I was a 17 year old in high school that made a stupid decision and got caught. It was my first offense and the court assigned me Jessica Needham for my defense, and she was wonderful. She went above and beyond when taking the innitiative to get me the most minimal punishment possible. She kept me 100% informed on my options and everything that was happening and could be happening. I would DEFINATELY recommend her to someone in need. She has an amazing heart, is completely trustworthy, and very knowlegable of law.

Pat Batton walked me through one of the most difficult times of my life. We filed in May 2013 and completed the process last day of that December. Step by step, she explained the process of divorce and gave me great advice at every stage. I never thought I would need to get a divorce but I can honestly say that she helped us to have a good one.

I find myself lucky to have been referred to Grant Tabor. I found him to be very approachable and strongly ethical. Grant thoroughly explained the pros and cons of filing for bankruptcy and of Chapter 13 vs Chapter 7. He explained all of the steps we were to go through, while at the same time making us aware of worst case scenarios. After our initial consult, I walked away feeling that we were making an informed decision rather than one based on desperation. Grant was really great about answering questions which helped ease some of my worries as we were going through the process. I plan to never have to go through bankruptcy again, so hopefully I will never need Grant’s services again, but I would recommend him unequivocally to anyone else who is looking to hire a good lawyer specializing in bankruptcy.

Mr. Gavrizi was my second attorney to help me sue a real estate building in Austin, because the landlord owed me $9000 of refund rent. Mr. Gavrizi contacted my forst attorney who did not perform his duty on schedule, and gathered all necessary information and documents from him to further proceed with my case. The entire lawsuit was pro bono for me, which I felt very gracious about. It took about a year to get a default judgment from the district court thanks to the help of Mr. Gavrizi, which granted me damages in the amount of three times the amount that the landlord owed me. During the process, Mr. Gavrizi was always responsive, and helped to explain legal terms and procedures to me. I'm thankful.

I've worked with Alex for over a year on various pharmaceutical and medical device litigation, including the Actos litigation, in which Alex tirelessly reviewed and re-reviewed medical records in order to increase settlement values on our clients' cases. Alex also filed numerous appeals on behalf of our clients in order to increase settlement values. I would highly recommend Alex to clients and other attorneys looking for consultations regarding pharmaceutical and medical device litigation.

Following Hurricane Harvey my wife and I were facing difficulties from a multitude of directions to include new disability, insurance adjusters underpaying, mortgage servicer derailing construction efforts and threatening foreclosure, to name a few. Before a windfall of back pay from disability left my wife and I ineligible for his pro bono work he and his firm were affording to us and our situation we were honored to have Mr Tomayo assigned to our case. I was somewhat apprehensive at first at having such a young lad holding the legal reigns of some issues that were fundamentally the totality of my wife’s and myself a life work but Mr Tomayo would soon prove to us to be a very capable advocate who provided quick, prompt, and vigorous attention and advisement with little incentive offered other than knowing personally that he was doing a good job. I found through four or five successive lawyers and firms that were to (mis)handle our case, for quite a hefty price tag (in fact to spend all of the windfall) with either zero or negative consequence results, Mr Tomayo’s advice even in comparison to some high cost legal teams consisting of a team of lawyers with a half century of experience, was the best Lawyer that money could not buy. I will be checking in from time to time on Mr Tomayo and his obvious path to great success. Mr Tomayo has found the secret that so many have missed or either lost somewhere along the way which is you must never build the base of the foundation of your success on or with money: I hope that mr Tomayo doesn’t allow the majority of his coifed brethren to corrupt or erode his values and personal conviction to offer his clients the best care available. I pray that the evils of this society and the sad desperation of which his chosen profession will no doubt introduce him to will never break his spirit to do good and to do what’s right for his clients regardless of the circumstance or financial incentives. Mr Tomayo is cut from the strongest cloth in regards to character and perseverance and we only wished we could have continued with the supers advocacy we had while in his care. Will recommend to anyone for anything and if I could afford to have him on permanent retainer (it’s not for sale) I would pay whatever price to have him back (his bill to me was zero) As I said previously he is the best attorney that money can not buy (I’ve tried) Thank you Mr Tomayo, I drink to your continued success

As part of a reorganization, I was demoted and another employee with less experience, education, and knowledge, of another race was selected to replace my role. I had to report to a less qualified manager an train the new manager. I met with Taneska to discuss my concerns and moved forward with hiring her to represent me. Taneska worked diligently on my case and stayed in constant contact with me during the process. During the case, I was still employed, Taneska provided excellent advice to guide me through working in a hostile environment. After receiving a demand letter and negotiating with Taneska, my employer agreed to pay a settlement prior to my case being filed with the EEOC. Taneska is honest, easy to work with and hard working. I highly recommend her services.

I had another attorney prior to Neal to deal with significant dispute as an owner in a HOA . The HOA had filed to foreclose due to fines/late fees and at that time I reached out to Neal's firm and within 24-48 hours, Neal had stepped in, communicated with the HOA sufficiently that the HOA decided to change their attorney. Neal's actions and understanding of laws in which he outlined the HOA's serious errors in taking the action they did led to a settlement with a reduction to where the HOA collected only a fraction of what their claim and removed their legal fees from the claim. He absolutely had the HOA on the run and I believe based on the HOA release had we gone to court I would have prevailed and won damages for the HOA's actions.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
