I simply called and asked for info on how to get a divorce process started PATRICIA then got on the phone and asked me the situation so I told her she then said she would take the case well here we are like a month later I’ve reached out to her twice about the process and what she needed from me we arranged to meet on a Sunday (today) and something happened so I found a way to contact her and let her know what’s going on so anyways we ended up in an argument and this woman is anything but kind and is just fake and used her husband being in the hospital to make me feel bad so unprofessional to say the least to bring personal issues into it and then to go off on someone after you were the one who wanted to meet on a Sunday… I have never left any review for any business but this woman is beyond rude and disgusting…

I've personally only had to use 2 lawyers for my custody and Claire was the replacement to my first lawyer, and I can say without a doubt I would have preferred my first lawyer. Firstly Clair charged $6500 more for her retainer fee and fed me all sort of excuses why we would need the larger fee, to continue on with the crap shoot I provided hours of audio recording, a detailed journal of events, a handful of videos, and quite a bit of other scrapes of evidence that clearly outline my ex's failings so far as a mother (ie drug use, borderline abuse, abandonment ect) just for it all to be sweep under the rug and forgotten. The entire time my case was going on it was a struggle to even contract her, I couldn't tell you how many times I heard 'I'll call you back' but I can say I've never received a call back unless I owed them more money. All in all Clair Mehaffey charge me a total of $15000+ to get me 50/50 custody and paying child support when a had proof my ex lied about me and that she likely needs to be in jail (Again).

I hired this lawyer over a year ago to assist with my custody battle with my child. It has been the most stressful and the worse experience I've ever had with an attorney. After countless of evidence ( video, message and pictures) against the other party I have provided throughout the year along with thousands upon thousands dollars spent I ultimately feel that she never had my interests at heart. It was all about money with her and if you can pay thousands of dollars BEFORE anything gets done and IF anything get done. She did not file anything to assist with my case and my childs' welfare was in jeopardy countless times and nothing was done. She has failed to stay in contact with me and will not contact me (even after payment) about the next steps in my case or updated me when things were happening. She avoided going to court at every instance even when it was a necessary step at one point. I have continued to give her chance after chance in hopes that she will help. EACH new instance that occurs requires around a $3500 dollar retainer. So basically I am back to square one with my child in the hands of someone who is unfit, me out of thousands of dollars and an a attorney who is good for.. nothing really. I wouldn't recommend her to my worse enemy, she's HORRIBLE.

I wish I could give this person a negative rating. Instead of wanting to represent my case with TRUTH and HONESTY, Mr. Leggett, simply took my family's $1000.00 retainer, walked into the courthouse, claimed I was guilty and went straight to plea bargaining. If this is the practice he's displayed for the last 32 years, Im actually amazed he's still in business. He LITERALLY did what a public defender would have done; pandered into the UNjustice system for money. If he wasn't willing to represent me in the light of truth, why did he keep the money? Why didn't he say, I do not believe youre innocent, and pass me onto a more competent attorney? That would have been way more constructive in my life as a family man, than just sticking me on three years probation. I feel violated ,both as a patriotic TEXAN, and as a productive member of my community. I have stood before the court in the past and represented myself better than this guy. And my family wasn't out a RIDICULOUS amount of money. For shame, sir. For shame.

This lady was court appointed in my cps case and she did a very poor job non professional. She was never at any of the meetings, that's when she did inform me of a meeting. I missed very important meetings for my voice to be heated because she never kept us up to date on the case. She is the reason my rights were terminated. Her and cps case worker were more worried about argun in front of my daughter at the visits, or at court in front of cps lawyers because she did not want to inform the judge about me wanting to address the court of ongoing problems. Also she handled my appeal Wich I was never in person at none of the court for that. She just sent me a big yellow envelope in the mail notify me of terminated rights. So sad this lady needs to quit her dam job and quit ruing and taking the states money. Shame on you.

Wow. Do not even consider calling Stacey Chapman. My wife was going through a custody battle regarding her two youngest kids. She had lost them previously to her ex husbands parents in a divorce. We hired Stacey to help us get normal visitation rights so my wife could see her kids on a regular basis. We had several court dates with Stacey where the court order was only modified to give us supervised visitation. Each time we went to court Stacey seemed very unprepared for court. She didn’t even know all of the witnesses the other party had brought to court. After our previous trip to court, my wife called Stacey for weeks leaving messages with no reply from Stacey. She would not return any of our calls. Finally, just a few weeks before our final court date with the appeals judge to determine the outcome of all these efforts, Stacey set up a meeting time with my wife. Upon meeting with my wife Stacey informed her that she was dropping our case and my wife would have to find another attorney. Her reason were because there was a report the cops were called to our house. (Noise complaint from an argument, no one was arrested). Now my wife is completely screwed because we are only weeks from a final hearing and no attorney. Also I’ll mention that Stacey was paid in full. This woman should not be practicing law. She obviously has no regard for her clients, completely screwing us shortly before court. Now we have no attorney and no money to hire a new one. Thanks Stacey Chapman.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
