Terrible lawyer. Claims to have the best interest for minors but is EASILY fooled. No research conducted to verify facts or statements given by the other parties. It was later confirmed that all statements that were provided to her were fraudulent and written by other parent. Also did not follow up with drug accusations or verify their accuracy. Essential her “interest for a minor” was to put them right back into the hands that neglected them. Thanks Amanda!

This attorney failed to represent my best interests at every juncture. Apathetic, lackluster, lack of communication via email or phone. She double billed for conflicting paperwork, NEVER provided legal counsel as to pro's/con's of course of action, and in no way represented/advocated for the best interest of the client, Rather I did all my own work AND paid her over $15,000. The final lack of ethics and integrity on a long list of them: She decided to deduct my CURRENT FEE'S, INVOICE UNSEEN BY ME, due date not yet passed (and I've ALWAYS paid on time, right away), from the net proceeds of the sale of my house. The MSA stated she would receive proceeds, ensure the 5 agreed upon joint bills were paid, then evenly divide the funds between my near ex and I. Instead, she took it upon herself to go ahead and deduct the next invoice due and then mail me the difference, which was not agreed to within the MSA.

Ms. Coffey handled a very stressful problem and helped my second grader get out of a terrible school situation and into a school that the district claimed was too full for transfers. She genuinely cares about families and children and handled the situation quickly and efficiently. Highly recommended.

I'd rather pay full price for an attorney than have Donna Bloom's services pro-bono. My last consultation with her was comprised of Donna Bloom ranting and yelling at me, simply because I was disappointed about not having any of my phone calls returned after two weeks of trying. I was screamed at, told to shut up, and was called insulting names by her.

Wonderful lawyer. Donna Bloom had taken my case on a pro bono basis and treated me better than when i was paying my previous lawyer. My case was an extremely challenging and complicated case and Miss Bloom was professional and compassionate thoughout the entire process. I will never forget how she was there for me during the worst time of my life. I sincerely thank her and her team

I can't thank Eric enough! He was awesome during this whole process. His honesty, integrity and sage advice were instrumental in my difficult circumstance. He was straight up from the very beginning and I couldn't have been happier. Eric's paralegal Stormi was also outstanding. She understood the challenges and really helped me understand the process. Stormi was comforting and kind. She was on top of every detail and was great at responding immediately. Eric came highly recommended by my buddy (Barry F.). This was the best decision I made! Please consider Eric and his awesome staff!!

I would highly recommend Eric and his team for anyone who needs a divorce attorney. Eric handled my case professionally, quickly (as fast as courts allow), and I always knew the next steps. He was upfront about managing my expectations. He will ask you to complete a co-parenting class that I found to be extremely helpful; I wish my ex would have been required to take it. He had a game plan going into mediation that was 100% successful. His team responded to my queries immediately. I will continue to use the Navarrette Family Law for any future custody needs.

BEWARE OF THIS FALSE ATTORNEY SHARON WILSON, I hired her to represent me with a child custody battle back in 2020. At first she was doing her job and keeping me informed about my case, until Sharon fell off the face of the earth mid April 2021. I must have emailed her 10 times, texted her 10 times, and called her 10 times. Sharon Wilson doesn’t even have an office, she has an office address but no office they are a front for people who can’t afford an office. Sharon didn’t even give me a contract to sign or anything. Becareful of this so CALLED ATTORNEY. Sharon Wilson is a person that makes you think you have someone good on your side until she has you in her grasps and just falls off the earth and never gets in contact with you again, when you need her most. I was under a lot of stress and anxiety during the periods of time when I could not reach her or receive a call back from her. I finally put in complaint with CAAP for help and they advised me to do a few things. I did them and still Sharon Wilson never reached out to answer me. So then finally I was advised to file a grievance with the TEXAS BAR ASSOCIATION, which I did. They finally got her to respond to me via email and she was really rude to me because I filed a grievance and she had to respond. So after Sharon Wilson released my file to me I went to another attorney for help and told him what a nightmare it was working with Sharon Wilson. His reply was “ you are not the first client that I have had to help because of her ”. He was sorry for all the stress Sharon Wilson put me through. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED, BEWARE OF SHARON WILSON ATTORNEY FOR FAMILY LAW. Before you hire this Sharon Wilson for family law look at the Texas Bar association for the complaint against her!

She failed to file a critical file in my case. Looked lost in court. Very unresponsive to getting back to me. I mean I went looking for her and her office is in a car garage where I was told is I'm not the only one looking for her. At a very inportant meeting she changed to fit her time, then texted me 20 min before and said just go in with out me and never heard from her long enough to go looking for her. I needed a lawyer but went in alone and let her go right before court because she had not a clue on my case. If you got her right now you are probably seeing these reviews and thinking yep im going threw the same thing. I feel dumb for letting her get me. Thought she was God sent. Guess devil sends them 2! Horrible!!!!!!

My divorce is now almost a year in and she has been extremely unresponsive and disinterested. I actually went several months without hearing from her. Once my ex hired an attorney to review his paperwork, she changed the type of divorce it was to gain more money. DO NOT USE HER.

This man Cary Thomas Piel was my attorney in 2004-2005. Cary Piel would not aggressively defend me like I had wanted to. Cary Piel took no actions such as evidence suppression, lowering my bond amounts, or allow me discovery of evidence. Cary Piel was very verbally abusive and would only allow me to plea bargain. I was convicted of many charges which could have been successfully defended resulting in dismissals. Cary Piel did not follow my directives and broke confidentially on several occassions.

I reached out to Michael Fox for a real estate matter this afternoon based on a list of attorneys that was provided to me. Although, I was expecting to get a voice mail, Mr. Fox answered and confirmed that he was an attorney. When I explained I was looking for help with a real estate contract, he responded abruptly, "I don't do that. And, certainly not on a Sunday afternoon.". Then he just hung up. I was surprised at the lack of professionalism and that Mr. Fox exhibited by implying it was my fault for calling him outside his business hours at the number he has posted everywhere online.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
