During the most stressful time of my life to date, my attorney, Jennifer Sinclair Simpkins was nothing short of amazing! She listened to me, guided me through every step of the process, & she promptly returned my emails. I had so many questions that she patiently answered. Thank you, Jennifer for making this as painless as possible. Thank you for your professionalism and for fighting for me!

As someone who unfortunately has had to deal with 4-5 lawyers in the few years this was by far my absolute worst experience with any attorney/firm. Can’t recommend enough to get a different consult and get better advice, would never work with them again. The strategy here seems to be to take clients to court and to drag things out as long as possible to wrack up billable hours. From this from I paid over $10k for a divorce case that almost went to trial, until the firm was late on giving me needed disclosures to complete - when I changed attorneys almost instantly got the case out of court and saved a ton of money and got what I wanted. Attorneys here couldn’t seem to care less, they are arrogant and will give you bad informaron to keep your case going to trial. Total waste and huge regret wasting any time and money here.

Several years ago, I needed to retain a lawyer. After a lot of research and interviews, I decided to go with Raleigh Divorce Law Firm and Katelyn Hodges as my attorney. Katelyn has been fantastic, and she was exactly what I needed over the years that I have retained her. Things haven't always gone my way with the multiple lawsuits and tumultuous experiences over the years, but with her keen legal knowledge, her ability to put forward logical arguments, and to capitalize on key pieces of information, she has been there when it was most important to achieve the desired end state.  Our very candid conversations about things have been helpful to me to make better decisions about legal issues and best support my family. I highly recommend Katelyn, and I am happy to call her a friend.

I can not say enough great things about Susan and Sandlin Law Firm. I was referred to this firm when I moved here in 2016 while going through an ugly divorce. I have used Susan for the past 7 years and have referred her to friends that need a knowledgeable attorney who will have their back. Susan listens to the needs of her clients and truly advocates for them. I was (and still am) navigating through all the “yuck” of divorce and Co-parenting and because of Susan, I feel supported. I would not want anyone else to fight for me. Susan genuinely cares for her clients!

I firstly need to thank God for sparing my life and my husband life on 3/15/24 it could have been worse for our families Thank You Almighty. As I laid in the hospital in pain worrying about what to do next I definitely knew that I wouldn’t be able to fix this situation over night I knew I was gonna be out of work I have 4 children that needed me around to be there for them and provide for them daily as a Mother should I hesitated at first about calling any lawyer that popped up on google it just so happened that Tatum&Atkinson was first I gave them a call and not once did they stall my phone call or say my case wasn’t worth looking into This law firm went to work for me all the way to the top and they called and updated me periodically and not once did I have to make a move they did err thang for me and I couldn’t believe it like it’s real they are so quick and know exactly how to get you what you deserve in your time of need and I just want to Thank each and every person at Tatum & Atkinson for the support and dedication you all be blessed and Thank You a million times ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

I called the Asheville branch to ask about a free consult because I live outside of NC, but my recently deceased sister lived in NC. Bonnie answered my call and I'm so sorry she did. I hung up feeling frustrated and disrespected. She was rude and not very helpful at all. Her attitude was quite condescending and very unprofessional. She should be able to ask strategic questions to gain an understanding of my needs, but instead she was curt, snooty and too busy trying to get me off the phone to be able to understand WHY I was calling. It was like pulling teeth, and I was getting no where with her, so I simply asked her name, thanked her, and hung up. She rattled off some title after her name, but at this point I had tuned her out, because it didn't matter who she was. I would NEVER do business with them and WOULD NOT recommend them to anyone. I was able to find another attorney in NC, Kirschbaum, Nanney, Keenan & Griffin and they were awesome! They were kind, friendly and most of all professional. They asked the right questions to make sure they were the right 'type' of attorney I needed. They were truly the professionals I needed to talk to. I simply wanted to share MY experience with this practice and the end result.

When planning your estate, it can be stressful. When working with Strauss Attorney PLLC, there was absolutely no stress at all. The interaction with the firm was pleasant and easy to work with. Christie kept in constant contact with me and made sure I was aware of my appointments and what was needed. Jennifer and Kat were an absolute joy to work with. Both are knowledgeable and were very patient with all of my questions. They have extraordinary customer service. I plan to use this firm for all of my legal needs.

I had a closing where I sold a house and property where the buyer's agent wanted to use Midtown Law in Raleigh. I had no issues and in the interest of getting the deal done agreed. There were really no issues at closing other than receiving the funds just before close of business in a Friday but oh well. The problem arose when I received the property tax bill for that parcel 5 months after the closing date. I checked my closing documents and verified the funds were in fact withheld from my disbursement so I contacted the tax office. The tax office informed me to contact the closing attorney which was Midtown Law. I placed a call and was instructed there was NO WAY TO CONTACT the person I needed to see except email. I asked several times to speak with an officer of the corporation, the attorney that did the closing or anyone who could help me with no help from the attendant. I got the email and then promptly sent the property address as well as described the problem at hand and asked the person to call me to advise how to clear this up? I received an email telling me it was the new owners responsibility to pay the taxes and pretty much they were out of the loop. It seems they didn't care to help resolve the situation. I don't know how the new owners would even know they owe the taxes or the amount they owe? Midtown Law provided no way to contact the present owners even though they had to have that information in order to complete the closing. I guess it falls on me to do the job I paid them to do in the first place. I would not recommend this law firm . I guess if everything turns out right you'll have no problem but if you ever need to contact them to resolve an issue good luck. I'd be embarrassed if I were an associate.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
