and, again, *A PERSON WHO IS GIVING A VICTIM STATEMENT TO THE COURT WHO IS NOT SUBJECT TO BEING QUESTIONED*. I shouldn't even have to mention how WRONG this is, and I hope the ethics boards in his area of Missouri investigates this and sees the court footage, because other than being not right in the head, I can't see what Hesseman got out of badgering Sam Renick other than getting off on toying with him by making him suffer more than he and his family already has, Not surprised that the website for his practice is currently down. He should stop practicing after the way he conducted himself in this case. This specific incident with Sam was not the only occurrence that was highly unprofessional during the Lynlee Renick trial.

John Counts had two years to prepare for this trial. He left everything until the month of the trial and then did not use evidence he said he had gotten for the defense. He balked at my suggestion of meeting him at his office. Payments were made to him by meeting at gas stations and Hardees. He got witnesses names wrong during court proceedings. Complete strangers told me that he's a really good lawyer but upon hearing about all of the screw ups told me that he must be drinking again. During trial, completely unprepared. He asked the Prosecutor for a copy of the police report. Awful communication. Awful "representation". My fiance would have been better off with ANYBODY but John Counts representing him.

Ryan is a nice guy. He was very pleasant. He also failed to get me any kind of meaningful results. It was extremely difficult to get a response from him, and if he responded to an email wherein I asked him seven questions, he would likely answer three of them and ignore the rest. He seemed to have a game plan, unlike some other attorneys I might mention. The problem is that he seemed uninterested in pursuing any additional strategies which other attorneys have confirmed are worth incorporating into my case. My ex likes to invent new rights and rules, ignoring the parenting plan unless it seems useful in harassing or threatening me, and Ryan failed to prevent this at every opportunity I gave him. I feel like Ryan shut me down and shut me out, collected a paycheck, and ignored me to the best of his ability. I get the sense that he's probably a nice neighbor and he's certainly very affable, but I spent a small fortune on him for the protection of my family from my abusive ex and I got virtually no results. I don't believe he wanted my business at all, based on his lack of responsiveness, unwillingness to consider building a comprehensive case with multiple sound strategies, apparent unwillingness or inability to protect me, my wife, and my children from my ex wife, and failure to achieve any results while slowly burning through multiple retainers. If I have anything to show for the massive debt I incurred on his retainers and my ex wife's own ability to make my money disappear with phenomenal efficiency (from which he repeatedly failed to protect me), it has entirely escaped my observation. Ryan's a nice guy and I wish I could honestly post a better review, but this is what happened, unfortunately.

This attorney absolutely refuses to take a call or to return a message. My family engaged her services and when one family member was diagnosed with cancer, she STILL refused to return our calls to inquire about the status of the case. Absolutely shameful, the way she has treated us. Almost no communication whatsoever and it's been four years. If she did not want to handle the case, I can't imagine why she agreed to take it. We are going to file an ethics complaint with the state attorney general's office.

Very bias about the knowledge of someone that has no experience in the court system or the judicial process and will not give any advice to anyone that can afford an attorney and now that she is a judge, she will definitely decide in the favor of anyone that has an attorney and the other party does not. I have gone to great lengths as a poor individual with no means to do what is legal and fair and with to no prevail have gotten no where because I cannot afford to pay for legal help. Every attorney that I have talked to cannot believe the unjust and unfair practices or decisions that I have been dealt. The only reason I cannot get any of those attorneys to take my case is because they are to expensive. If every attorney that I have talked to believes that I have been treated unfairly but cannot afford to hire them, then what is someone supposed to do in my situation.

Do not hire this attorney if you want to keep your home or anything of value to you! I consulted with her on saving my home by filing a chapter 13 after spending 30 minutes on the phone with her she advised me to let go of my home and start over. I contacted another attorney and he took my case andsaved my home and I am still in it 3 years into my chapter 13. I do not believe this attorney has anyone's best interest in mind but her own.

Croft is an awesome lawyer for probate cases. My father passed away in 2012 and I'm STILL working to close his estate due to the misguidance of Mr. Croft. He is not attentive at all- I'd leave him a voice mail and three weeks later he'd call me back to inform me nothing had changed. This went on and on until I decided to find new representation. I wasn't even able to fire him via certified letter because there was no one in his office to sign for the letter for 15 days. Unable to reach him by mail, phone, or email I had to go through St Louis County court to remove him from my case permanently. I would NEVER recommended this lawyer for any type of court case you have. There are far better lawyers in St Louis area with less experience.

Hired James to defend me in Missouri on a ridiculous charge, as he stated easy open close case. The preliminary hearing he was an hour late with no notice to be of his tardiness. Took the case to trial and waited for well over an hour for him to show. I was one of the last people in the court room and he nonchalantly walks into the court room. Only plus is that the charges were dropped. Would not recommend, very unprofessional as an attorney. Not to mention the Missouri courts are a joke! !!

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
