Was consulting with them about a matter I was wronged in. And was continually cut off and brushed off. They don't work they don't listen! As I'm now seeing this is the same complaint in many other reviews. I was just yelled at by an attorney because I was asking questions. Find another law firm! Trust me I've dealt with many attorneys this is not the one you want to do business with. Have tried to work with multiple lawyers in this firm. They all give the same nonchalant vibe!

I was given info on LegalShield through a representative who came to my job. I signed up and had a matter that I needed legal assistance with. I called and spoke with an attorney who was extremely unprofessional, he kept cutting across me, jumped to conclusions and offered me no options to help resolve the matter, stated that the representative who spoke to the employees lied and gave misinformation, was NOT empathetic to my situation, very cold and lacked decorum. I called back to report it to a customer service representative and she never apologized for my bad experience or encounter, she too was non empathetic. This law firm has individuals who lack social and emotional awareness for people who call and are just trying to get some direction and insight. And even if you can't help, it's a way to do and say things. From the other reviews I'm seeing, I'm not shocked at the experience I had today. LegalShield certainly needs other attorney options for NC!

Burton charged a pretty penny then when things were culminating to a ruling she asked the judge to bail on the case. When the judge said no she got insulting in our meetings and had both parties visit her office to make "settlement". This is not an ethical move, as I came to find later. Bottom line : she sold me down the river to satisfy her own agenda, despite charging a hefty fee. Many years have passed and her actions during that tumultuous time have continued to cost me, in the form of near zero visitation with 2 children for many years. Hiring her was a lifelong mistake!

Ms. Burton is thorough, intentional, and the epitome of professionalism. I've worked with her for almost 2 years on a particularly contentious custody case. Ms. Burton was honest with me about where my expectations should be and diligent in making sure that the ultimate outcome was what was best for my family. There was not one aspect of my case that was overlooked - her attention to detail is unparalleled. She is brilliant, savvy, and aggressive when necessary. The saying goes that 'nobody wins in family court', however, with Ms. Burton and her team on my side, the outcome exceeded my expectations.

I have been working with Jill for almost 5 years now. My case is complex, and I have had many ongoing issues with my ex. I have always found Jill responsive, prepared, and highly competent, as well as caring and empathetic. I have my children full-time today and have very adequate child support due to Jill. I know she always has my back when new issues arise. I would highly recommend her.

Divorce/support I really should of considered the reviews before I signed and made payments. She seemed great until a little while after the first payment. Near the end she wanted to "further review" my account statements to verify income which had already been repeatedly verified as ssi/ssdi. To which I declined. To which her response was "If you do not comply I will be withdrawing from your case". Something she had already tried to do once before. I practically begged for her to please find a path forward. I was met with "you just want to take her to court". No, I wanted help. Didn't even make it to having a court date. I'm financially collapsing. Personally I think she wanted those statements to either see if she could charge me more (just to review them even) or to turnover to the "Defendant". I'm overall pretty disappointed. Nobody would take my case except for her. She talked good. Though I was repeatedly warned by my postal carrier about this attorney. Guess I should of listened? To her credit I'll at least say she's quite responsive. I'm sure she will have some sort of response for this. Refute it if you like but this is what occurred. I should probably edit this and go even further in depth. This is a decent summary for now.

We hired Laurice for an emergency custody order. The language of the order needed to be changed in order for law enforcement to legally remove my daughter from the home. She refused to change it. When she finally decided to have it changed, the order was STILL wrong. She refused to hear the legal advice the sheriffs explained to me. In her exact words "She knows the law." She had advised me to serve the order to the person myself after being aware of him and I going to criminal court for him assaulting me. Her exact words were "What are you scared for if you have your grandmother & boyfriend with you???" I cannot make this up. She filed a motion to withdraw because the judge asked me directly if I had a question, and I asked one valid question. She stormed out the court room leaving me in front of the judge. Immediately after court she was waiting outside the door to tell me "she is no longer my attorney." Lie #1. She was still my attorney until the judge approved her motion to withdraw. In her motion to withdraw form she emailed me she said "I terminated the relationship between her and I." (lie #2) and told me to sign it. Of course, I refused and explained why. Because it was not the truth. She then emailed me a new motion of withdrawal form and took the false statement out. She talked over me many times to prevent me from communicating any questions or concerns to her. She has hung up on me. She has been very rude and bitter after our first payment to her. Her ego was very big for someone who did not help my case at all. She left it up to me to communicate to the courts myself after hiring her. After doing so, I was finally able to get my daughter returned to me. What was suppose to be a process in a matter of days turned into weeks because she does not do her job. During those three weeks my daughter was in harms way when she could have been home long ago. She still decided to keep our money after doing nothing but gave us a "professional discount." She is very bitter, I'm not sure who hurt her but she does more harm than good. These are false reviews. Real reviews from real people are on google.

Laurice McClain is knowledgeable, straight forward and keeps her peddle to the metal. With her knowledge and experience she formed a clear strategy to come to court, with a motion to modify my alimony payments. With her guidance we accomplished what we set out for. Her charges were reasonable. I would recommend her to anyone (especially men) who need to navigate complex family law and have confidence you have the best advise on your side.

An attorney who knows Mr. Read very well told me that Dan has taken the positions he has in family law cases out of ignorance. During the conversation I told that attorney that I couldn't understand how a well educated man could do so other than he must only be concerned with money, and that I wished Mr. Read knew the negative impact he had on our children and our community when he uses the courts to alienate father's from their children. I could never describe to you the anguish that my child demonstrated because Dan saw to it to have her father placed in a jail while knowing I was struggling. As a teeneger my daughter still talks about how ill conceived his positions seem to be and how poor his behavior must have been to do this to a childs parent. (...) the father plays an important role in childhood development. He must be a model for the boy and a precursor of a lover for the girl. If he decides that bringing up children is the woman's job, his children are in trouble." - Dr. John E. Sarno Mr. Read has a long history of attacking people at a personal level, filing frivilous motions, making false statements to the courts and filing orders that are not factually indicative of what occured in the courtroom. He is especially contemptuous toward fathers in spite of maintaining the persona of an upstanding christian, community man and father. When asked what I would tell him if he asked me what I felt of him I replied ~ 'You should be ashamed of yourself.'

