Ms. Banks was my attorney starting in January 2011 and represented me for several years from that point, through more than one custody battle. My case was extremely complicated and convoluted. Page definitely did her homework and took all the extra steps to fight my case. She even came in and watched some public cases that could have affected my case, in order to be fully prepared to fight for me. It was a long, hard battle, but we came out on top in the end, and Page played a vital role in that. I 10/10 recommend her as an attorney.

She never let him know what was going on. He even showed up at court because he was not notified it was canceled. He missed a day of work and she apologized but she was expensive and he would've been better of with a cheap lawyer that took time to explain and cared about their client. I don't recommend her.

Going through a very tumultuous and contested divorce, I had to fire two previous counsels because they were not listening and acting upon my demands. With less than 2 months before mediation and trial, Ms. Alexander worked tirelessly to ensure she was very familiar with my case and had to play "catch-up" because my previous counsel did not submit crucial documents in a timely manner nor provided the due-diligence and technical expertise that I was paying for. Without a doubt, anyone going through a contested divorce needs Ms. Amy Alexander's methodical and technical approach to resolve their divorce. When I met Ms. Alexander, I referenced my scenario as "we're in the 4th quarter with 2 minutes left and I need a miracle". She delivered!!! This isn't a bunch of hyperbole, she literally save me thousands of dollars in alimony and child support. Finally, she is one hell-of a meditator who knows the law.

She was rude, unprofessional, and practiced poor ethics. She has a bad attitude, and seems very entitled does not follow directions also does not have a good demeanor with most family court judges in Madison County. She works for one of the big name on the door guys but that still doesn’t guarantee the quality of her work.

I naively went to Amanda Canupp for my divorce (2017). I told her about the abuse I suffered. Physical, emotional, and mental abuse. I've come to learn, after firing her for later services (2021) that all she did was put my case in a que/ on a conveyer belt without dedicating any personal focus or attention to my case or custody scheduling. I've come to learn that my ex should not have 50/50 custody with me, and because the case settled, there is nothing I can currently do. It should have been done right the first time. Four years later, I need the help of my attorney to file a contempt charge. Not only does she ignore my requests, but my ex-husband filed one, because Amanda blatantly ignored my request, I was not able to file my counter in time. She WASTED hours and weeks and money. I would call and/or email and receive no response for over one week, multiple times, during a time I was in great need and paying for her services. This happened on many occasions. Her excuse when I got her on the phone was that I was not at the head of her cue, and she assured me that when my case came up, I would be the priority. This is non-sense, and her lack of dedication and delays caused me to incur more expenses and I was not able to take the actions I was paying for her to assist me with. I fired her, humorously enough, she emailed me back within 30 minutes, and 'told' me we would "discuss it tomorrow", as if I were a child. I did call the next day, and gave my complaints. We talked for about 45 minutes, not at my request. Guess what.... she charged me for that phone call to. She works under a respected name in Huntsville, AL, which is why I hired her, but she is not a advocate for her client. The money I invested in her services for my contempt $6,500 (in 2021), was money wasted, but was still obligated to payed. I went on to another attorney, and my case was resolved with LESS cost and a positive affect. If I had stayed with Canupp, I would have been out $12,000 and a negative final impact to my case. I am certain. Lanier Ford should reimburse the $6,500 I paid this firm for my contempt case, but if I called, i'm sure they'd charge me for that too. I am a single mother, educated, was going through difficulties in my life and received no respect from this attorney.

Amanda picked up my case when my prior lawyer abruptly closed. She reviewed and revised my filing including pleadings and QDRO. She made improvements and resolved all of my concerns in same business week. Her charges were minimal and her services were outstanding. Had I started with Amanda, I likely could have closed my case in half the time at half the cost.

I hired Mr. Hess over the phone to represent me in a custody case that my ex had unexpectedly filed. (I was living out of state at the time.) My initial meetings with him went well and I trusted that he would do a good job defending me at the pendente lite hearing. This was my first experience in a courtroom setting and I was largely ignorant of the rules governing testimony, particularly as hearsay is concerned. Apparently Mr. Hess was ignorant also as he failed to object to much hearsay given by the other side. He also allowed a lot of irrelevant testimony into the record without objection. I lost custody at the hearing and I firmly believe that his poor representation had a lot to do with it. He's a nice guy but was extraordinarily careless with the most important thing in my life. I hired a different lawyer to represent me at the final hearing but unfortunately the damage had already been done. I am still trying to dig out of the hole created at that hearing over 10 years down the line.

