May 2010 excerpt from letter to MPD You had ten months to prepare a case to win on my false arrest for criminal trespass. It was clear from what happened in court that I wasn't worth the effort to win ..." Kasi thought I was guilty of the charges, she said " did you do it?" She came to court and didn't know the names of any of the witnesses, or even what happened. There was a long period where all they talked about was the garden hose. She made no effort on my behalf.. She was cold, unprepared and "dumptrucked" I had never been arrested before, was locked out of my apartment for good, was homeless and spent almost two years on bench probation because a slum lord went after me for being assertive about cleaning up mold on the property. Kasia didn't even know the name of the property manager that was behind my arrest. She failed me so completely, I would have done a better job.

I was referred to Sarah Winfield by the legal referral service but was screened by her paralegal Paola. Conversations with Paola were difficult and she was unable to accurately collect my information from the get-go. She misspelled my name and was unfriendly and unprofessional in all communications. My appointment was cancelled two hours beforehand. This is not how I would like to begin an attorney client relationship.

I sat with Andrew and cried my heart out over an injustice put upon me. His reply was a trespass warning sent to me by certified mail. This is no way to treat a customer. Looks like I have enough characters to tell you what happened and I think I will, it's just an incredible story. In 2010 an Umpqua banker sent me to a private lender because I didn't have good enough credit for a small loan. I was told that in one year to come back and I would have established credit and she would issue me a conventional loan. I came back in one year and the company I paid that pays the private lender does not report to Equifax so I was at square one and a shrug of the shoulders was all I got. Not "Here let us help you". It took me until 2015 to establish good credit. I invested the loan in source material immediately so I could pay the money back over a four year time span. So I wasn't able to return the loan from the private lender and have gotten caught in a very frustrating financial trap. Get this the loan is for 15% interest only I was advised that that wasn't too bad because I'd be issued a conventional loan and have credit and all would be ok. By now of course I know this was terrible advise and it would seem she should have a fiduciary duty as a banker to inform me, the customer who had never borrowed money before of the Equifax stuff. I never heard of them at that time did not have a credit card never had one, all of this the banker was apprised of. I would have done due diligence but was led to believe "just come back in a year with your payments and we'll set you right up." I asked for the promised loan in Feb. 2015 and was told no. I have paid 29K in interest alone trying to establish the credit rating they required. I went to Umpqua headquarters May 27th 2015 and told this to Andrew Ognall, mind you I am crying and carrying on, this has caused me a lot of grief, let me tell you. This is breach of contract pure and simple. There is an interview on You Tube with the CEO by Jeanne Bliss at the 4:12-4:55 he states he gives his permission to his bankers to make decisions. This banker gave me her word and when I could finally meet my end of the contract I was denied. I explained this to Andrew Ognall and today I am served with a trespass warning I declare this is no way to treat a loyal customer. I have written to the CEO 5 times this year, my first was begging for the promised loan, pretty good letters too and nothing, I asked for a meeting with him and not even a email. I would bet you that the minute I push submit they close my account. This is an incredible institution with a very cold hearted lawyer. I would not recommend Andrew Ognall if you are looking for tenderness and understanding.

Amanda will tell you she's a "damn good lawyer" (more than once). She's not interested in information, or answering questions- she has one goal and one focus- and that is to win. I suppose this is a good trait in a lawyer, as long as you can stomach her arrogance and rude behavior. She does not like to answer questions and the many assistants who come and go often lose paperwork or have no idea what is going on with your case. Be prepared to gather EVERYTHING and I mean EVERYTHING from your doctors, care providers, and case workers. Also, make sure you make a LOT of copies, because this law firm can't seem to retain the documents you will be providing. We delivered numerous documents by mail, certified mail and even in person. We went over the file page by page- in person and the night before the hearing, an assistant claimed they did not have the key doctor's contact information. Not only was this not true, it caused an enormous amount of stress, not to mention the cost of paying the doctor who ultimately was not allowed to testify, as the law firm didn't acquire the proper permission for her to attend, even though they had previously assured us they would. We caught them in several lies about our attorney's availability and what documents they had. I work in the adult court system- I have some understanding of proceedings and I've worked closely with attorneys most of my career. I have never been spoken to or treated so rudely as we were in this law office. I'm sorry to say it was too late to fire her and start over. While I feel we may still be able to win the case, I don't feel like this attorney's office has been any help in the prep process- in fact they have been an outright hindrance at times. For the amount of money they are going to walk away with, they really ought to be more respectful of their clients. If you only care about winning and don't mind being uninformed and treated like you're stupid- and if you don't mind doing all the legwork and building your own case and repeatedly sending them documents- then this just might be the law firm/lawyer for you.