Worst non-responsive attorney I ever had to deal with. Someone referred him to me. And immediately I see problems. Mr Headen was lnt familiar with traffic laws so I continously had to update him on changes. He clearly over his head in this area. So I tried to end any agreement we had and he refuse to refund me. My son was without his license for 15 years. He had tried reaching out to other attorney's but was not successful. We reached out to Attorney Headen and explained the circumstances surrounding his case and he immediatly started to work on it. There were fines that had been paid off that were still showing up at DMV. He researched all that information, and within a month , we were in court and my son had his license back. Thank you Attorney Headen for the professional service you rendered. You are very efficient and most of all trustworthy! Your name speaks for itself. I hired Zaneta when she was at a Winston Salem firm after being recommended to her from another firm I had been using in preparation to take a matter to litigation. I paid Bourlon and Davis $5,000 to handle communication in a private matter for me, and they have done nothing. They are now refusing to refund my money. These are the kinds of lawyers that give lawyers a bad name. Camilla Davis has been censured by the NC state bar for lying. I hired Camilla to help with my divorce and child custody. I was left unsatisfied, misinformed, misled, and broke. Camilla frequently missed court appearances, yet still charged me. My case never even made it in front of the judge as I was told I didn't have enough money to continue and I needed to settle. After speaking with others, I was told how unprofessionally she handled my case. I'm now having to find a new lawyer and I'm starting over with my custody hearing. I did not feel I was properly represented and my voice was never heard. I am deeply saddened and heartbroken over how the case has turned out and my goal is to help others avoid what I went through. She eventually stopped answering my questions or even helping me. She only calls when it's time to pay my bill. I never received notification that she was no longer representing me. One day she just stopped returning my calls and emails. Do research before choosing Camilla.

When the deliverables were repeatedly done incorrectly, the refrain was that I didn't understand the IP process - and that because I am new to the business world, my dissatisfaction with the work was unjustified. The condescending tone carried throughout the process as I was made wrong for wanting the work to be done correctly and shamed for the level of accuracy I expected. This was by far the most unfortunate experience as I embark on what should be a collaborative process toward innovation. In the end, I was dismissed abruptly as a client over email.

Never had been to court before, and I trusted her. She said I didn't need evidence that I told her I think we should have. She told me we would get if we needed it but that my testomany and pictures would be enough. That my case was an open and close case and that she knew the judge and it would be fine. I was redivided on the Stand for not having evidence and my case and I lost because of it. She gave me the impression the the opposing party was going to consent to the charges, right up to the day of the trial and it didn't go that way so we had to have a trial in which she was not prepared for.

My daughter was in a very abusive dysfunctional marriage. She came home to safety. In a fit of ignorance and desperation, we called Reba Sloan Smith and asked for help. Reba said she wanted $15,000 CASH UPFRONT! We asked to pay $5000 upfront. Reba ‘demanded’ ALL or none. She said: “when I through my hat in the ring; I am in for the count.” My daughter lost her home and all her property and custody of her son; under continued on-going physical and emotional abuse; all of which, we made Reba totally aware of. $30,000 later, my daughter is destitute and trying not to die. Reba refuses to answer our inquires or show the slightest bit of remorse. Reba not only moved without notifying us; made us file our own papers; did nothing about existing restraining orders; but told my young battered daughter (without ever speaking to me) to “shut up” and sign the papers allowing her, then, husband and Grandparents, to take possession of the property and child. This may sound like “sour grapes” and it IS; however, as God is my witness, it is TRUE, and does little to reflect the Nightmare we have been through and continue to go through, in part, thanks to this unhappy experienceL.

In July of 2018 I was referred to Donna. I hired her to read and negotiate a contract that I was going to enter into with a co pack manufacturer for my company. Donna read the contract and advised me that the contract indemnified me but not the co pack manufacturer. However, she did not negotiate better terms on my behalf and did not do more than read the contract although she knew exactly what I wanted her to do because I was very clear with her about my goals. Donna did not communicate with the co packer, she simply read the contract. She did not represent me in any way. All she did was read the contract and tell me what she saw and did not like. That was the extent of her services although she claims to be an attorney the represents small businesses and understands the challenges that we face, especially as a startup. Her poor representation allowed the co packer to take advantage of me and cost me a great deal of money. As a startup and small business her poor representation shutdown my business in 2018. It has taken me a year to recover from that horrible set back and financially things are still difficult because of what happened with the co packer. Unfortunately, there are attorneys who want to make money and take money and don't tell the truth about their level of experience in an industry.

My agent ordered the closing paperwork 2 weeks before closing but they did not send out the documents for us to sign and notarize until 4PM 3 days prior to closing and she spelled my name wrong. Not only did she spelled it wrong, she spelled it in 3 different ways. Then she couldn't find the 15 minutes to fix her spelling mistakes first thing in the morning and we did not get the corrected documents until 3:45 PM, after my agent repeatedly called her throughout the day. We now only have 1 day to get the documents signed and notarized then drop it off at her office or would have to delay closing. When I went to pick up the check on the day of closing, she spelled my husband's name wrong on the check and closing statement. I was half way to my car when I realized the misspelled name and had to go back in to get a new check. Also, she never apologized for the multiply mistakes or the last minute paperwork. Very unprofessional and wouldn't recommend to anyone.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
