Robin Ratner is a knowledgeable and highly skilled attorney that works in the best interest of her clients, not herself. While compassionate is a description usually not associated with attorneys, it is truly what she is. Don't let this softer side fool you though, she is a fierce fighter, tough on the opposition and not someone you want to go up against. You want Robin Ratner in your corner. Robin went above and beyond for me and I could not have been happier with the results. She exceeded all of my expectations.

I had know Michael Francis from two prior encounters 1) Guest speaker at the UCLA Extension program in Environmental Management and 2) His firm represented an small oil company in the LA area that was undergoing an environmental audit. I was very impressed with both his legal skills, and even more so with his technical understand of engineering processes. Later, I found out he was an engineer prior to attending law school. I recommend that Western Waste, my employer, hire Michael and his firm to represent us in a State of Washington Superfund PRP notice we received from the Washington State Department of Ecology. The site was a carbon regeneration facility in Yakima, WA. Overall, I believe Michael to be one of the finest and most ethical attorneys in the environmental field. He is an excellent attorney.

I was the victim of a car accident caused by a drunk driver and sustained physical injuries. Outside of one real estate transaction, I have never consulted a lawyer and assumed that I could handle this on my own... until the insurance companies started pressuring me to settle for less than the cost of my initial trip to the ER! I was referred to Paula and my only regret was not contacting her sooner. She is friendly and professional, and her paralegal is incredibly proactive and competent-- they make a great team. They got me a settlement I was very happy with, and more importantly, did all the drudge work involved in dealing with insurance companies and claims... their leg work on my behalf was worth as much to me as the settlement! You're in good hands with Paula Norman.

Cedric helped me with a Temporary Work Permit for Canada and he was fantastic. A true expert, he was always super responsive, supportive and he had his way of getting in touch with the consulate to make sure my application was getting the attention it needed. I am a USA citizen, and following a DUI conviction in California, I was banned from entering Canada. Cedric walked me through the process of obtaining a special waiver that would enable me to pass the Canadian border again. He made this whole scary process completely painless for me. I am now able to go do business in Canada again ! I recommend his services to anyone looking for a reliable/perseverant immigration attorney.

We are a small company, and were caught up in a partnership dispute when we met Mr. Kevin Lussier through Farmers Insurance, who brought in Veatch Carlson for our defense. Originally, we hired an LA firm to defend our company when the suit brought against us, before Farmers had time to review the case. Once Veatch Carlson came on board, I asked our attorney from our original LA firm about Veatch Carlson, "What do you think about Veatch?" His response was "Are you kidding me, when I heard about it, I was scared!" Needless to say he was very impressed. In the end, we settled before going to court and we are extremely happy with the settlement we received under Kevin’s leadership! We are all grateful for Farmers Insurance bringing Veatch Carlson to our rescue, and specifically to Kevin. We were all comforted to have his reputation and expertise on our side. My grandfather used to tell me, "It's not how much you pay, a good deal is when you get what you pay for." Did we get what we paid for? You bet - every penny!

David Parker was recommended to me by other lawyers --and a peer recommendation, by lawyers who know good legal work when they see it, is the best referral there is. And he was as reputed, a "class act." Knew his stuff, and was rather astoundingly responsive, even to the point of working on a weekend, You could not ask for better service. Thank you, David.

After getting into a pretty traumatic car accident, I inquired to Mr. Morales to see if any of my medical needs could be covered, or if I was entitled to any compensation. After an initial consultation, Mr. Morales made me feel very comfortable with the idea of moving forward with him. There was no surprises throughout the whole process, and Mr. Morales was always straight forward and upfront, even when things didn't go exactly according to plan. I would highly recommend Jesus Morales if you're looking for an attorney whom is honest, reliable, and results focused.

I have used Mike's services for contract negotiation/drafting as well as law suits. In all cases I've been very pleased with the outcome. For the contract negotiations Mike made himself available for frequent and often last minute meetings as required to get the deal done. He showed an eye for detail in reviewing the contract terms and provided good suggestions to overcome issues with the other party. He turned around analyses and re-drafts typically within a day. Every deal he has worked on with my company has successfully closed. With regards to the lawsuites Mike has worked on, he has shown that his philsophy is to settle the matter as soon as possible and minimize all costs including legal. This approach has servied us well on the cases he has worked on. I am comfortable providing a strong recommendation for Mike for these types of services.

His depth of knowledge in many subject matter areas of the law, seasoned litigation skills and his solid and practical business acumen made him a stand out. He understands the need to be cost effective and work in a team environment. I recommend him whole heartedly.

Mr. Cox demonstrated solid understanding of the law and exceeded expectations in his performance with the client. Though a seemingly young attorney, his interactions were of the highest professional caliber. He responded to each of my emails with clarity and promptness, without the legal jargon received from previous attorneys. Mr. Cox delivered what was promised and more. He gets things DONE -- I highly recommend Mr. Seth Cox.

Paul Marks has represented our nonprofit in a complex land ownership case lasting almost seven years. Through the years, he has tirelessly and doggedly been able to defend against no fewer than six attorneys at once. We were fighting a large developer and a City government. Mr. Marks convinced the City to dismiss with prejudice. Won a judgment against the developer and a verdict against a former ally. He also won an award of over $1 million in attorney fees in a case were were told did not allow for collection of attorney fees. He continues to represent us through the appellate and collection phase. Mr. Marks has also potentially discovered millions of dollars in misappropriated public money. He has done an outstanding job of representing us in the public interest. We highly recommend him.

Paul is one of a kind. When I was put in a situation that required a lawyer, I was upset, angry, and filled with dread. My past experiences with lawyers have not been positive and I was worried that I was in for more of the same. I spoke with a lot of attorneys and I kept coming back to Paul as my number one choice. You know how sometimes you talk to someone and you trust them from the get go? That’s Paul. Starting with our very first phone consultation, Paul was empathetic, upfront, candid, approachable, had a plan and perhaps most importantly had his guns out, blazing and ready to fight for me. Paul is intelligent and extremely knowledgeable about the law. He is results driven and understands how to get the job done. Paul has handled much larger cases than mine, and I am blown away at the level of service he clearly gives all of his clients. I never once doubted his ability or questioned his dedication to my case. He always laid out all the possibilities and the best course of action regardless of whether that meant the most money for him or not. I always felt he put my interests first. When I had questions, Paul would break down the legal jargon in a way that made sense. He also made sure I understood and agreed with everything that was happening. He never went forward with any aspect of my case without my giving the green light. He is extremely responsive. The majority of time I received a response within a few hours of my contacting him. He even made himself available on weekends. I admit it - there were times that I was ready to break down. Paul talked me through and figuratively held my hand anytime I faltered. When I was nervous about being in court, he offered to take time out of his day to show me around the court house. He also sat with me in a court room and explained what was happening and what I should expect on my day. He always had my back and never judged me. Paul went above and beyond over and over, again and again. You will not regret having him on your side. He’s a brilliant litigator and an amazing ally.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
