Jack Knowlan is a former Missouri workers' compensation administrative law judge who now represents injured workers on compensation claims. I discuss certain practical aspects of difficult cases with him on a regular basis. What I most appreciate about Jack is not just his deep knowledge of workers' compensation, but his good judgment and insightful assessment of a wide variety of practical problems that arise in workers' compensation cases. He carefully prepares all his cases and keeps his clients well-informed.

Derrick Good with bulldog determination was relentless when a contractor wanted to sue us for a medical problem he said was brought on by our insistance for him to complete a his job. We never insisted on putting himself in a harmful situation. Through Mr. Good's thorough investigation and review of the case, would not relent and advised us to be patient. We went to court finally after the contractor changed several lawyers, gave our testimonies, and the account of the accident. And we won the case. Mr. Good is a lawyer that can be trusted to complete what he starts, and to be thorough through out the length of the case.

My experience with John Fritz exceeded my expectations. He handled my car accident case when I was 6 months pregnant. Not only was John professional, but he also negotiated a settlement that was higher than we anticipated without having to go to court. I would definitely recommend John to anyone ahs been in a car accident.

It was an extremely positive experience working with Megan Stiles, Marc Middleton and the rest of the team at Cornerstone Law Firm! I am so glad they were on my side! I quickly found that Megan is very experienced, ethical and professional, but also caring and kind. She really listened to my situation. Megan was very patient with me as I brought my questions and concerns to her and as I took time to gather all the information that she needed for my case. I really appreciated this. Megan is an invaluable asset to the Cornerstone team and she really made a huge difference! Megan and Marc worked effectively with the mediator and the opposing counsel to find a great settlement solution that was very reasonable! Megan was willing to explain reasons for things that would’ve otherwise been difficult to understand. She also helped me to clearly see all my actual options at any given time during the process, and she was realistic about all the possible outcomes and the overall timelines. Megan remained positive and steady about reaching a good settlement solution even when the mediation seemed to be locked up for awhile. I am extremely grateful for the experience and the hard work from Megan, Marc and the rest of their team! Thank you!

My family retained Mark Lanzotti after my husband’s health worsened and we were forced to accept that he would not be able to go back to work. It was an incredibly difficult time for our family in accepting his prognosis, the financial stress due to the loss of his paycheck and to make matters worse – the confusing the overwhelming SSI process. After receiving my husband’s SSI denial, it was clear that an attorney was in order and Mr. Lanzotti was recommended to us and retaining him was the best decision that could have been made (our only regret is not calling him sooner). We can’t begin to verbalize how much our family appreciates and respects Mr. Lanzotti and his paralegal, Kendra. Both are genuinely kind professionals who were consistently responsive to our questions and their knowledge of disability law and Social Security in general is impressive. We also appreciated Mr. Lanzotti’s communication style. He is direct, honest, sincere and set realistic expectations for our case. During our hearing, Mr. Lanzotti demonstrated his preparation for our individual case resulting in a very favorable outcome. I would recommend Mr. Lanzotti and his team without hesitation.

As a disabled widow, I have come to rely on Tom Haynes to read over and prepare many documents for me as well as for my aging parents for whom I was caring. His advice is reliable, and his reviews and advice took considerable burden off of me during difficult times. He showed caring with each of my concerns. He took great effort to make sure that he explained and that I understood each situation completely.

i met this lawyer as the prosecuting attorney for a charge of marijuana possession that i received. (First offense, no priors) My very expensive lawyer dodged my calls and postponed my case numerous times. But Mr Jones was always helpful and fair to me. I asked him questions and he always answered them. My lawyer was just fine with a 7 day jail sentence recommended by the previous prosecutor. I pushed my lawyer to ask for that to be reduced and Mr Jones reduced it to probation. So much more helpful to me than my own attorney. That shows a great deal of fairness and class. I would recommend this guy for any legal matter. Just an all around great guy and a super lawyer.

I needed an attorney in Missouri, to file a VoIP service provider registration with the Missouri Public Service Commission. So I contacted several attorneys in Missouri. It was apparent that one of them had little-to-no experience with VoIP and quoted a very very high cost for this simple registration work. Another didn't respond to my inquiry for several days. On the opposite end of the spectrum, Mr. Steinmeier responded very quickly to my inquiry, appeared to be very knowledgable of this registration requirement, and quoted a very reasonable cost for filing this registration for me. He also kept me updated with what was going on. I'm extremely happy with Mr. Steinmeier and his work.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
