Jennifer Purdy at Popowski & Shirley, P.A. provided exceptional legal service for my case. I was very pleased and grateful for Jennifer and her Team. She explained the legal process in layman’s terms, was honest, upfront and most importantly, she is highly experienced and very professional. Communication was clear and concise. When I had questions (trust me, I had a lot) she was readily available. Jennifer always kept me informed and guided me throughout the entire process. If you are looking for an attorney, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND Jennifer Purdy at Popowski & Shirley, P.A.

I reside in Virginia. I sought an attorney to help me change the ownership of a deed to property that I own in South Carolina. Via email, I requested a quote from six South Carolina attorneys who practiced real estate law. My experience follows. Of six attorneys, two attorneys responded. Gary A Pickren (with Blair | Cato | Pickren | Casterline, LLC) was the first to respond. I researched his firm and read his profile. I liked what I read. He quoted $200.00 to complete the work and said if I provided the current deed, he’d subtract $50.00. I provided all he requested. Gary determined what I wanted and secured my business. His associates Brandon J Gregg, an associate attorney and Chris Kinon, a law clerk afterward worked with me to derive the product. They promptly answered my questions and quickly delivered the product. I found them to be a down to earth group with to work and to be professionals at preparing the product. On that note, the product looked good, so good that I had thoughts of framing it. As for their service (deed preparation and recordation), their performance was outstanding. As for their product (a deed and affidavit), the quality was excellent especially for the price. Given my experience with them, I highly recommend Gary A Pickren and his firm, “Blair | Cato | Pickren | Casterline, LLC”.

I am the Fiancee and mother of a "Criminal Offender". My sons father and I came across her accidentally, we had a meeting with Jack Swerling. But he called to reschedule with my sons father, of course he didn't answer. Raia was an associate at the office at the time. And decided to get information down for Jack (lawyer). My sons father was rearrested for drugs (Ice) and gun charges. I hired Raia to represent him for bond hearing, since it was a rearrest for same charges, his chances was slim to none. Also, because he was rearrested for the same charges his bond was going to be revoked. Raia (The Beast) got him a bond (a low one) and beat the revocation of his bond. Against all odds she had us on the other side. I am forever grateful for her. I am a natural stalker, she answered ALL my calls. I called her everyday.. Kept me in the loop of every avenue his situation may take. I always said I trusted only 3 people, God, my mother and father. I've recently added her to my list.. She gives her all.

I am out of work due to a work related injury. Workmens comp was trying make it seem like a personal injury. I contacted Cain & Williams and had a consultation where I met Matthew Robertson. He listened to everything I had to say and took my case without hesitation. He helped me get my checks started and corresponded with me on a regular basis. Calmed me down alot too when the company wouldn't give me meds or therapy. He is the definition of true southern hospitality representation. You couldn't ask for a more caring and thorough lawyer.

To make sure my Daughter Savannah whom is now 23 has been treated fairly and as justly as he possibly can and has always through the past 16 years kept in contact with my daughter whom was a minor that was left 25% of an estate that was worth over $600,000 ..in real estate alone. thus leaving the other 2 biological siblings to basically take what did not belong to them. Completely forgetting about another biological son that was incarcerated at the time .. leaving the adopted daughter to take over the job of representative only after the appointed biological daughter had cut timber off of 40 acres continued to rent out 14 trailers and of course take rental fees from them for approximately 7 years before probate actually stepped in and made her take trailers off of property. Mr.Gannt would say it would be over my dead body any one of my worthless children get one red cent of mine..he was sick with kidney failure and not for months before he passed did any of them visit bring food help him bathe or clean . He loved my daughter and she loved him. So to make a really long story short .A minor has no voice in probate . Mr. Myars has always been her voice. HE has always even to this very day looked out for the best interest of my daughter..He has Christian values and I may not have always agreed with Mr. Myars. But I have always been Thankful me and my daughter have had him in our corner. YOU ASK WELL WAT EVER HAPPENED TO HER SHARE OF THE ESTATE..my daughter settled for a few measley thousand literally a few . They all will have their judgement day for all of their greed. Every one of them should be ashamed of their selves for treating an innocent child with such hate and discontent..

Kevin Whitfield serves with compassion and full knowledge of the law. My daughter is bi-polar and had a confrontation with a police officer while she was in a manic state. Public Defender Whitfield worked with the prosecutor to reduce her charge from a felony to a misdemeanor. We are grateful for the time and effort Mr. Whitfield put into this case.

Ken won a $6.5 million settlement for the Riveras, whose son was born brain-injured at the hospital at Ft. Hood, TX. According to the lawsuit, Kasie Rivera’s pregnancy had been proceeding normally until near the end of her term, when the doctors decided to induce labor because the baby’s growth slowed down. Even though fetal heart monitoring showed the baby was in distress in the womb, the doctors kept Kasie laboring instead of doing a C-section. When the baby was born he was severely brain injured. Suing a government hospital is hard, but Ken did a great job and got the Riveras a settlement that will help them take care of their son for the rest of his life. Based on what he did for the Riveras, I think Ken would do a wonderful job for anyone needing his help.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
