Mr. Schwartz has assisted several of my friends during their family law matters. I admired how expeditiously and effectively he handled their matters, especially when it came to matters pertaining to the children. When I unpredictably found myself in need of his services, he proved himself extremely capable, knowledgeable, and professional. He eased my mind during an exceptionally difficult time and helped me find the clarity I needed to make the best decisions for myself and my children.

I hired this firm to help win back residential custody of my daughter. I had hopes that Jay would turn my wrong to right as promised. After paying much money , Jay did not achieve any of the agreements made. I was constantly billed and asked for payments, I didn't have . I am now being sued from this firm . I would not recommend this lawyer.

Ms. Hollingshead is both extremely professional and deeply knowledgeable. I hired her initially to draft estate planning documents (will, living will, power of attorney, health care surrogate, etc) for myself and my husband. Then when we separated, she advised me in how to update the documents to reflect my changed situation. Since that time, I've engaged her to advise me on a number of topics, including business strategy & real property acquisition. She has invariably given me sound advice, and correctly, completely, and quickly drafted and filed any and all documentation required. I would unhesitatingly recommend Ms. Hollingshead as a first rate attorney in all these areas.

I was asking him many questions as this is an important thing in one's life. To make sure after you die, things go right. I could see he was getting annoyed by my questions. He never asked me about my assets. How much money I had in my accounts. Nothing. He wrote nothing down and could not wait for me ti leave. He even said I think you should use the law firm I used to work at. Are you kidding me. Do what you want but I would not waste my time seeing this attorney. He was useless

Asked Ron Lewis to handle Foreclosure case for me and once I got served he said he would handle it. His staff NEVER FILED THE PAPERWORK (the firm was never on the service list of the foreclosure complaint - which would show that the complaint was answered. I got default summary judgement and they still hid the fact that they never filed on my behalf. I had to hire another attorney to have it vacated. It was a TOTAL NIGHTMARE! THANK goodness the lawyer that replaced him was a "real" lawyer. I know this was years ago, but I came across an email from his staff that really irked me because they stated that I had "no meritorious defense tactics remaining" when in fact they NEVER said to me they didn't file the paperwork!!! Not only DID I have defense tactics remaining, I was able to vacate that default summary judgment (the judge saw that Ron Lewis never answered the complaint. I did save my home no thanks to Ron Lewis and Cynthia Reed... Here part of the last email written by Cynthia Reed (Ron Lewis's staff lawyer... After this email was sent, I asked why the complaint was never answered, where they never replied. Would you want them as your lawyer??? Here is the email... Al, ... "I seriously doubt you are financially able to pay for that Jupiter property - even if you make use of all the relief that Chapter 13 offers. And you are right ā€“ if you scrape up enough money to pay your Chapter 13 payments for a few months, then default and your case is dismissed ā€“ you lose that money and you will thereafter lose the property to foreclosure, since the lender will then reset its hearing and get its judgment and the property will be sold. You have no meritorious defenses, there are no ā€œstallā€ techniques available in your foreclosure case, and if you are not in Chapter 13 making your payments on time, you will eventually lose the house. You indicated to me very clearly that you and your wife have come to terms with this, accept it as a likely if not definite outcome, and are ready to move on from the Jupiter house. " Postscript: I did file a complaint with the Florida, but I became ill after the dismissal of the foreclosure (foreclosure process was very stressful). I wish I had filed it timely. I may display all the paperwork on a webpage for everyone to see (simply the public record, invoices, and emails) and not put my opinion. I nearly lost my home because of this lawyer's actions ( nonactions actually).

Strangest experience with Melissa Waldinger. Called her for a pre-nup and explained I found her through my companyā€™s legal plan. She talked to me for a few minutes about it then setup a consult later in the week. We went through all the info she needed from me and my Fianceā€¦ then the following Friday that week she says I should check with the legal plan to make sure they cover not just drafting the agreement but also any negotiation/change otherwise she would have to charge additional for that ā€¦I called and sent her the info and it did cover it based on what I pay to be a memberā€¦ and she agreed sheā€™d take care of it. The very next day she emails me that she is too busy this month and I should find someone else. Why go through two calls with me, ask me to confirm coverage, take our information and then turn down the work? And she did tell me the doc would take a week or two for first draft which was fine for usā€¦ now we are back to looking for an attorney and donā€™t love that she knows some of our personal business ā€¦ then backed out. Really poor form.

