I was in a bad situation. My wife had just passed away. Probate was not a situation I truly wanted to deal with at that time of grieving. As a matter of fact, I would have given away much of what I had legally coming to me at that point. Then her family, and their attorney became overly greedy and began belittling my marriage. They even wanted to take things away from me that I knew beyond a shadow of a doubt I had legally coming to me. I did not want to get my own counsel at the time of my wife's death. I thought the family and I had a great relationship and we could do all the necessary things amicably. I was wrong. The family drove me, forced me into finding my own representation. I could not have come up with a better person to help me within this troubled time than Howard Reiner. While he was a dream come true for me for a multitude of reasons, I am sure he was quite the nightmare for the opposing side. I am not proud of the fact that I ended up with more than I had originally wanted, however I would have been less proud if I had just laid down and taken the beating the family and their attorney wanted to dole out to me. Lucky for me, Howard Reiner was on my side. Thanks Howard.

My sister referred me to Douglas Evans because she hired him to represent her on a felony case and got all charges dropped. So we hired him to represent my husband and he also won his casefor him inwent in front of the judge and case was close without any consequences so we surely will recommend him to anyone that we know or who would need a lawyer... Cause he does work on helping you all. Thank You Douglas Evans,From Lorraine

Rusty Hardin was exceptional and generous with his staff and resources during the time he spent on my deceased husband's estate. It was an extremely complicated matter with alot of grief and emotional distress for me and my daughter. Rusty and his associates faced it all head on with legal patience and expertise. Unfortunately the "Enron" case occurred during the probate which took all his attention and the case was transferred. He and his staff handled the initiation of suits with phenominal patience both with me and transfering of the matter.

I can not express the deep gratitude and appreciation I have for this attorney. Not only was she professional, friendly and on top of things, but she made sure she called US and kept us updated. She addressed our concerns with genuine desire to make things better and demonstrated this by her actions. This attorney is a Tiger in court and fights for you and on your behalf. She always treated us a human beings and not like paying clients. With our last attorney all she requested was more money and we always had to be the ones calling and leaving messages to know what was going on. We were treated as a mere meal ticket for her, not as people in need of help. Ms. Arntz is by far the whole package of what you want in an attorney. I would not hesitate to recommend Ms. Arntz to anyone.

Heather was an excellent attorney. I received regular updates from her regarding my case and never once felt like I was in the dark. Her communication with the opposition was very professional and to the point. I hired another attorney when my divorce proceedings first started, but the case just seemed to drag on and on. Once Heather took the reins, the tide shifted and the divorce settled in a short time. I firmly believe without Heather handling this case I would still be fighting my ex. If I had a need for her services again I would hire her again in an instant no question about it.

There simply aren't enough words to express our gratitude for Charlene. Left feeling hopeless and taken advantage of, she went above and beyond in representing us and fighting on our behalf. She took the time to understand our case, both in term of the legal facts and the personal toll it was taking on us. Her hard work brought us much needed closure and results we only dreamed of. We wouldn't hesitate to recommend her and her firm to others and hold them in the highest regard as both attorneys and compassionate human beings.

He did a great job! Fair price! Timely! I had another friend going thru similar circumstances. Mr. Burton provided services in less than 1/2 the time and for 1/2 the expense. He listens to your dilemma. One must realize , there is a lot attorneys cannot renegotiate due to the laws. But there are a few alternatives, and Mr. Burton researched my options with his resources and colleagues and provided an equitable resolution. You do have to disclose all that both parties have on the table to explore the options. My agreed order was primarily changes in child support and visitations. That was finalized by the court. The ex was behind in other matters and did not want to go to court and Mr. Burton researched a settlement out of court for that matter. His assistant is very helpful and patient. If you are in a hurry just let them know and keep pushing. they will work with you. Do your own research, it helps understand the limits attorneys have. You need to provide as much help as you can since all circumstances are different. I will use him again if needed.

On initial consultation, he informed me of the severity along with the consequences of the charge brought against me and began to lay out a comprehensive defense strategy to address. Always kept me updated regarding the case status and in the end got the charge dismissed in rapid succession once hired. Hope to never be a position again to require a criminal attorney, but if I ever need one, he will be my first call.

Mrs. Musslewhite was retained by our company on a difficult Chapter 13. Our last lawyer let the debtor live mortgage free for years. Mrs. Musslewhite got the situation resolved in less than 2 months, and we received all of our money back with interest. I don't know how she did it, but we were extremely pleased. That is one smart lawyer.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
