HORRIBLE!!! On March 19, 2024, this attorney agreed to add a simple Codicil to our Last Will and Testament. "I'm happy to assist you with updating your estate planning. I can also prepare a Health Care Proxy, Living Will and Power of Attorney if desired" she boasted to us on that date. We informed her that time was of the essence..it needed to be done before June 4, 2024. "We have plenty of time" she responded with. On March 22, 2024, she wrote "I’ll review and will contact you to discuss any necessary modifications." It is now 5 weeks later, and this woman has gone AWOL. Not a single communication of any sort, nada, zip, zero! When you call her office, you get a recording stating "my preferred method of communication is through email." OK...we obliged. Result from that email 6 days ago as of this writing? Nada, zip, zero! So...now we call her office a SECOND time, but this time we left a voice message (since her "preferred method of communication" has obviously fallen on deaf ears). Result from our voicemail message 3 days ago as of this writing? Nada, zip, zero!! This woman doesn't even have the decency and common courtesy to return messages. Update! Today, FINALLY we received an email which reads: "Sorry, I was on vacation visiting my mom in Florida when you emailed last week. I have a lot going on right now and I know that you're anxious to proceed. I am referring you to......" Uh what? Are you kidding?! We've just lost 5 full weeks! We have NOTHING to show for our trust in this attorney. If you've got unlimited time and patience for a bait and switch attorney with zero communications skills to massage a document as important as a Last Will and Testament...then by all means, this is your attorney!!

Mr Barrraco has represented our family in legal matters for the last 20 years. We are most impressed with his knowledge of the legal system, his stunning integrity and his genuine concern for each client he represents. In each legal challenge we faced. Without exception Mr Barraco has been an advocate and a trusted legal representative.

First visit, he stated a good plan of action, however, he never kept me informed of any progress. I was doing all of the leg work and sending him the findings. Although requested of him call backs to advise if any progress, no calls were returned. Sent texts and emails. To my 40+ calls, he called 7 times. None of his calls provided any substantial updates. He was paid up front and never fulfilled any resolution, at all. He made empty promises and situation, one year later, is no different. I even was compelled to ask him "who he was representing"? Because it didn't appear to be me. He also provided me no paperwork when I requested it.

I contacted Ted with some questions regarding a divorce decree. He coached me through some tough decisions via email and phone. He also met with me and gave me some great advice that relieved much stress. He truly cares about his clients and will fight for them 110%. I will def recommend him and will be using him in the future!

Mr. Shanahan did a superior job representing me during my attempt at receiving disability through Social Security. After a long drawn out process he succeeded in proving to the judge that I was unable to work after having TBI related to a Brain Tumor. He and his Paralegal Michelle Gallagher worked very hard and were absolutely conscious of my situation and treated me with respect and concern. And he won my case for me!!!

Bill helped us immensely through the purchase of our first home. He was professional, friendly, and overall a great guy. We ran into a problem during the transaction, and Bill was all over it, ensuring that was came out on top. He was available when we called and very helpful in easing our anxiety. Would greatly recommend Mr. Creary for anyone purchasing a new home!

Creary's office was recently hired by us for selling our house. The whole experience was really bad, and it was the worst part of the entire process. First of all, he only contacted us once before we decided to hire him, as soon as we hired him, he never returned our calls, nor any emails. The staff in his office were very slow too, in most of the cases, we had to call and left two or three voice messages in order to get their responses. Second, he just didn't do his job. Our buyers for some reason delayed the closing date, and we urged his office to find out the reason and push the other party to close as soon as possible. But he never urged them, and didn't notify us any of the progress. We have moved before the closing date, so we were completely blocked of any information of the progress. Third, he was first referred by our agent from Nothnagle, and we were told the fee would be $400, but at the end, they charged $450 without any explanation. Since the original number wasn't written in any documents, we were unable to prove it was $400. $50 isn't a whole lot of money, but it definitely shows how dishonest they are. It seems Nothnagle would get some commission back by referring him, but his performance just hurts the reputation of Nothnagle.

Asked this firm to aid in a fraudulent deed issue. They literally billed me not once, but twice ! before making any progress what so ever. I had them send a simple "threat" letter to begin the run of the mill process of so called legal action. The letter was nothing short of embarrassment and the person receiving the letter must have literally laughed out loud. I know I did. I quickly replied saying the letter is inaccurate and that I'd be glad to answer any questions , but the letter was sent anyway in a rush and I was ignored. It's funny to how I was quickly billed for the mistake. But questions go unanswered for a week. Obviously did not listen or care about my issue, Just wanted the money for Nothing. When I foolishly asked the next steps of the process via email..even though my gut told me to run already , i was ignored for a week and guess what? surprise! I received another bill in the mail for those emails I sent. The balls on some of these lawyers. Yet another example of why you should never pay anyone up front. I just wasted hundreds of dollars for a bogus letter and 2 questions that went unanswered. If that's not bad enough , a child could have wrote the letter 100 times better or had AI do it in seconds. For free . Imagine hiring a plumber and you come home and he's tearing the roof off...does he get paid? Thankfully AI will cut out the use for all lawyer's and the paperwork in the future, 4 of 4 lawyers I've used in my life so far have been absolutely worthless money grabs. It's amazing how a computer made a wonderful argument and letter in seconds. Choose wisely

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
