Got over $$3,500 stolen from my attorney. He promise to take our case to sue a company and every time we asked for updates he will have an excuse. It’s been a year (12 months) and no work was done, we have ask for our money back and he was failed to provide an explanation on where the money is. He said he has to deduct his hours which no work was ever presented to us. In the whole year NOTHING was ever done. PLEASE BE CAREFUL! Update: Ms Andrew provided me with an invoice where he charged us $250 for just REVIEWING emails, this means he DID NOT REPLY, he did not do anything but received it. Emails that he decided to ignored, he wants us to sign an invoice for a check when he is not even acknowledging the $200 that Mr River promise to add to our fund. He is also charging us more than what we had agreed on. The agreement was that he was going to charged $250 for every HOUR Working on our case. He is charging us $250 for emails WE send asking about our case! EMAILS he decided to ignored. And unless he has a disability I can’t understand how long it took him to read my email. We got over $3,250 for him LOOKING at our emails. Please be careful because if that’s not stealing money idk what is. In the refund the wants to give us is only for $375 back and asking us to sign a disclosure saying “we are happy with his service and all charges are accurate” IF THATS NOT STEALING PEOPLES MONEY, I DONT KNOW WHAT IS! Funny you claimed we didn’t dispute the charges when we are asking you to send us the drafting work you claim you did. And NOTHING HAS BEEN PROVIDED. WE ARE DISPUTING ALL THOSE $3,250 that you did not work, you ignore emails. I dispute those charges as soon as you sent them.

Andrew was 45 minutes late to our first court appearance. I was sent multiple reminders from his firm to appear at the correct time, and I was getting more and more stressed when he did not show up. I called his office and they had no idea where he was and assured me that they would contact him and find out. Finally he showed up 45 minutes late. I did not get an apology or explanation for why he was late. Andrew was representing me in a tenant eviction where the tenant was living in my property without leaving for 6 months. This is the first time that I have ever gone through an eviction so I hired him. He was supposed to check the rent bonds each month so that we could remove the tenant any time they did not pay their bonds to the court. He failed to check the October rent bond because we were attempting to negotiate with the tenant. Instead he waited until November and then realized the tenant hadn't paid in October and we could have filed to remove her weeks earlier. This inaction lost me 1 month of income. He will probably reply here that he didn't check the bond because he was negotiating - but I fail to see why both tasks are mutually exclusive. I am literally paying for his time (retainer paid for his hourly rate so it's not like I asked him to do this for free), so why were the tasks I asked him to do not done? When I asked Andrew to acknowledge this mistake or provide me with a discount on his rate for the income that he lost me, he sent me the following reply, direct quote: "I have 100 other cases going on besides yours. The rent bond information is publicly available. So, it is also something that you could have checked just as easily." If he has 100 other cases and can't give my case the attention it needs, maybe he should take on less cases. And obviously if I was a legal expert and could have gone through this process on my own, I wouldn't have needed a lawyer in the first place. EDIT - He was absolutely 45 minutes late. To deny that would be an absolute lie. I sat in the court room by myself while the judge skipped over me and went to other cases, and she directly said that we can come back to mine when my council shows up. And I did bring this up to Andrew by asking him to state clearly (by email) exactly what time he would be at court for the next court appearance. As for why I said "Thank you" in emails??? and didn't call out the issues immediately it's because I was afraid that if I call out ineffective work during my case, that I would be retaliated against and the work wouldn't be performed at all. There's a reason I had to follow up over 100 times. You are also misrepresenting me here. I NEVER once asked why you didn't file the writ of possession while we were negotiating. I understand ethics very well. I only asked why you didn't VERIFY that the tenant paid her bond. Isn't the saying "knowledge is power"? When the tenant flaked from turning up to sign the negotiated paperwork, we should have been able to file the Writ of Possession Immediately. Or even immediately after our court date. Instead because you never checked this fact, we had to wait weeks!!

