If you are considering hiring C.J. Graves as your lawyer, I’d like to share my troubling experience working with him on a parenting plan modification which would result in a child support modification. Now, keep in mind, I have sole legal custody of my son.
Unfortunately, C.J. satisfied all of the opposing party's requests for the provisions in the new supplemental judgement. Nothing we discussed and initially agreed between parties when we “settled” out of court was included in the judgement, except for the 50/50 that I agreed to. The opposing party submitted the judgement that they drafted as final. C.J. submitted the response which was disregarded by Judge Bailey and he signed the opposing parties draft as final. This did not include ANY of the agreed upon/revised provisions that we discussed.
C.J. found out about this, called me and emailed me and said he wasn’t happy with the new judgment. However, he signed it without my knowledge and approval. From there, he was not able to discuss the damaging and inaccurate statements with opposing counsel. Not only did the child support modification not include the private health insurance I pay for my son, he also allowed the opposing party to include close to $800 in health care related expenses. He flat out told me he would get this fixed. That never happened.
He didn’t even get the other party to agree to edit the start date that the new parenting plan started. This resulted in a 3-month retro for the other party- which was a lie.
Either C.J. lacks knowledge of basic information on how to modify a child support payment and/or the ability to properly represent a client.
How are basic, fundamental, and true facts not incorporated in a new judgement when you have a lawyer representing you and these were specific things I had to ask him to change?
It appears that C.J. was very helpful in allowing the other party to achieve what they wanted. So, in essence, C.J. did not negotiate ANYTHING on my behalf. He did not do the work that I paid him for (negotiating and representing me) because the judgement says it all.
This resulted in an inaccurate monthly child support payment, and C.J. knew it.
There are additional factors that are influencing my rating and decision which I prefer to leave outside of this review. However, one of the most outstanding is his response time. I would not hear from him for 2 weeks, if not more. Part of his communications said that we shouldn’t “push it” or “upset them in any way,” if we wanted them to agree to consider changing anything (to the true information).
This was concerning to me because C.J. constantly told me that the opposing counsel didn’t call him back or reply to his emails. His inability to communicate with opposing counsel set me back and put me in a very compromised position.
C.J. was hired to negotiate and represent me. Unfortunately, I lost more than what rights I went in with, and he is very aware of this. At minimum to have the health care expense I pay for my son included in the child support calculator. I have always maintained health insurance for my son. Uninterrupted medical coverage.
The lack of timely communication left me wondering for weeks if anything was happening and or going to change. He also made deceiving promises about outcomes that were valid and realistic. I walked out losing and 100% unsatisfied. This was a clear-cut case, and C.J. did not do his job.
I truly felt neglected and that my case was not a priority for C.J. He was not able to achieve anything for me and the final judgement contained clauses that were never agreed upon. He was not able to negotiate anything for me. He even stated that in his conversations with opposing counsel, “We simply could not reach a resolution as to the issues”. Simply put, the other party was able to create a judgement that included everything they wanted (that was not agreed upon) and C.J. had no power to negotiate it.

C.J. Graves and Jaqueline Swanson-Graves are hands down the most thorough and highly educated team. They hold the bar of ethics extremely high and treated me with the upmost care and respect. It is a miracle that I found Mr. Ragland when I did. Andy prevented my daughter from being moved out of state after my divorce, a situation that was terrifying and confusing, and a challenge that he accepted with immediacy. I contacted Rhett Fraser for consultation to better understand options for legal actions about a situation with a yoga teacher who is also was marriage and family therapist at a prominent Kundalini Yoga studio in Portland. She preyed on and groomed a family member in yoga class and then convinced him to become a therapy client and then sexually abused him. While Rhett explained that our family had no legal recourse against her, he provided sound advice and direction about how to report her to the licensing board for disciplinary action. Almost a year and a half later, the board voted to revoke her license and she later admitted to all the charges and surrendered her license. While this has been traumatic and devastating to our family, Rhett was compassionate and supportive about the situation and I really appreciate his service to the community. We need more people like Rhett that can help families and victims that are devastated by these terrible people who prey and sexually abuse vulnerable people. Rhett Fraser is personable, friendly, courteous and is very easy to communicate with. Rhett is absolutely professional in every aspect, and can be quite comfortable to visit with in a one on one setting. My particular case was unique and had been presented in court on previous occasions by other councilors without success. Rhett conferred with me in great length in regards to my situation, and assured me that he had extensive prior experience on this type of subject matter. This review is specifically about attorney Kristen West McCall at the firm. As with many people, I have a love-hate relationship with attorneys and a definitely diverse view of the attorneys I have dealt with over the years; far more negative comments than positive as a rule. So it gives me singular pleasure to provide a very positive and laudatory review for Kristen. She is very good at her job; tenacious, innovative and thorough. I would not like to be on the opposing side when she represents you. She is also very much your advocate. Now that may seem obvious, but many attorneys consider you nothing more than a source to bill. I can earnestly say that is NOT the case here. Before there is even a conversation about money, she listens to the facts of the case, provides guidance and will be upfront as to whether she thinks it should be pursued. She is flexible and reasonable; two words that do NOT automatically apply to many counselors. She is proactive, answers her phone (or calls you back in a timely fashion if she is otherwise engaged) and most importantly, adds a large measure of common sense to her legal expertise. If you have occasion for a personal injury attorney, make sure Kristen McCall is on your short list. Incidentally, you will note on this site that my engagement with her was for a consultation. She was not hired (though she certainly would have been) because she explained after a thorough examination, that the case, which would be on contingency, would not lead to a positive outcome. She mentioned I could hire her to pursue it on an hourly fee basis, but discouraged me from doing so. My case in total was 11 months of medical provider treatment followed by a ridiculously low offer from the insurance company given I have sustained permanent injury. I contacted Adam, and entered a 24 month legal process - driven exclusively by my insurance company because an uninsured driver hit me.
I believe it to be worth it given settlement offer to me was 5 X over original offer. By my calculations, my settlement paid me about $100 per hour of my time and paid Adam about $700 per hour of his. Adam's services are totally worth it as I was not further taken advantage of by my insurance provider or the uninsured driver.
That said, the process of negotiation with my insurance company has been absolute crap, lengthy, dealing with a patronizing insurance company (and it's local legal team, which took 12 months to appoint), and generating a sense of powerlessness for me as my time was clearly ranked less valuable than the legal system. Adam could not have done better.

