Leslie represented my wife’s, child’s father in a simple matter of a revised parenting plan as we had moved back to the state of WA. Dealing with her was not only a nightmare, but at times completely comical! Her and her staff don’t even bother to read e-mails let alone review documents I sent to her TWICE! Or, so she claims. My problem is this woman’s character. I question how attorneys sleep at night when they represent people who don’t pay child support ever and abuse women in a variety of ways? But hey, it’s all about the money right?! Clearly, this is Miss Gilbertson’s ONLY objective as neither herself, nor her incompetent paralegal ever review any documents at all. I received paperwork that first time that had the child’s name spelled incorrectly all over the entire document as well as his agent wasn’t even right! I had to correct and send back to her with revisions to come to a full, two party agreement on the parenting plan. Then, she emails me saying one of the forms the court no longer accepts because there’s a newer version. As a family lawyer, you would think both her and her staff would be knowledgeable about changes with legal docs required to be submitted? Here’s where it gets “fun”. Because this matter was simply a parenting plan revision, my wife and I did not retain an attorney. So Miss Gilbertson used that to try and pull fast ones I believe in opinion several times. When I sent the document back to her two times with the changes, it was filed with the King County court in the ORIGINAL format she had very first sent without revisions and/or agreed upon modifications. I have an e-mail chain of around 50 e-mails to support this. She essentially took the signature pages my wife signed and swapped them to her original proposal. So, without accusing her, thays either fraud OR utter incompetence by her and her staff to not only not read a document on two adorarte occasions but not review for spelling and other errors and omissions when filing a court document. I filed formal complaints with the WA State bar and AG office as well as the local BBB and will make sure everyone knows about this as she will not admit to answer my question as to wether is was indeed fraud or stupidity? I suppose neither are a good answer but nonetheless one I deserve. I believe the first is the winner as when I called her on this via e-mail, she then began to threaten to use “enforcement” aka calling the police to remove a child from my wife stating the non agreed upon document that was filed was legally binding. I told her that was fraud and I was going to e-mail the judge which I did, then she started back peddling. So, as I can see within the last few years her reviews are awful! Do yourself a favor if you’re looking for an attorney and go elsewhere Leslie isn’t worth any money what so ever! Blows my mind people who have such little attention to any detail are allowed to even practice law. Just chalk it up to one more joke that is America today! Sleep well at night Leslie... hope that money outweighs the conscious of being a female that represents men who live with their mommies in their 30s and have a history of abuse and lack of support for their own child all documented and ignored by our glorious court system!

I hired Ms. Gilbertson to do the paperwork for an uncontested divorce. After getting the process started she stopped responding to communication, leaving me in the dark as to the status. After calling and leaving messages I finally got a response and status update from a lawyer in a different firm(huh?) but no word from her. You'll notice that this lady has lots of good reviews before 2017 but since then mainly negative reviews. I give her an unequivocal "don't hire" review.

From allegedly going 19 over the limit, Yan saved my butt big time in Seattle and had my ticket handily dismissed. I hate that 520 speed trap. His emails were very thorough and instructions were clearly communicated. He's been doing this for years so when you take him on, you have to trust him that he's got your back: he's forthcoming with the details so it's not blind faith. Ultimately the results speak for themselves.

“Deb” Bianco is focused solely on practicing law for financial gain. I have witnessed first hand -Deb Bianco lie to the court and attempt to use her position as pro tem commissioner in family court to manipulate the legal process and to gain favor with other commissioners on her private practice cases. Deb Bianco has violated DV PTO orders in place by the court (against her client) by seeking contact of the friends, family members, acquaintances m, coworkers, ex husband and former relationships of the protected party. ABD Deb Bianco sought to legally represent these parties against the “protected victim”. Deb Bianco violated a DV PTO -stalking protection order by making contact and she’s obtained information about the protected party to use in court on behalf of her client the perpetrator. Further Deb Bianco manipulated a third party by offering to legally representation- AND Deb Bianco accepted payment for legal services. Yet.,., Deb Bianco denied- In deposition filed in King County representing the third party and she denied accepting payment by check. Deb Bianco should be removed as a commissioner in King County Family court. “Conflict of interest” is an understatement.

If I could give her negative stars, I would. She was issuing Domestic Violence Protection Orders in court, but yet seemed to have no knowledge of domestic violence at all. She also did not read over any of the court records for the defendant and based her decisions off of what was said during the hearing. If she did, she would have known about the consistent issues the defendant was presenting with. I did not feel supported at all and felt like she had no idea what she was doing, but is yet up there making all types of decisions about peoples lives and safety. I want to make a complaint about her

This is my first negative review. I was a client of Alice and was forced to leave her services and hire another lawyer. Alice almost never answers calls right away, and if she does, you feel that you are constantly bothering her. She never let me know when the hearings were, so I missed all of them. Despite the fact that my case was initially easy, it became difficult because of this. I had to overpay and hire a new lawyer. Do not be afraid, look for good English-speaking lawyers, and do not rush here just because they can speak Russian with you!

