Elaine was great! She provided everything I needed to know for me to make the best an ultimate decision for myself. She was very knowledgeable about the process and made me feel very comfortable about the decision I made. She was responsive and when I had questions she helped me understand more about the workforce and gave me tips to help myself moving forward. She was great! I would refer her to everyone.

I don’t even know how to start or where to start. Bethany became my attorney as a result of one of the hardest decisions I was faced with…divorce. I didn’t know where to start, what to expect, or how it could ever end for myself and my daughters. The moment I met Bethany I knew she was the one. Her energy and everything about her so so calm, sharp, and professional. She handled my case, which not only had complications but had a complicated “ex” on the other side. She handled my life with nothing but respect and delicacy. Because of Bethany, three lives have changed in ways I could have never imagined. Her experience and love for what she does, changed three lives. More importantly, it changed the trajectory of my children’s lives and that is priceless to me. Most people never say “I hope to see you again!!” to their attorney, but, I honestly hope I can see her again under totally different circumstances because she is an incredible human being.

Jacob has extraordinary skills as an intellectual property attorney. His ability to understand nuanced comments and reconstruct them into meaningful approaches for his clients is an important asset. Jacob is a people person, which is very important to founders of start up and early stage companies who are seeking patent protection for their intellectual property. Jacob's skills at interpteting IP law and the process of securing a patent greatly benefit his clients. My short experience with Jacob has been nothing short of excellent and in a relatively quick time frame, he has played an integral role in securing patent protection for our IP. I would not hesitate in engaging Jacob in the future and in fact, already have done so!

Ben is not only a super attorney, he is a wonderful stand up guy who I have hired on several occasions. He really looks out for his clients and truly cares about them, not just the money. In the 10 yrs I have known him I have not had a single negative thing to say about him. He is a good person and you feel that immediately upon meeting him. Came highly recommended (by my drug dealer). That was the best deal of all! Ben stepped in after I fired my horrible attorney and tried to salvage my defense as best he could. I was facing 3 felonies, 2nd and 3rd degree, looking at possibly 20 years tdc, and he got me probation instead. Then helped me through a motion to revoke a few years ago and got that straightened out as well for me. He is worth the money, and that means alot because I am a cheapskate!

Hamilton was referred to me by my attorney. Have you ever assembled a team and knew you needed on additional player knowing that he could make all the difference? That is Hamilton. Hamilton joined my legal team relatively late but his effectiveness and contribution was immediate. Sharp, funny, and articulate Hamilton went for the jugular and worked so well with my other attorney it was as if they had been together for the entire 3 1/2 year ordeal. His knowledge of business law and skill in reading people were inspiring. With the knowledge he brought to my team I feel not only helped win the case but prepared me to be a better at business in the future.

I live out of town and had some issues. I called him and he always answers the phone, returns calls and emails on time (i mean, FAST!) and he's really just trying to work things out for YOU, not for his pocket. How many attorneys like that can you find? Very reliable, great service!

AT first I wondered about him but then he hit the ball out of the park. He knows the courts as well as the law. if you need a straight headon person to stand by your side he is the one no bull no whinning just a full frontal attack for you. I never thought I would tell a lawyer this but I would have him on my "6" any time in any fight. You would only do worst if you pass him by, He will take your side even if you are hard outside of his elements, My case was the frist case fought in the courts in Austin and I will never feel anything was missing except for a fair court, they railroaded my case shutting down all defence and miss using an law not the way it was ment to be used. If you need a great lawyer grab this one.

Paul Van Osselaer is a "go to" attorney who I endorse without hesitation. He is the rare combination of street smarts, superior analytical skills and common sense sprinkled with a liberal dose of humor. As an in-house counsel with 30 years of experience I can count on one hand the number of attorneys who are capable of handling "bet your company" litigation - and Paul is in the top tier.

My grandmother was being seriously mistreated at a nursing home outside of San Antonio and I was desperate for an answer. I was notified from a friend about an attorney who did work for his brother. Mr. McGill was very professional and understanding. He resolved my case within a year and ended a trying time in my life. Very thankful.

I hired Henry after an attempt to get a fair settlement failed. My circumstances were the collision caused a severe exacerbation of preexisting conditions, so that was the basis of both my own insurance and her insurance company's refusals, despite knowing that I was approved for both short- and long-term disability after the accident. Henry and Peggy took over and I stepped back and they did their work. I never received anything but warmth and felt as though I was a genuine person to both of them. The insurance companies resisted, but Henry and Peggy never stopped with their persistence and were able to obtain the maximum payout from both companies. I don't believe that the insurance companies believe that they were in the wrong for their denials, but they had to stop disregarding the doctors, the disability providers, and me. Many thanks, Henry and Peggy.

Mr. Mitchell mediated my case this week. I was totally unaware of what happened in a mediation, and he made me feel at ease and explained the process in detail. I am convinced that, coupled with the excellent work my attorney had done previously on the case, Mr. Mitchell's expertise and calm demeanor were also responsible for the excellent outcome of the case. I highly recommend mediation and specifically Mr. Mitchell as a mediator.

Ms. Price kept us in the loop, up-to-date and clearly showed that truth does count. The case results showed what should have been the results from day one and if not for Ms. Price I doubt I would have managed to keep my sanity. I also appreciate her integrity as she offered nothing during the trial that would cause the plaintiff to even hesitate in testimony by mentioning or bringing in details of items that had been excluded as evidence by the court. Thank you Ms. Price for affirming for me that not all lawyers sink to any depth to win a case.

I've had the pleasure and privilege of working with Matthew Staples on a regular basis for just over two years. Matthew serves as primary outside counsel to our social media technology company and has negotiated the majority of our contracts with our Global 2000 clients. Matthew is a consummate professional--he is diligent and timely in his work and we rely on his guidance without hesitation. Matthew possesses a keen and comprehensive mastery of the nuances of intellectual property law and the broader field of technology-related contract drafting and negotiation. He appreciates and adeptly negotiates the balance between serving as a zealous advocate for his clients and working to close the deal in a way that leaves all parties feeling satisfied with the outcome. I look forward to working with Matthew for years to come and recommend him without hesitation.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
