Our firm used Jonathan Everett extensively when we were in the midst of a period of explosive growth and needed the perspective and advice of a seasoned lawyer like Jonathan. He is deliberate and clear in his guidance, responsive and collaborative, and was pivotal for us during this critically important period. I have used Jonathan extensively to advise me personally concerning the laws governing my relationships with the corporations with which I transact business. He has been quite responsive, very ethical and highly knowledgeable. His work at Skadden Arps and his experience as a venture capitalist give him a good base and good perspective for a wide range of business related issues. I have felt quite fortunate to have his guidance and have always had confidence that his advice is well-considered. In addition I have found him to be quite candid in disclosing areas of the law that he feels might be outside of his areas of focus.

I would highly recommend Kris to other potential clients. He is knowledgable in many areas of the law, has great analytical skills, has the ability to negotiate multiple technical details, while at the same time seeing the big picture. His "recall" ability is amazing and he's a great writer and speaker.

I have worked with Kris over the last year on a complicated double tax situation. I found him to be the one person I can rely on in addressing the issue and moving it forward. When a company is up against a state run agency, it feels most frustrating and hopeless. But Kris has been steady and like a rock to hang on to. Kirs has introduced us to how the system works and continues to work with us to get the issue looked at and, hopefully, resolved. I also heard Kris speak at a business meeting and he is well spoken, funny and well organized. People enjoyed listening to him and he was able to present his material so it could be understood.

Recently, I hired another attorney and they were fine, however, family law was all that they could handle. Mr Bellmer was able to handle criminal as well as family law, because domestic violence was used. His ability to move back and forth through different courts amazed me just how he could keep up with all of it along with his many other clients. Regarding me, he had a mountain of STUFF to overcome even with me interrupting him, he was still able to methodically and systematically overcome everything the opposing lawyer accused me of. Currently, he has righted my ship and now I personally feel that I am in a position to win. I would like to add that I am innocent, so justice will prevail. If you are guilty, then there is not much any attorney can do for you except get you a lesser sentence or sanction.

Veasna was amazing to work with. Throughout my entire process, she made me feel heard and important. If I had questions, she not only answered them but did research to provide me the best possible answer. If I had doubt, she allowed me time to work through the issues and did not make me feel pressured or rushed. She took the time to talk me through options to get the best outcome that suited me. She was patient and understanding from consultation to the conclusion, including invoicing. I was promptly provided updates as they were available so I didn’t have to wonder where things stood. One does not hope to have to hire an attorney but if a time comes again that one is needed, I will look to Veasna first.

I have gone to this man a couple of times and ready to go to him again. He is fair and gives great guidance. Listens to you. He has wisdom to offer, not just knowledge. His services are one of a kind. Better than our family member who is an attorney. He is also very respectful and cares about our feelings. He puts things in perspective. I always refer him. All of them said he was useful and they were all satisfied with results. I am very thankful to finally have found an attorney that I am confident in. I have met several other attorneys that were slimy and didn't care about a person welfare. I thank God for somebody like him!

I had absolutely no money & was desperate for legal help in my divorce. Ms. Urstadt agreed to help me out. She has done a great job representing me & was very supportive of me on a personal level as I dealt with changes in my life. With her support, I have grown stronger emotionally & mentally. With her encouragement as well as my family's, I returned to college & earned a degree. She has become more than an attorney--she is a friend. Thank you, Lynn. I owe you more than you know!

In 2015 I entered into a twenty month contract for the purchase of a horse. The final payment date of August 4, 2017. March 2017 due to financial issues with my business I was going to have to sell the horse, negotiate an extension of payment, or return the horse. I sent a letter to the owners laying out the possible options, as well as getting permission to sell. I was contacted by their attorney. It was pay the balance on or before August 2017, yes I could sell the horse under specific conditions. If not they would file suit for Breach of Contract. I was unable to get the horse sold. By July the finances changed an I would be able to make the payments but would need to extend the deadline. I contacted Mr. Kover for advice and his professional help. He explained the process of this type of lawsuit to me in layman’s terms and came up with several options. He then took over the negotiations and I am making the final payments with an extended deadline. Mr. Kover was professional and answered all my questions. He made himself available. I will be keeping him as my attorney for my professional as well as personal legal needs.

I wont lie, I was skeptical when I first met Ms Lyon. However, that was quickly alleviated. She know I was scared, needed help, and was lost. She kept me informed, all the way through my case. When I had a serious crisis she went out of her way to make sure I was ok. ( called my counselor to have them check on me) This young lady, is compassionate, intelligent, and willing to work with you. I am so grateful that I had her as my attorney, when came time for my hearing, she was there waiting for me, tried top comfort me as best she could, during cross examination she took note of something that we hadn't talked about, pointedly asked me about it, so the court was made aware of what was happening, and could happen. I just cant thank her enough for all her hard work. Excellent attorney.

She has been directly involved in addressing current leasehold issues; resolving easement issues with municipal and adjoining property owners; preparation and review of agency agreements, proposed purchase and sales documents; clearing title concerns and a host of other transactional issues required to prepare for ultimately sell the property. She routinely provides excellent work, timely, and at reasonable costs to the estate.

I was involved in a high-stakes land use issue regarding the Shorelines Management Act. We were litigating with a landlord employing a tony downtown Seattle law firm. For face saving reasons, the manager directing their law firm left the case on autopilot. Consequently, we were litigating against their lawyer who had every incentive (besides his client's interest) to pursue every imaginable legal cul de sac. They were outspending us almost 3 to 1 (this came out later). Even though we finally settled in the low six-figures, the final tally was pennies on the dollar for us and carnage on the other side. The settlement covered only a sliver of their legal fees and the litigation drew unwanted city attention to their property and the ways in which they were skirting the law. Peter was great to work with. I found him well connected, well regarded and generous with his knowledge and time. He was clever, always wrestling with the case in his mind, and always cognizant of the personal dimension of a case, either regarding the client or the opponent. In this case, as well as with counsel later in several other matters, I found him pragmatic or pugnacious as circumstances warranted. In some instances, we pressed the fight, in others, we walked away. In all cases, these seemed appropriate courses even in hindsight. When I have had further need for services, he is my first call.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