Service - 0 stars Quality of work - 0 stars Any type of case resolution - 0 stars A waste of my entire fee that was paid. Mr. Gordon - It seems all your time trying to prove to my cc company that you did the work I paid for was most of the work you did, because that's more work than I ever saw for myself.... Which is what I told them, and the reason it was in your favor was because one of the deadlines of my cc company to reply to your response expired and I was not aware. As I explained to them, all the paperwork you showed them were never provided to me, and the reason I asked for a refund in the first place was due to your lack of communication, professionalism, and any type of quality of work (or lack thereof). It's the only logical explanation in the first place, since I have paid money for services which I have never received, and I have no resolution of the case you were hired to perform. Presumably, if it took you “several hours” to refute my claim, you didn’t start out with enough evidence to disprove it in the first place. And my “audacity” comes from being the fact that I am the one that ended up wasting every penny I gave you, with nothing to show for it. I think that you are the audacious one, to think that I am not deserving of any refund, because you had to spend time to manufacture evidence of your work you did for me. Edit to respond to your edit: I'm responding so that we stick to the facts as opposed to manufacturing hyperbole and you misrepresenting what happened, and taking no responsibility for your actions as a professional. To reiterate, I lost the chargeback because, as the bank told me multiple times, we went past the deadline required by the bank to respond. In addition you showed the bank "evidence" of work you had done for the case, which I had never seen before, and could have easily been manufactured after the fact. And to keep facts straight again, I never disputed the fee charged for the consultation, only the fees for the case, which was never performed. Way back I asked for a refund from you when there wasn't even any work performed yet, and you offered me a very small fraction of my fee. It was then that I realized you were not going to be reasonable and I initiated the chargeback. Throughout the time of the case I had to continuously do my own legwork for the case and emails to you went unanswered for days at a time. I was also extremely dissatisfied with your attention to my case, and knowledge of procedure, which is another reason I asked for a refund. I had to hire different representation for my case due to your lack of attention and resolution. I find it interesting in all of your responses you never claim to have represented me or found any resolution in my case. I think if you had finished the case, and then I initiated a chargeback, that would be a scam, not me trying to get some money back before the case was started because I was dissatisfied with your service. You offered me approximately a 25% refund of my original fees, which was before anything was even started for the case. If I had been represented to my satisfaction, or you recovered any damages in my case, I would have not asked for anything back, obviously. In this case the scam seems to be accepting my total fee with no resolution or progress to my case, and I find it preposterous that you expect you should be compensated for time responding to my dispute, when I was dissatisfied with my service in the first place. Also I think we should leave anyone accepting credit card payments from me out of the equation, since you have zero knowledge of the subject. I hope my fee is worth it to you, since you seem to have a business practice of accepting funds for work not done, which seems like more of a scam to me. Merry Christmas

Tharp and Stephanie were excellent in guiding and providing updates through out the process of my case. Without even meeting them once, everything went through emails and phone calls. I am pretty much happy with thier process and procedures. Except the final amount (which could have been better in bargaining), I am happy with the rest.

I’ve now used Paul twice. He’s been more than just a great lawyer, he’s been like a shark in the very best way. After getting denied for disability on my own. I again went to Paul for help. After the first meeting and getting all my information there was very little else I had to do. He kept me in the loop all the way. Up to the day of court, then when I got there he had already spoken with the judge and got the approval for my disability. Paul and his staff are absolutely wonderful in my book.

ABSOLUTELY HIRE THIS LAWYER and THIS FIRM Andy O’Hara, a litigation lawyer at DeMayo Law, represented me when I had a serious injury. I called other lawyers, but I chose Andy because he talked to me on a personal basis rather than treating me like a “case” to handle. Andy asked me many questions, and then he LISTENED to me…not many lawyers actually do that. He acknowledged what I said to him, advised me about the process and some hurdles we would face, and actively assisted me through my healing process. When it came time to file the insurance claim, he helped me set reasonable expectations for the process and timelines. We filed a lawsuit to get the insurance company to treat my claim seriously. Andy did a great job of preparing me for the various stages of litigation. Ultimately, when we had an opportunity to have serious negotiations about settling the case, Andy made a compelling presentation of my injury, the pain I suffered through, and the physical, mental, and emotional experience that affected me in so many ways. Andy put all of that into words that expressed what I was feeling. In negotiations, we set a value that I would accept, and he stood his ground with the defense counsel until the insurance company finally paid what we demanded. In every step, Andy communicated with me, consulted with me, and made me confident that he was working to get the best result for me. I will reach out to Andy if I ever need a personal injury lawyer again and recommend him without hesitation to anyone who does!!