I called Ms. Waldinger from New Jersey as I had signed a Contract to purchase a home when I was in Florida the week prior not contingent upon financing. Ms. Waldinger came highly recommended as a Contract attorney in Boca Raton where the home I had signed the Contract was located. Upon my First phone call to her she assured me that she would review the Contract and help me and made me feel better. She asked me to scan or fax the Contract which I did. Ms. Waldinger wasnimmediately on the phone with both real estate agents involved to work through this situation. Within one week she had Both agents and the buyer agree to let me cancel the Contract and get my escrow deposit back in the full amount of $25,000.00 I was so happy with her work and her skills and her communication with me and all parties involved.

Do not EVER hire Manisha. I did. She was late to every court date, not up front at all about where my situation was going to end, and had zero pull or face with the judge or prosecutor. With Manisha on the case (which I payed her 10,000 for) I was placed on house arrest and after a few month was told to either take 3 years or take it to trial. I last minute decided to switch to Joshua Leroy before my plea conference and he instantly took me, and worked whatever card he could to get me off house arrest, without ending in a result with prison time or even probation. Manisha will not even pick up your jail call IF IT WAS A DEBIT CALL (free). Sheā€™s always going to have an excuse why the next case she has is more important than yours. When I had Manisha as a lawyer, my life felt like it was on a ticking time bomb; just awaiting prison. My outlook on my case 100% changed the second I switched attorneys. And I thank god I did, or I would have had to wait 3 years to write this review! Hire Joshua Leroy!

Update from Good Review which I posted when he agreed to help me despite his concerns about the litigiousness of opposing counsel. Unfortunately, the only "services" he performed were to make untrue statements about his schedule to the Judge twice in order to avoid performing work in my case. This Lawyer was my warrior. He was the best I could of ever hoped for and much more then I could imagine. He assisted the original lawyer who had my case. That lawyer was having a substantial amount of trouble and difficulty. In my opinion, he did not have the powerful skills to resolve my case. CLIFF HARK to my rescue. He took my case on and took over. He broke the person I was suing for probate in the deposition. Saving me thousands of dollars by not going to court. He caught the defendant in the deposition in every lie, false testimony and played the roughest game of hard ball I ever saw. Opposing counsel was no match for him either. They were useless to their client when Cliff poured it on. Cliff was just a steamroller to the other side. I witnessed opposing counsel and the person i had to sue crumble under his relentless, intense questioning. This is the man you want in your corner. ON YOUR SIDE. A fair settlement was awarded to me. As for the person I was suing, they got the tar beat out of them by Cliff. He is my hero!!!!!!. I have recommended him to many people over the last 2 years. And will continue to do so. His staff of fellow Attorneys and paralegals were wonderful as well. They are professional, courteous, and extremely helpful. Thank you Cliff Hark and his staff for your EXCELLENCE. If I could give Ken Minerley and the Minerley Firm Law Group zero stars, I absolutely would. Hiring this firm was one of the biggest mistakes Iā€™ve ever made, and it cost me over $50,000 before I had no choice but to walk away in the middle of my case. In my experience, Minerleyā€™s only objective was to rack up as many billable hours as possible with little regard for the outcome of my case. After retaining his services, my case was quickly handed off to an inexperienced associate named Ashley Adras, and from that point on, communication was practically nonexistent unless I aggressively pursued them for updates. Hearings came and went without any proactive communication from the firm, and it felt like there was no real strategy in placeā€”just a series of filings designed to inflate the bill. Iā€™ve worked with many attorneys over the years, and none have been as disappointing as Ken Minerley. It felt like the focus was never on resolving my case efficiently, but on keeping the clock running to maximize fees. Thankfully, Iā€™ve now hired competent legal counsel who are working to fix the mess this firm created. I urge anyone considering this firm to look elsewhere. Save yourself the money, time, and frustration. The experience left me feeling taken advantage of and completely unsupported.

