I had the privilege of working with Shana L. Curti during one of the most challenging periods of my life, and I cannot express how grateful I am for their guidance and support. She who took the time to thoroughly explain every step of the process to me and helped me feel informed and empowered when I felt alone and hopeless with no clue of what to do. I always felt that my best interests were being prioritized and for that I am thankful.

I couldn't be happier that I chose to go with Michelle. She's honest from the start. She tells you what you need to hear, she doesn't blow smoke or make promises to get your business. She fights for what's fair, will put you in your place, but through it all is supportive. In negotiations she's an artist. Strong, firm, calculated, and sees the whole picture. She doesn't shy away from going to trial (some lawyers do) but she's not afraid to do what's necessary to get what you're entitled to. Lastly, she does NOT rack up the legal fees. Many times she would tell me "I'll do that if you want but it's not necessary and I'd just be charging you for something you don't need". You'll know you made the right choice if you go with Michelle.

I agree, if you can get another attorney DO SO!! He was court appointed for me. After my first court date I did not hear from him for more than a month after several messages until the day before my appearance at the court. I trusted that he knew what he was doing and he had little or nothing to say in my defense while the other party had an amazing defensive. Achhh! I so regret not listening to the advise of one of the reviewers..my own..GET ANOTHER attorney!

Mr sheeckutz has always been available for me 7 days a week. I have to say that in the past when I retained other lawyers I found it almost impossible to get a return phone. Sometimes waiting days for the call back. Mr Sheeckutz has been very successful in negotiating business matters as well as personal matters on my behalf. I feel very comfortable in recommending Mr Sheeckutz for practically any legal matter. I saw 2 reviews on this website that seem out of character. I personally know many people who retained Mr Sheeckutz for their legal matters and have been extremely satisfied with his representation.

Went to Mr. PANERO’s office to consult about a divorce, the opposing attorney was well known to him and he didn’t want to take my case, i had at that point been through 2 attorneys by that point because they couldn’t handle the antics of the opposing attorney in the court room. His advice was to just give in and not go to trial with child custody involved, and a dead beat dad scenario . I did not take his advice and gladly so, for if i did I would have lost completely and perhaps custody too. Peter PANERO has been around for decades and is quite comfortable $$$ he don’t care for his once razor sharp craft and command of a court room, he is extremely condescending and pretentious in manner and anyone can see this by just meeting him. We sat with him for an hour and a half, he spoke of himself for just about over an hour alone. By the time we were done i needed A Bayer aspirin from hearing all the bragger conversation out of his mouth, at the end of all his BS, he said he has no interest in the case. He was scared off by Jill Stone, clearly as he heard her name his demeanor changed!! Again, his belly is full and he only takes easy mark cases and ones that have desperate clients which he fears them into spending vast amounts of money!!

Panaro is a low rent mob attorney. No expertise in matrimonial law. He goes with who is his “cash cow” as he says. Respectable attorneys and judges consider him a joke. They have told some so. He doesn’t care about anything or anyone but himself.

Appointed attorney for a child support case I had in child custody about a few months ago, my word super unprofessional, very rude when talking on the phone, doesn't pick up the phone regularly, knowing she screwed up, tries to switch up her attitude knowing that I would give her a bad review in which she should have thought about that before treating me like trash. I complained that my long island train fare went up which made it unaffordable to pick up my daughter and said that i didn't have much funds to get my daughter clothes only for her to tell me to get clothes from the salvation army/ goodwill. How much do you think i would take till I've had enough? You put a bad name in lawyers and attorneys in the state of Ny.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