If your real estate agent recommends this scum, run. They will protect the interests of the agent/real estate company...not you, the one who has hired them. Despite begging for help due to some shady business practices with EXP Realty, they refused to help me. They get super upset when you record conversations, too. There is only one reason for that: you have something to hide. Enjoy explaining these recordings very soon.

I would be nervous to have this group representing me, at least not when selling a house. Not only do they seem to do a sloppy job, but they don’t seem knowledgeable - and no one wants that when you are dealing with large amounts of money. I originally did choose them to represent us for the sale of my home because they are covered under my legal plan. When I called, I made sure to confirm they would be covered. They confirmed. Well, after turning down the attorney our realtor referred us to, we decided to start the process with them. First, the person who I started working with is a paralegal and not an attorney. That didn’t bother me bc I figure it would be like that in any other law office… but she started asking questions that made me question her competence. She kept asking my realtors for the closing date, which was directly written on the sales contract. Apparently, she just wanted to see if the closing attorney had scheduled it yet… but the sale process had only just began, it was strange that she would already ask for that. While all that is going on, we get a sheet with some fees we had questions about. Turns out, our paralegal was out for half a week, so I called the main office. They had no idea what fees I would be charged. I was not given to someone who could handle any questions or issues while the paralegal was out, I was just told ‘who knows.’ You would think you would have someone cover for you while you are out in case your clients have any questions or to move things along. Not Soto Law. The straw that broke the camel’s back for me was when the paralegal was finally in the office, she sent a group message saying we are not covered under my plan because it isn’t my primary residence - 2 weeks into hiring them. That is not acceptable. They have you send them your benefit number and sale contract before assigning you to a paralegal, so there is no excuse for not checking benefits at that time. As it turns out, without asking us to confirm, they assumed that the property we are selling is an investment property bc we marked that it is not our primary residence. In actuality, we had to move before it was under contract so it was never a rental propert, it was just our previous primary residence. And bc my legal plan doesn’t cover rental properties, they said we were not covered. By that point, I didn’t care that we were eligible for benefits, we decided working with this group would be much too risky and decided to go with attorney my realtor suggested. If they aren’t even aware that a second property doesn’t automatically mean it’s an investment property, or organized enough to verify benefits in a timely manner, I don’t have have much confidence something wouldn’t go terribly askew on one of the biggest sales in a person’s life.

We just closed on our first home with Soto Law and absolutely could not be happier with the experience. We ran into several hiccups and communications with our lending team. Emily Watson, the paralegal assigned to our closing honestly kept the whole thing together. She kept the process moving forward even when it appeared to be stalled. She was kind and patient with us, our realtor and the sellers’ realtor. Brad Watson, the attorney who performed our closing, was knowledgable and personable. He answered all of our questions in an easy to understand manner. Could not have asked for a better experience during such a stressful experience. Many thanks to all!

Joel decided to take my $250 consultation fee to get on the phone with me and tell me he couldn’t help me nor was he familiar with the area of law I was needed help in. His information was recommended to me off the MeckBar site for the issue I needed. I sent my requested paperwork in on 8/13 and Instead of emailing me saying “Hey I can’t help with the area you need” he opted to ask me to do paid phone consultation 48 hours later for $250. Immediately upon our phone call he tells me he’s not familiar with the area of law nor would he know a defense. I asked if I would then get a refund for the consultation or lack there of. He said no.