Ken and his partner Christen Ritchey did an incredible job for me. I was hit with a "driveby" ADA lawsuit. The plaintiff and his attorney filed something like 50 or so of these in the span of a few weeks. It seemed like they were looking for people to pay them a few thousand dollars a pop to "go away." Until the suit, I was not aware of the particular ADA requirements in question, but I was happy to comply once I did. As for the legal aspect, Ken and Christen took care of it exactly as they said they would. They ultimately had the suit dropped and it was done cost effectively and efficiently. The best part is I believe justice was served. We complied with the law but didn't have to pay the customary extortionate fees to the plaintiff's lawsuit machine.

Jeff Herman and his team are very unprofessional. They revictimized me truly. When I went to Mr. Herman, I had presented my case with facts and evidence. Jeff, Krisel, John, and Steve reassured me that they would help seek justice for me. Unfortunately, nine months after retaining them, they promised that they were working on my case. I persistently called and asked about the status of my case. Once they realized that my case actually required some work and wasn't an "open-shut" case, they dropped me. They gave me no real reason, if I read in between the lines it was that it wasn't a high monetary return compared to other cases. It's one thing to turn down someone's case from the start but it is another to drop them nine months after you have strung them along with false promises. It was NOT because I didn't have enough evidence, it was simply because they saw cases as dollar signs which is shameful considering they claim to be a "voice for the voiceless." As a victim, this was truly traumatizing and saddening as I had confided in them my biggest demons and promised justice would be served. What attracted me most, was that the firm had two PI's and they were horrendous. They sat on their laurels of being reputable ex law enforcement however, when it came time to do actual research for my case, they were unable to actually do so, literally. It got so ridiculous, they insisted on me reaching out to my perpetrators, as my best avenue of gathering evidence. I even complied and reached out because I was so desperate to get justice. I had asked them when they first took my case to do a generic background check on my perpetrator since they claimed that they had sophisticated databases, however, it was not until my own research I found out one of my perpetrator's was on probation. Then the next week they DROPPED me. It was terrible that they put me in that position of telling me to talk to my perpetrators, the ones' that abused me and took so much from me. Jeff Herman then did not even have the decency to call me and explain why he was dropping me. He had Krisel call which was extremely cowardly. Please before you use this law firm, do your research. This is a common thing he does, look at some of his reviews here and on facebook. He then has family members on facebook review his business as "5 stars". He also has had his Florida bar taken away before, so think twice.

I will never use this firm again, huge waste of time in my opinion. The allegation is as follows: Krisel and Jeff Herman made false statements to me as a client, led me to believe I have a case, told me they would take the case to court for the state it has to do with, when the time came they didn't hire a firm in the state it supposed to happen in, instead they attempted to get a new firm see if they would take the case, this is different than what I was led to believe. It is further alleged that this firm wasted my time, for months and months I waited for nothing.

As an ex-Community Association President, I've used Michael many times for collections, and also for handling matters regarding unit owner violations of the bylaws. Michael was very speedy and reliable with his response time. I usually received a phone call the next morning if he wasn't available to take my call. He is extremely affordable, and actually credited some of our money we used as a retainer to investigate a case. He is honest, and most Community Association Attorneys are not (from my experience). I actually hired him to just show up to a Master Association meeting with over 50 people present, and Michael stood up while I was being ignored by the other association members, and shouted "Let My Client Speak!". He received a standing ovation, and gained automatic respect. As a Community Association attorney, he is the best, and as a new owner of a Management Company, I expect to use him a lot.