Yulia Khorun is a lawyer who promises a lot, but does not fulfill anything - she did not make a single promise based on the results. If I were without a lawyer, I would not have lost more than I lost with her "help". Often does not answer calls and emails. She gave me false information about the possibility of my virtual presence at the court. For 2 months of "cooperation" on the divorce proceedings, I did not report to the judge the facts and information that I gave her and asked to attach to the case. I changed my testimony in She allowed herself to speak to me, raising her voice and be rude. Deliberately delayed the process in order to earn more money, dissuading me from the terms of the peace agreement. For two and a half months of "our cooperation" she took 8600 dollars and did not work a single cent, I had to be left without a lawyer, realizing that they take a lot of money from me, but they only bring harm by their actions. Took a huge zero-score fee for me, highly discouraged!

We have had to use Cheryl a few times and the reviews are very accurate, she pushes her agenda on you. Mediation is not arbitration but she claims that if you don’t agree she will then arbitrate. Do not go in without any attorney! She will side with one person, that’s normally the one she talks to first. Not a clue how she has not been disbarred for her antics. Next step, try to file the paperwork myself to get the problems resolved and then hook up with the AGs office and the Bar Association. I won't even get into the entire list. The single worst thing Ms. Lancaster did during her representation of me was to completely ignore my written answers submitted to her, and emails and phone calls to her, regarding a deemed admissions request from the opposition in my case. Because she didn't respond, for months, the admissions were accepted by the court, AS PRESENTED! I dare not share the dollar amount this could have simply given away. Her actions destroyed my case and subsequently cost me well into 5 figures and nearly an additional year of life I'll never get back trying to rectify this after retaining new counsel. I will not be hiring her again.

Ms. Lancaster did nothing on time with the exception of demanding payment. At one point, she told me that we could finalize by the 10th. When that date came and went she finally responded to one of my emails explaining that she hadn't filed because she wasn't sure that was what I wanted. Since I got no calls or emails asking for guidance, I am fairly certain that she simply forgot. I felt that way regularly with her. I'd recommend self representation before hiring Ms. Lancaster.

Ms. Lancaster seems like a nice person, but I regret hiring her. I felt she was likely overbooked as my emails would often not come back a with a response within a reasonable time frame, and often did not come back at all. I entered this process with no knowledge of the legal procedures, and often did not receive guidance or insight as to what to expect and what was common or reasonable. She did not explain to me that it was possible to settle out of court and as a result we took something to court that did not need to go. When filling out the paperwork, I was uncertain about income that needed to be included. Following he'd advise cause the opposition to be able to frame me as being intentionally deceitful. She also advised increasing non ordered support before we went yo court, which set the stage for the opposition to argue that even more was required. I very much wish I had hired a more expensive lawyer, since I ended up having k g yo pay the opposition's bills as well as my own.

On 8/22/2012 myself and my husband hired Mr. Penfield to represent us on our appeal case. His consultation was a FREE consultation. We sat across from him in his conference room in Bellevue, WA as he entered and rentered the room as he also was handling some sort of arbitration issues with other clients over the phone. This is the reason why we were there for two hours. He went over the pertinent documents to determine if he wanted to take our case. He stated he did and then he asked us for $10K up front. I said NO. Cannot do that. He sthen said $5K + referrals and had Michelle, his secretary make up the contract. I did refer one person to him within a week. He took my money and said he thought we had a great case. The brief was due in Pierce County COAII in approx. 35-40 days from the time we met with Mr. Penfield. I spent a lot of money getting all the necessary documents to COAII so the only thing left to do was file the brief. As the deadline for the brief due date neared, I became concerned, as Mr. Penfield never filed a Notice of Appearance. He took my case and my money but never filed a notice of appearance? This means Mr. Penfield never really intended on representing me, but made me believe otherwise and waited until the 11th hour to notify me so I was faced with a serious time crunch. After I left several messages and emails Mr. Penfield finally responded and stated that he did not think we had a good case and he is not going to represent us in the appeal. He then said we should just move to mediation. This was not possible because we did not have a valid Notice of Default. Mr. Penfield who is supposedly up on foreclosure statutes certainly would know that one needs a valid NOD to go to mediation under the department of commerce in our state. This to me is a conflict. Mr. Penfield's contract was a flat fee contract to write the appeal, which he never did. He then issued me a new contract for mediation. He said all of the money was spent and really his hourly fee is $375 per hour, which was not specified anywhere on his contract and if that was his fee to begin with we would have never hired him.

I hired Bob over 3 years ago to help me with two matters. The first one involved my marriage. Bob was ever so gracious at our initial meeting. However, when it came down to doing anything he bluffed his way through until 1 week before our court date. Then he told me that a superior court judge had already ruled and we had no recourse. The second involved a fraudulent bank loan. Bob wrote the complaint over and over but never filed it. This took 2 years, as he always had excuses about problems with his family or he had been in the hospital, or his car broke down. You name it, he had the excuse. Just recently Bob was aware that I got some money and he asked me for a loan. When I denied him he said he needed to pay his staff before he could move forward, and charged me an additional $500 over and above the agreed upon amount to solve my case. That was the last I heard from him.

This attorney contacted me today through her paralegal on behalf of my condo association. This attoney’s position is that it is fine for the COA to fine me for having beautiful, well maintained flower pots outside my condo without following due process. This attorney also advocated that all the the COA’s violations are excusable and that I should actually step up to the plate and perform the maintenance for them unless I want my dues to go up with all my neighbors’ The communication between this attorney and her client were so poor that I had to provide it to them, more than once due to their confusion. I don’t think an ethical attorney should be giving their clients a free pass on abiding by contracts while supporting fining homeowners for things that would never pass a reasonable person standard in the court.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