I’m a social worker and speak with lots of people on a daily basis. He is very knowledgeable and I look forward to having him represent me in my matter against my employer. He is a caring attorney and knows when he has a claim and that is what you want. He picked out all elements of the claim and knew which he can tackle with confidence. With that being said, I know that there is no promise that a claim can 100% be achieved and he is upfront about that which is apart of their ethical responsibilities and speaks volume on his character. Thank You, Mr. Littlejohn

I was very pleased with the Law Offices of Banks Huntley. I called and got an immediate response. Mr. Huntley said he felt sure he could help me with my issue. He was aware of what the cost would be and between the court cost and his fee, I felt he offered a very reasonable solution to handle my case. Within a very short period of time, I got an email with the resolution, which was just as he had described. I could not be more pleased with the outcome and the services I received. Would highly recommend him.

Just wanted to give a big thanks to Mr Banks Huntley. He took over my case in July of this year and got my case dismissed. He is one of the best lawyers in Mecklenburg County. He communicated with me every step of the way, he gave me options and clarity on my case. I really appreciate all you did. I highly recommend his services.

On March 12, 2021, a lady ran a red light when the car beside her turned right on red. She was on her phone. I was going through a green light. Needless to say, we crashed in the middle of the intersection. After hitting the front of my car, the impact caused her to spin around and hit my driver's door. That turned my car into a commercial sized van which caused me to t-bone him. Then, the van spun around and hit my passenger's door pushing my car across seven lanes of traffic. This accident totaled my Lexus convertible which was in mint condition. Cars like that with no accidents and low mileage are very difficult to find. I mention that to say, you can get another car. However, you cannot get a new spine. This accident herniated C-4 to C-5 and further damaged C-5 to C-6, also damaged C-7 to C-8. My life came to a screeching halt! Initially, I couldn't move either of my arms. The policeman at the scene had to tell me what happened because I only remembered the van and didn't know what caused the accident. I was going through a green light! On April 12, 2021, I had neck surgery replacing C-4 to C-6 with two plastic discs, six screws and a plate in my neck. I am saying all of this to let you know that I have been in five other accidents and never had to have surgery or miss work! After hiring two other law firms which were no help, I was referred to CRLegal Team. They believed in me and worked hard for very little money! One would think that since she ran a red light, this would be a no brainer! No, her insurance company saw me as damaged! How could I prove exactly what this accident caused!?! There weren't any MRIs before this accident, only after! I didn't do anything wrong! I was in the wrong place at the wrong time! The policeman told me that I was the fourth person in an accident at that location. However, I am the first person to survive! I am here for a reason! CRLegal Team has been a huge blessing! So, anyone out there who has been in an accident and wants honesty, integrity, and a strong work ethic, just skip all small firms and others who are headquartered in other states. They want to make a fast 33% and put forth no effort! It bothers me that those other law firms each received a portion of CRLegal Team's fee! They did almost nothing! Thanks to CRLegal Team my medical bills were reduced 75% and I received a check on Christmas Eve. I am grateful for their hard work and highly recommend using them! Don't hesitate, just call now, you won't regret it! Thank you so much! Nancy D. Campbell PS A huge shout out to Lisa, Joe and James for going to the mat for me! I am sure everyone there is first class! Like I said, call them!

I would just like to say that being this was my first time needing legal representation, I am so glad that I chose CR Legal team. I was hit by a tractor trailer and needed help on navigating how to proceed. They have helped me tremendously and they were always available and willing to answer any questions that I may have had. My attorney Marty was nothing short of amazing and kept in contact and helped me understand a lot of the process and how things would work out. The case managers that I worked with were great. Thank you CR Legal Team!

Absolutely fantastic to deal with. I filled out the form online, they contacted me immediately. I had constant updates via email. I did not one time, have to go to an office, I did not have to attend court, I did not miss any work. I had a traffic ticket with a reckless driving charge. Reckless driving was dismissed and ticket SIGNIFICANTLY reduced. I would recommend Hayley Iticketlaw a million times over. They really saved my "bacon". Thank YOU 🩷🎉

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