The few months Mr. Bass represented me were signed by uncertainty, mediocrity and intimidation towards me. Until I interviewed 1/2 a dozen of other family lawyers to validate the quality of his work. The answers were: 1) negative feedback from colleagues though body language and 2) "Is He a divorce lawyer?". His works consist of billing too many hours, talk a lot, achieve nothing or very little. Then upon firing him and offered a more than generous final payment for all the damages caused and omissions during representation, he did not like the fact of being out of the party, and began a battery of lawsuits first in a county (he lost all of them including appeals). Then he filed a new lawsuit in another county, which he will not be able to get anything but nuisances to me and he will have to pay fees to the attorney representing him; as I have filed for bankruptcy. He has some investigations performed by The Florida Bar, I guess not for being a good lawyer or displaying good work ethics and integrity. Do you want a similar story like this? I guess not. Consult other attorneys instead

If this system would allow me to place a ā€œminus tenā€ (-10), I sure would. Unless youā€™re looking to obtain a HEART ATTACK or start to constantly chew your nails, ā€œ DON'T ā€ depend on Michael R Bass. His communications skills is extremely poor. Emails were hardly answered and getting a return call is like pulling a tooth from a new born. Above it all, he missed ā€œcourt appearancesā€. Due to his lack of filling time and incompetent, I lost my child and ended up with a judgment that almost put me in jail. After taking matters in my on hands, I came to find out it all could have been done fairly easy and everything could have been solved much sooner instead of wasting money and time (one and half year=18 months) to start all over again. After hiring a new attorney, I now have my son back and my judgment was dropped in less than one (1) month. Unable to count own your attorney is like swimming in a pawn infested with alligators believing they will protect you.

Word of advice stay away from Miller and Associates they are extremely unprofessional and don't care about your case. The communication is poor to none, they will not meet you in person even if you request, they will charge you for every item and everything is limited representation they have charged a total of $5899 for my case and when I was reluctant in their professionalism and hired another attorney they kept my $3000 without rendering service be careful once you pay them money they will not return your money and claim breach of contract despite the poor representation. They have been disciplined by the state Licensing authority (see top page )and will treat you and scold you as if you are the defendant instead of issuing guidance and defend you in your case.

Someone complained in these reviews of being told to have a glass of wine. Guess what? After a full day of grueling depositions (questioning by lawyers under oath), I was stressed out, nervous and worried that I messed up, and I was told the same thing. It was clear to me in the whole context that he was trying to ease my nervousness, and adding that was just Jeffrey Miller's way of saying, "Girl, you did fine. You have nothing to worry about. You did your part. I know these depositions can be intimidating and nerve wrecking. Now it is time for you to go home and chill and relax. Have a glass of wine. We got your back and I am holding the legal fort." And he sure did! Jeff won my case hands down!! And, in the face of what I thought were insurmountable difficulties. But one by one, Miller took care of everything. The man is simply brilliant. Just brilliant. Miller seems to know how to prioritize his time to research and to find just the perfect case law that WINS you YOUR CASE! I realized, when Miller is on a roll: just do what he asks. Just send the documents or info he requests. He anticipates and thinks unusually quickly and clearly. He goes into some state of hyper-focus, working on a case it seems. My case was complex. He goes a million miles an hour. And then wants this, that and the other piece of paperwork - and wants it quickly! I just always sent the office whatever was needed in the moment. I could tell they were working hard - for me ! And I wasn't gonna let them down. Scanning and emailing it, or running to the post office as soon as I could. I just stayed organized on my end, having my paperwork in order and ready to be send off. So he can do his job which, it turns out, he does extremely well! Miller might adjust his original legal strategy, in reaction to a motion by the opposing party, or something on the docket that you as a client are blissfully unaware of because his firm is already taking care of it for you. Just trust they know what they are doing, and go with the flow. I did that, and the results were fantastic. Sometimes, it may seem to make no sense to you, but that is exactly where it pays off to have Jeffrey Miller - or he and one of his clever associates, such as Alexandra Rodriquez, together - work for you: They understand something you don't because that is THEIR job. To me it felt as if I had the A-team on my side. They are an impressive bunch! They saved the day, when I thought it couldn't be saved. Don't know how they did it, but they did. I found again, and again: they have a plan to bring you justice, and that plan comes brilliantly together in the end. Help them help you though. Send them 2 copies of everything requested. Send it, organized well, marked well. And: in 2 identical files with your name & case number on it in one envelope. As if 2 lawyers would literally be standing by the front door of the office as your envelope arrives, and they both want to look at all of your paperwork at the same moment right away. I always realized that they are helping not just me, but tens of others, and they have hundreds of papers coming in daily - so I tried to help the lawyers too. (A long time ago, I used to be a secretary at a law office.) I always marked my paperwork with case name and number clearly - and sent it in double. Don't write on the front of originals - mark on the back or in corner of the copy that you send in. And as with everything: Always, keep one copy for yourself. This is common sense. Jeff Miller and his associates have been amazing. Miller has 5 offices and several associates - they are obviously busy - but if they take on your case, you ought to thank God on your bare knees to be so lucky. Five stars ! And a gold medal !! *****