This review is solely based of off the experience with follow up and initial conversation with intake to pursue a consultation with an attorney at this firm. After speaking with Kyle the office coordinator so called “Office Manager” KYLE last week about scheduling a consultation with one of the attorneys on a time sensitive issue I was told I would be contacted via email later that day with some dates and times available. With no response still as of today and several attempts to call in to try and schedule with no return calls back I can see why prior reviews with the same experience are apparent. More so I continued to try to make a consultation appointment yet again this morning and spoke with the receptionist who let me know KYLE was the only one who could schedule the consultation and he was unavailable. It wasn’t until informed the receptionist of my frustration and experience with no follow up from KYLE and I wanted to speak with his higher up that he was instantly available. He reassured me he had emailed me yesterday from our first initial conversation a week a go and deemed himself that should have sufficed in lieu of not returning any calls prior that week with my time sensitive issue. After I let him know of his poorly conducted attempt to contact me back he then let me know non of the attorney’s were available or could take my case. His exact words were “no one is available until after the new year”. I understand completely that the firm has many cases as they came highly recommended but as a smaller firm it should not take over a week to get a response from a schedule coordinator to let a possible future client that all the attorney’s are unavailable until after New Years. Really?? After calling KYLE on his lack there of his demeanor completely changed and I asked to be re routed to the front desk. Instead of being professional he asked why and why did I need to talk to the receptionist. I let him know that I wasn’t going to continue the conversation with him and would like to speak with the front desk. This is when he informed me that he was the Office Manager and anything that needed to be left with the front desk he could be made aware of. Interesting how if you a not even a client but a prospective and that’s how you are treated then how actual clients are treated. All in all I believe this was a way letting me know to dodge this firm like a bullet.

I found Tara Costanzo to quite rude and unprofessional when we had are consultation. She was very disrespectful of my mother and youngest sister. Seemed to me she has a problem with power dynamics. She wanted to be clear she was the alpha in the room. She was very short and snarky. In typical lawyer fashion, she first acted very bubbly and accommodating. While later showing her true colors after we had met and her time clock was running. With an attitude like that she should be working at Starbucks NOT at a law firm.

We used this lawyer because another lawyer referred him for real estate issues. Unfortunately, as we found out, he has zero knowledge on real estate law. Even though we hired him and paid him and would’ve cost us more money to change lawyers, we ended up going with a different lawyer due to his lack of knowledge and incompetence.

I hired Lissa to assist me with a very painful divorce promoted by domestic violence. I wanted a female attorney and thought that Lissa would be an important advocate. I spent almost $50,000 on lawyer fees just for her to drop me as a client a month before our court hearing, in the middle of summer when no one was available to step in and take over. She offered no reason for the sudden drop and I ended up Iosing over $200,000 because I was left without a trial lawyer at the eleventh hour after paying her for nearly a year. During our time together, Lissa was unprofessional, woefully underprepared for our temporary court hearing, had no eye for detail and had a very short temper. Every document I received from her was chalk full of mistakes, she would frequently lose her temper and start yelling at me and her staff, and arrived to our temporary court hearing with little preparation. She appears to take on far too many clients at once, leaving her stressed, over worked and underprepared to deliver results. But she'll certainly take your money. Lissa Kaufman was the absolute biggest mistake I made during my divorce. I hope others chose more wisely.

He shared information with my neighbor without my permission and didn't charge her When I asked about it he said it would help me get a better settlement which it didn't. He used my fees to advise her. He didn't like me because he discovered I was conservative and supported the 2nd amendment. I should have fired him but was having serious issues with my wife's health at the time and couldn't spend the effort. My error. I was referred to his firm because it was supposed to be very good with boundary disputes, but not to him specifically.

The website states his practice, but his assistant Lisa who says she's worked for him for 15 years says he doesn't handle a hospital negligence case. I'm baffled. No consultation - just "no". Usually attorneys ask their office assistants to intake info, then the attorney reviews and gives a response. She decides. And her decision is not according to what the website offers. Couldn't get a consultation to even ask for a referral.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
