Kevin is fantastic. From the moment I stepped into his office he made me feel right at home and safe. He answered all of my questions regardless of how silly they may have been and definitely eased my worry about everything. He approached my case with confidence and light humor to lighten the mood which definitely made me feel better. He always responded to my calls/emails in a very timely fashion. I would definitely hire Kevin again and would definitely recommend him to a friend.

Thank you for handling my brothers affairs so efficiently and with a gentle and caring approach. Your willingness to visit us in the hospital (twice) to advise us on the correct path in writing up our legal documents is testimony to your compassion to help others during times of crisis and legal questions. Clearly, you went out of your way to pull it all together, then explain and execute three legal documents all within 24 hours.

I had put it off for far too long. After getting married, having kids, and getting bogged down in the daily grind that is life, I woke up one day realizing that if something happened to me, my family would be left behind to pick up the pieces all on their own. I needed to have a plan. I knew nothing about wills, trusts, or estate planning in general. It’s part of the reason why I kept procrastinating. Just like you are doing now, I had begun searching online to try and learn more, and of course the results were overwhelming. There’s was a lot more to it than typing up a do-it-yourself will, I couldn’t take the chance, I needed help. When I found John Rommel, we were able to meet virtually. No need to drive to an office or take time off of work! Together, we worked out a plan based on my budget and how I wanted my family to be taken care of if the unimaginable happened. It’s not an easy discussion to have, I get choked up thinking about my kids not having their dad around. There were some tough questions and some real soul-searching, but it’s totally worth it now that I have a plan in place. One thing I really liked about working with John is that this isn’t a one-and-done experience. He genuinely cares about making sure I’m set for the future and when something changes down the road, he’ll be there to guide me and my family through. I highly recommend John. If you are looking for help with your plan, start here.

Atty Jones helped my family to pre-plan to protect our home and investments against Medicaid spend down. I really believe that he cared about our well being, even though he didn't know us. Very responsive and happy to answer any questions, even after we had signed our documents and taken them home. We would recommend him to anyone.

Joan Swartz has been our primary corporate business attorney for over a decade. We are an international business improvement consulting firm based in Arizona. We depend on Joan as our primary focal point for all of our legal activities. She has a non threatening and common sense approach to her work that we really appreciate. She has assisted in developing all of our internal legal documents as well has represented us successfully with a couple of employment law cases that have required litigation. She is fair, understand the issues and is extremely diligent when it comes to resolving issues. Recently, Joan was retained to architect an agreement to repurchase the shares of a business partner who desired to leave our organization. Because of her involvement the re-purchase went well. The results exceeded the expectations of all parties involved. We are pleased to have her on our team.

Jennifer Wieland represented our company regarding a labor and employment matter that resulted in 3/3 successful outcomes. Unfortunately, we live in a highly litigious society, and sometimes litigation is unavoidable. When that time came for us, I was glad we could rely on Jennifer's knowledge and expertise. She was very professional, organized and responsive throughout the entire process. I would highly recommend Jennifer to anyone who has a need for excellent legal representation.

Mr. Terry was a godsend, helping to navigate a very tricky situation for our corporation. We had worked with several attorneys immediately before being referred to him, and he was finally the one that was able to offer much-needed assistance, accountability, and responsiveness. I recommend him without any reservation, and only wish he had been recommended to me sooner.

Mr. Kennedy performed with the utmost professionalism in my family trust matter. He was always prepared, his office staff were extremely courteous and professional and he was always willing to take time and explain. Family trust matters can be somewhat emotional and confusing, and in this particular case, an unspecified charitable trust was quite unusual. I would highly recommend Mr. Kennedy to anyone needing an excellent litigator and/or family trust attorney.

Chad O'Neill has represented both myself and my husband. From the very beginning, they are extremely good listeners. They do not simply give orders and try to get you in and out quick. They spent a lot of time with us personally, and working on our cases. Everything they did had significant purpose; they did nothing that seemed to be a waste of our time or money. Every task was accomplished far faster than expected. Going in to court, our attorney was very professional and handled our cases very well. In the end, my husband and I were extremely happy with the outcomes. To be honest, we cannot recall anything we were unhappy with. While we hope to never need their services again in the future, if we do end up with a need, we feel confident that we will be well taken care of with The Flynn Law Firm.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