I was given Adam's name after a really awful car crash, and having never been in the situation wasn't really sure what to do. I contacted this firm for help after my boss fired me unfairly. Only the intake assistant contacted me and told me to meet with Ms Albies would cost $350 for a consultation and to fill out the BOLI questionaire on my own. I wanted advice on how to proceed with that for the best outcome, but having just been fired unfairly I did not have $350 to pay Ms. Albies. After this, I feel they are more concerned about money than helping me.
I do have a legitimate discrimination case here and truly need help from an attorney, not an assistant!
I can't honestly recommend someone who isn't willing to try to help me.

Ashlee is wonderful. I was involved in an age discrimination lawsuit. I was warned by many people that age discrimination is a very tough thing to prove. Ashlee decided to take on my case. We were up against a big corporation. There were times when I thought "What am I doing". Ashlee would look at me and say "They did you wrong". She worked extremely hard on my case. I was more than surprised that Avvo did NOT post my prior review although it was factual, specific. Especially since there are virtually no reviews on this attorney.
Specifically, I spent 60% of my entire cost of divorce with Albert and made virtually no tangible progress toward any of the steps required to actually get divorced. Except for initial meetings with opposing counsel that produced no progress at all, we never got close to discovery, settlement conferences, mediation or, of course, court. I had to leave the firm due to the lack of progress in relation to a very large fee, $550 an hour at the time I employed the firm. What's more, Albert insisted that it was "cost effective" to have his paralegal in every meeting with him, adding nearly $200 more an hour. It was not cost effective. I ultimately had to leave the firm due to very little progress in relation to a very large legal bill. The attorney I transferred to was a 5* rated Martindale and Hubbell attorney who took me all the way through divorce with a satisfactory result for 40% of the fee paid to Albert's firm with very little progress. When I left, I asked if I might employ Albert if necessary as a consultant in settlement negotiation having had no experience with the new law firm. Albert said, "no." I felt it was spiteful in relation to my leaving the firm. I said in my last review and will say again, Albert did boast about his accomplishments in my time with him and in a meeting with opposing counsel. I thought this inappropriate, especially on my dollar. Albert is certainly a competent attorney. I feel, however, that there are many attorneys as competent at a far lower fee and I actually believe I got a better outcome with the new firm at a dramatically lower cost. I say I believe I got a better outcome because my result was better than the result Albert was preparing me for.

After seeing personal injury commercials on TV, I decided to call one in my area. The downtown luxury office of Vick & Gutzler was my choice. I went in for a consultation, and they took my case immediately. I was badly injured and could not make ends meet but they assured me things would be okay. After the first meeting with Betty Gage, the companies owner, they had their receptionist tell me they couldn't prove negligence, so a jr. lawyer will help you file against workers comp !
I got roughly $5k for a lifetime of pain.

As I watched Dr. Andrew Baker (Chief Medical Examiner, Hennepin County) give his formidable testimony in the George Floyd case, it took me back to his steadfast testimony as an expert witness in our family's quest for TRUTH and JUSTICE for our matriarch.
The testimony and qualification of Dr. Baker and two other expert witnesses were unmatched and shown in our case long before his spotlight before the nation and world. All were found and picked by this experienced, professional, and skilled lawyer. Mr. Gutzler also was unmatched in our case.
The only problem for lawyers of this caliber...jury pools and panels. Ineptness and biases among jury pools and panels are serious things in the quest for justice. There is no tool(s) to measure those things in a courtroom. However, in spite of ineptitude and biases, TRUTH must be told and JUSTICE sought.
Thank you, again, to this experienced, professional, and skilled lawyer.
This public lauding is long overdue, although it has been done privately many times over.