Worst mistake of my life. RUN, from this lawyer and his Associates. They don't really care for you, all they want is your money, once they have it, good luck, you are on your own! If you want someone to fight for you, THIS IS NOT the law firm nor lawyers you need. When you complain, they turn it around and make you feel like it was your fault. They lie, I came to see them in Oct 2013 to file a simple divorce, did not go with the "drive-through", paid higher fees for personal representation. They kept telling me the Petition had been filed since October, but were having problems serving the Respondent, when in actuallity, they did not file the Petition until Dec 3, 2013. Even the Petition as full of mistakes. I only found out because I became frustrated and went to the courthouse myself, and saw the court records. That's when I realized I was in trouble. Too late because I had already paid their fees. I was told that "my case fell through the crack" but from then on I would be taken care of. Wrooong! The lies and misrepresentation continued, the tria was horrendous. The Associate that came with me did not fight for me. I could have done a better job. I could go on and on, but then this would become a book. JUST DO NOT USE THESE PEOPLE!! DO NOT RECOMMEND. Not even a 1 star, BUT IN ORDER TO SUBMIT THIS I HAVE TO AT LEAST GIVE THEM 1 STAR. VERY, VERY POOR.

I would NEVER recommend him to do any other citations for me or anyone. My court cost was reduce but thatā€™s not what the agreement was base on my understanding. If I wanted to pay less I would of gone to court myself.

Never hire this guy or his wife. From day one I knew he was not right for my case and fired him after speaking to some of his former clients. His wife is very arrogant and rude on the phone. Mr. Somera caused me to get six points on my license when he had promised me no points.

when a friend introduced me to this lawyer I believed that it would be a good choice. but after a few days I noticed he was a little crazy not appeared in the hearings, he was always out of state ( i am in florida ) according him he has office in los angeles... by doing this he was asking the judge to make the hearings over the telephone, which the judge was always mad at him. plus he plays with your case. he never gave me a contract to sign. created a fake history of political asylum which I never had. I was into serious trouble because of his attitude .. don't let him represent you never...please listen me up.. don't make that mistake...

I spoke to Alan Ginsberg at length before hiring him. I explained I had some bad experiences with my previous lawyer who never sent me any documents and was not very responsive. He assured me over and over he was not like that and was the type of person that ā€œgot things done in a timely manner and I will keep you informed of everything right awayā€. After hiring and paying him, he recorded himself as the attorney on record. Then he almost immediately became unresponsive. I sent him pages and pages of information and evidence related to the case. He never responded to any of it much less filed anything with the court. I asked him many times via email to respond with zero response. I left him many voicemails which he would seldomly return and when he would, I would just get excuses or ā€˜Iā€™m working on itā€™. Once I didnā€™t hear from him for 3 weeks, he said his son had COVID. Sorry but Iā€™m not sure why that gives you the right to disregard your job and your client for 3 months. I hired this lawyer for approximately 3 months before firing him. When I finally did fire him I found out the opposing attorney had filed 3 or 4 motions over 2 months time prior that my lawyer didnā€™t bother to respond to, or even tell us about! He didnā€™t do one single thing other than tell the court he was my attorney, then months later he was fired as my attorney.