I generally appreciate how they handled the case itself. They helped me to understand what was important and make sure we did what was necessary. That being said, towards the end of the case, they asked for an additional retainer which I paid with the trust that any unused retainer would be refunded. I ended up negotiating an early end to the case, which brought it to a close sooner than expected. After the case closed out I patiently waited for the judge's orders and final executed agreement and it wasn't until I contacted them twice that I was finally given these documents. They told me that their email server had crashed, though apparently they made no effort to verify that necessary communications had gone through. Once I told them I wanted to close out the case and get my final itemized billing statement it became very difficult to reach them. I had to contact Legal Shield just to get Mr. Campbell to answer. He eventually sent me a statement with many obvious overbillings, such as: * an erroneous process server fee (which he admits) * billing for a subpoena for a court appearance Mr. Campbell missed (which had to be rescheduled, everyone else was there but him) * billing for me to go back and forth with them to obtain the end of case documents they never sent me Mr. Campbell said he would review the statement and make any corrections then get back to me. However, since this response from him I haven't heard back from him and it is clear that he is not interested in providing fair and accurate accounting. I'm not sure what's going on, if he's just busy or if he really doesn't care and thinks it's beneath him to be accountable to his client who's paid him thousands of dollars for representation. Whatever it is, it's unacceptable and he should be ashamed of himself. I placed my trust in him and was not treated like a valued client in the end. Keep that in mind when you think of letting him hold onto your retainer. You may not get it back and he may not care to be transparently accountable about how it was spent.

Hired John to take on a claim I had against a car insurance company that was incredibly difficult to deal with in settling this matter. The Insurance company's client rear-ended me, sent me to the hospital and I had lasting injuries afterwards. John immediately took the case and spent nearly a year arguing with the insurance company. In the end, he got a huge settlement for me!! Amazing attorney!

She will not help you. She will talk all fancy and run her mouth and laugh at her own jokes. If you don't have a lot of money or be willing to pay her in cash, then she may take your case, but she won't do anything to help you, and when you lose your case she'll blame you then tell you that you owe more money! If you don't pay she will start threatening you and may even file against you because you are a day late with your payment. She honestly believe the other attorneys in the area like her, but they have all said they can't stand her because she lies constantly and is into some pretty dirty shady business deals.

Conversations with her are rude and disappointing. She is unorganized, she blamed me for not having a case put together. Then when I received no calls from her about what the next step was. I emailed her to find out, which was met with hostility. I tried to explain that I was just needing to know what else she needed and what sort of case we were preparing. To which she responded, I don’t put any plans together for cases because they might change. Scary to have a lawyer who doesn’t know how to prepare a winning argument. But to have someone who doesn’t prepare at all you mine as well not have a lawyer. At the end I told her I got a different lawyer. So she proceeded to charge me the entire retainer with charges for everything she could think of. Then when I ask them why I was being charged 140$ to read my email, she said “we may not track our time very well, but we keep track of what we do.” Then she said, “you can’t do anything about it!” And hung up on me. I’m surprised to feel bullied by a lawyer but i guess it happens.

You'd be better off just going with another attorney. Working with Rachel was very discouraging. She and her staff are rude and unprofessional. Simply calling or email to ask a question was met with hostility, as though I were bothering them by being concerned about my case. Her prices are comparable to the prices of other lawyers, just save yourself the extra stress and find a better fit.

I've never written a negative review on anyone or anything, but I know how difficult even the most simple disagreements can be during or after a divorce. With that in mind, I feel compelled to write this because I can't stand the thought of someone having to go through what I went through with Jonathan Pippin. First of all, as another reviewer said, you will be charged for your "free consultation". Also agree that he uses the "there's plenty of time for that" on a regular basis. And ditto on the response time - consistently ridiculous. Chronically asked for delivery items last-minute which would send me scrambling, only to later find that he wouldn't even submit them to my ex-spouse's attorney in time. One thing he is good at - and he's brilliant - is taking a meeting with you to calm you down and renew your confidence. This guy promises everything and does nothing. That is not an exagerration. But be warned, he has a calm, warm and reassuring manner that goes against the stereotypical attorney and he can sell you in a second. Do not hire him. You will only be adding more chaos during a time that's already plenty tough enough. Good luck to you.

