It has been great working with Dulce on my SSD case. She was with me every step of the way, extremely responsive, knowledgable on the process and really cares. I have been approved in a short time and waiting to get the official paperwork from SSD. I would not hesitate to recommend Dulce to anyone going through this trying process.

Doughton stepped in unexpectedly at the last minute to handle a very high conflict child custody case involving domestic violence that had been coming since 2017 and surpassed all expectations. Despite only having a matter of mere days to prepare, he didn’t miss a beat, catching up on an extensive history and developing a potent approach, all while remaining patient with me as I was ready to spiral. He was both courteous and respectful and when the time came, his tenacity, strategy and expertise in the courtroom proved to be not only powerful, but effective. Although I hope to never have to find out, I can only imagine what he would be capable of if he has more than just a few days to prepare. I would not hesitate to recommend Doughton to anyone seeking an experienced family law attorney ready to deliver results.

Attorney Rogers was very professional. She meet me at the courtroom, greeted me and ask where was the plaintiff. I said over there, she tired to speak with her initially. She then said let me go inside and see what the courtroom looks like and i will talk with you. She came back and discussed a plan of attack. Once we got inside the courtroom to discuss my case, Attorney Rogers whole demeanor changed. She took charge. She found, what i would say were some loopholes and grinded, it out. She ask the right questions and got the answers that she wanted and ask the judge for a dismissal. She argued her point, stuck with it. Examined the plaintiff thoroughly and reported her finding to the judge. The judge then ask the plaintiff, if she wanted to continue. Attorney Rodgers again ask the judge to dismiss my case. Attorney Rodgers was relentless and kept grinding it out. Eventually the judge ruled my case for dismiss. To God be the glory. Attorney Rodgers was referred to me by a family friend. I am so very thankful for all that she did for me. Another personal friend commented to me that Attorney Rodgers would do well for me. Again, I am very well pleased and would recommend Attorney Rodgers to any of my family and friends who has a legal matter. I give her a 10 plus for everything that she did for me. God bless you even more Attorney Rodgers.

My wife and I were struck head on by a drunk driver traveling nearly 100 mph and a BAC nearly triple the legal limit. We were both hospitalized for a lengthy time, but needed representation immediately. Thankfully, our family found Mr. Monnett on the internet and decided to call him. From that moment on, he seriously handled everything with utmost class, professionalism and diligence. After a two week court trial, Mr. Monnett was able to prove to a jury the drunk driver was over served by the bar he had just left, thus allowing us to win a settlement from the establishment. This was a groundbreaking case in the state of North Carolina and we are forever indebted to Mr Monnett and his entire firm. My wife and I give Charles Monnett our highest recommendation...

The Downer, Walters and Mitchener team has represented me in two separate automobile accidents and both times I was taken care of with the highest level of professionalism. Andrew Downer represented me most recently and I was very satisfied with the level of service, attentiveness, professionalism and speed of the case resolution. I was never in doubt of the progress of my case or what to expect as Andrew was able to provide experienced insight into the process and steps involved towards resolving my case. I felt that I was a priority and not just another case. I have recommended Andrew Downer to family and friends and they have been highly satisfied with his level of service. I would recommend him to anyone.

Missy represented me in a white collar federal case. She made me feel very comfortable from the beginning and made sure that this conviction had "as little impact as on your life as possible," in her words. Whenever I called to speak with her, she would speak with me immediately and inform me of what was going on, and if she wasn't in the office then she would come to the jail personally to see me. In the event that she just could not make it, another attorney from the firm would come see me. She carefully reviewed my case with the intention of taking it to trial even though I knew that would not ultimately happen. With the exception of hardened criminals, being persecuted by the federal government is a very stressful situation, and it is important that you find an attorney that truly care about your case and about what happens to you. Professional, caring, attentive, intelligent and thorough, Missy Owen is all of these things.

Ms. Rawls was assigned to my case in the Spring of 2003 upon my conviction of Conspiracy to Commit First Degree Murder. I was sentenced to almost 21 years. Ms. Rawls assured me she was the finest lawyer in her field. She kept me up to date on every aspect of my case; and answered all my correspondence promptly. She asked for, and received oral arguments in my case. When she wrote me after the oral arguments were held, at first she responded that perhaps she did not have the courts attention as they asked no questions. Eventually, they asked a minimal of questions. Her opponent, the State Attorney General, could not get a word in as she was peppered with questions from the court. Apparently, Ms. Rawls was extremely well prepared, because she did her homework long before the oral arguments. I received my letter from Ms. Rawls about 4 weeks later stating the Court reversed my decision unanimously, 3-0. This was an accurate synopsis of what I remember the course of my events during my case. From the moment Ms. Rawls took my case, until the court over turned my conviction, was 14 months. I spent 14 months in prison as opposed to 21 years all because of Ms. Rawls and her expertise. Three weeks after I received Ms. Rawls' letter telling me that my convictions were over turned, I walked out of prison. To this day, I call Ms. Rawls on the anniversary of my release (20 JUNE 04) and thank her for doing what I thought no one could do. If you are thinking of a criminal appeals lawyer, there is only one person to call: Leslie Rawls. I have no problem putting my name to this. Thank you Ms. Rawls for all you have done, Anthony

I contacted Rachel when my (now ex) and I decided to divorce. She answered my seemingly endless number of questions throughout the process by providing prompt and conclusive responses. Rachel asked pointed questions without any hint of judgement in order to create our separation agreement. These were personal topics (property, debt, etc.) that are typically uncomfortable to talk about with anyone, let alone a stranger. Yet Rachel was able to make the divorce process as comfortable as one can be. She is discrete. My private information will remain private, which is of big importance to me. Luckily, my divorce wasn't as tricky as some, but that doesn't mean they are fun. I am so grateful to have had Rachel to help me throughout the process, and cannot recommend her more as a family attorney.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