Lacks technical skills - can't even print a document and had me on hold over the call for 30 mins to just print a document. Then the comprehension skills are the poorest!!! could not even understand our case and while sending the demand letter, he sent a word document file with his other cases still in that file. represented us in the poorest and worst manner possible - wasted $1500 USD but more importantly the time. Never ever work with him!

Alan Ginsberg is a terrible lawyer. When I would call him, he would say he would call back later and never do. When I didn't call him, he would insist I called and left a message. He was completely unaware of the records I handed to his firm for my Social Security case. He yelled at me over the phone and repeatedly asked "Do you not understand anything?" My only good experience with working with him was talking to his paralegal, who was nice and courteous. Alan Ginsberg later gave me his personal cell phone number and some toll free number, both of which he did not pick up. When I called back the original number I had used to contact him, his firm had notified me that he was let go for "mishandling" cases. I believe that 100% would also add that he mishandled clients, like me. Avoid him and his "services" unless you want to be ignored and be kept in the dark regarding your case.

I am not just pleased with mr Levine, I am impressed. I spent years and tens of thousands with attorneys that promised me the moon, in the end got nothing and was close to giving up. I was hesitant at first, but glad I decided to take a chance on what was going to be my final attempt at legalization. Mr Levine came tru with flying colors, money not only well spent Priceless! I lost count of number of referrals, yes there were a few negatives.. but I know first hand these cases and people were Crazy to begin with. L P H Leslie.

I have him a depĆ³sit ' cause I had a case going on with the other people in his office just to be ahead when we were ready to fill out paper work with him and we signed a document that stated once he started working in a case we weren't getting any money back, but he never did anything in our case and refused to give us the money back. He went to another place to continue with the cae becase the people on same office working in out case gave us the wrong information and since we were driving two hours away from them considered they didn't know what they were doing. When you pay someone to do a job is because you trust them and expect they do do it right but this people have no respect and are used to dealt with ignorant people that believe everything they say, thus time it didn't happen. Condideting we would be ahead with attorney si that we didn't have to be driving back and forth we gave him the money to hold towards what we were told was going to cost us, but never to start working on anything. SO IF YOU HABE THIS OFFICE HANDELIMG YPIR CASE DONT EVER GIVE THIS ATTORNEY ANY MONEY UNTIL HE STARTS WORKING IN YOUR CASE OR YOU WILL LOSE YOUR MONEY. SHAME ON YOU FOR KEEPING PEOPLES MONEY WITHOUT DOING ANYTHING.

I hired Dara via Proskauer back when her name was Dara Factor, prior to marriage when it changed to Dara Howard. She is basically a decent and intelligence person, though incentivized by her firm to bill with extreme prejudice. A "the client is always wrong" attitude came to prevail and I did not feel represented, but instead felt that our objectives were never the same, so much so that we became in opposition: she and her firm wanted my money and so did I, and every dollar that I retained meant a dollar less for them. I fell into the "sunk cost fallacy" which is that having spent so much money on them I could not admit that the money was gone, that it was lost, and that I needed to accept that. I have put two stars above as a review because there is always hope and room for anyone to improve, but I must emphasize the relationship was not a good one.

Daniel Wasserstein is the epitome of the foreclosure attorney that has no values or integrity and will do anything to get paid. (And I have known high quality attorneys so I'm not generalizing about all attorneys.) If a homeowner doesn't pay their COA or HOA assessments, after a lien is put on the home, and a buyer pays the lien at the foreclosure auction, Daniel Wasserstein gets a percentage of the lien money. If you try to call him, someone else answers the phone, which shows that he is too wimpy to even speak to anyone confronting him. Daniel Wasserstein is a mosquito living in a human body and should be barred from being an attorney forever and everywhere. The address of his office is 301 Yamato Rd, Suite 2199, Boca Raton, FL, 33431.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