Took my $3000 retainer, then once he had the money made a practice of putting everything on hold indefinitely. Seldom responded to emails or phone calls. Constantly said he would do something on my case, then wouldn't do it despite repeated requests. He waited till October 20 to email me a multi-page, very detailed 'Discovery' questionnaire sent to him by the opposing lawyer on September 30, giving me only days to complete it....and then would not file Discovery papers for me on the opposition (he continually put it off, saying "there is plenty of time for that"...and it never got done). I asked for Mediation. For three months he said he would set it up...never did. With the trial date only weeks away (and no evidence of any "preparation" on his part), I was finally forced to give up on him and retain (and pay) another lawyer to pick up the pieces.

I am not going to pass judgement here I will just state the facts: Vague contracts which allow him to charge anything for anything like a 5 minutes call to push him to do his job and which costs 250$. Your balance will be drained fast mysteriously He never has a strategy or a plan for anything, “all depends” on something or another. As far as his negotiations skills He made an agreement with my ex’s lawyer to allow me to see my kids especially for Thanksgiving and Christmas, I was never been able to for the simple reason that he never ratified the agreement in court in front of a judge. His skills: He used templates from other cases to submit my paperwork and I had to attract his attention to delete wordings from the other case. Later on he was supposed to send a letter to the ex to force her let me see my daughter, 2 month later I asked him for a record of the letter, I was shocked to see wordings such as “Your ex husband says that he”, but the acing on the cake was the wrong address where the letter was sent. Because of that specific issue, he fired me and kept my deposit, as I said just the facts."

Jimmy Sandlin represented me on a case in which he estimated the cost of his representation and had me sign a vague contract with no stipulation for a per hour rate after the retainer fee was exhausted. At our initial consultation he even informed me that the retainer was "plenty" for the work that needed to be done. After only drafting one settlement for me and receiving a counter, I was ready to sign, and felt I had gotten EVERYTHING I wanted. In our meeting, Sandlin wanted me to continue to negotiate. I had to strongly insist that I was ready to sign the agreement. He then asked me to pay 20% more than we had agreed to, citing the signed contract even though there was no stipulation for additional costs. He also never kept a transparent accounting of how my retainer was spent.

When I called to schedule an appointment initially, he was available right away. During the call, I asked what his hourly rate was and the number that was provided to me turned out to be much less (over $100) than what was billed. We had a 30 minute meeting that only took 20 minutes and were charged for the whole 30 minutes. Also, Mr. Wisner researched our issue for almost 20 minutes on another day and at the end of this, we have nothing to show but a large bill and wasted time.

**Disclaimer: The opinions expressed in this review are my own and based on my personal experience. This review is intended to provide an opinion only. Choosing a lawyer is a personal decision and should be made after careful consideration.** I recently received a letter from this attorney representing my ex-wife. The letter lacked substantive factual information and, in my opinion, reflected poorly on the attorney's professionalism. Here are my observations based on this particular instance: 1. **Lack of Factual Basis**: The correspondence appeared to contain unfounded assertions with no supporting evidence. It felt as though the primary motivation was financial gain rather than a pursuit of justice. 2. **Inappropriate Conduct**: The attorney's documentation seemed to condone inappropriate behavior, such as a significantly older adult texting a minor with whom he has no familial relation. This is deeply concerning and should be unacceptable to anyone aware of the risks associated with child predators. 3. **Encouragement of Double Standards**: The attorney appeared to support double standards in co-parenting, disregarding the fact that both parents have 50/50 joint legal and physical custody of their children. 4. **Disregard for Cooperative Efforts**: It seemed that the attorney placed little value on efforts to work cooperatively for the benefit of the children and all parties involved. The focus appeared to be solely on her client's desires, with little regard for fairness. This attorney also appears to condone their client utilizing email communications that are based in foreign countries in order for the client to circumvent United States subpoena laws and practices. 5. **Aggressive Tactics**: The attorney's approach included threats of legal action and arrest, which I found counterproductive to fostering cooperation and resolving disputes amicably. 6. **Unprofessional Communication Techniques**: The letter sent by this attorney included a “PS” section, typically known as a postscript addition to a document. I could find no instance where this is practical or deemed appropriate in legal documentation, nor could I find any professional legal document where this technique was utilized. It made it seem as if the client had written the letter and the lawyer just sent it with no regard to how unprofessional that technique would be perceived. In a city like Huntsville, I believe there are better options available for those seeking legal representation in a divorce. This is, of course, my humble opinion based on my experience.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
