Heidi Bloom (family law @ Wyrick Robbins) made me reschedule a hearing in Durham Co in late 2018 because she had a previous engagement. But she lied and said it was because all the judges in Durham are 'numbskulls' and wouldn't understand my UCCJEA case. She said we needed to file in Wake County where, I later found out, her husband is a judge! We lost because Heidi left out BOTH court orders that proved our case! It was such a blatant omission, I have to wonder if she did it on purpose. She also never bothered to show up to the hearing I rescheduled to accommodate HER schedule, and sent a junior attorney without obtaining my consent to do so. After she lost my case, she told me she never had the court order in question and tried to extort $700 to "call in some favors" to get it! I showed her proof that she'd had the documents for six months, and she responded that she "couldn't be expected to read everything!". Then she delayed my appeal until the last minute and told me I'd need to pay her $10,500 to proceed to correct HER negligence! My appeal ended up being handled pro bono by DVLeap, an anti domestic violence charity. Sadly, I lost the case there, too, because I couldn't bring up the court order Heidi neglected to include! Heidi is a very dishonest attorney. She has caused my family over four years of torment cleaning up her negligent mess. She also neglected to disclose that she's Facebook friends with BOTH lawyers for the opposing side. Extremely dishonest human. Beware. Check out AVVO for other bad reviews from her past clients. I advise this because I wish I'd known how destructive hiring her would be to my family. By the way, when I brought all of this to the attention of Wyrick Robbins' general counsel, they threatened to sue me! PLEASE AVOID THESE PEOPLE.

I have worked with John for my citizenship and family petitions and also two sponsorships. My experience is that John is direct and matter-of-fact. The fees are easy to understand and they didn't change after beginning each process. John always returned my messages and he contacted me about updates. He also explained about back logs. It was frustrating but I know we were in good hands.

I retained Stacey Phipps to represent me in a personal injury matter. Even though I am also an attorney, I do not practice personal injury law and knew that I needed an attorney with specialized expertise. Ms. Phipps was highly recommended to me by fellow attorneys who were familiar with Ms. Phipps excellent work. I was thoroughly impressed with Ms. Phipps and her extensive knowledge of personal injury law. I was even more impressed with her communication skills. Attorneys are often criticized for failing to promptly communicate with clients. Ms. Phipps was always accessible, and was especially good at providing me with information and updates on a timely basis. Perhaps most importantly, Ms. Phipps was honest and forthright about what she could and could not achieve for me. I appreciated her careful and thorough analysis of the legal issues and the manner in which she presented the various options as to how we might proceed in order to maximize my recovery. I always felt that Ms. Phipps was putting my interest ahead of any other considerations, including her own financial gain. Stacey Phipps is a capable, compassionate and ethical attorney. I am pleased to give her my highest recommendation in the hope that it will help potential clients feel confident that Ms. Phipps will be an effective advocate for their legal interests.

I got a will, power of attorney, healthcare power of attorney and advanced directive/living will prepared by Stacey. Upon meeting her, she was very professional and friendly. The documents were prepared timely and everything was conveniently done in her downtown office. The whole experience from start to finish gave me a sense of peace and I felt really good about choosing her as my attorney. I would definitely recommend her to anyone who is looking to create a will.

My husband and I began to use this firm for his immigration process, and liked her at first. However, prices were changed (around 1K more) AFTER we had signed contracts and made an agreement! I find this unethical and we are now looking for someone else, even though this process is stressful and we would pay anything to make it happen.

Anybody who is facing eviction should in my personal opinion HOPE to be as lucky as we were that their landlord/landlady hires Brian J. Register from this firm. I would love to congratulate Brian J. Register, Esq in my personal opinion for the incompetent way that he handled his client/my ex landlady's eviction case against our family. First of all, it would of been prudent to wait until AFTER the month that we had just paid rent was OVER before filing for the eviction. First eviction paperwork was filed on June 30 when we had already paid rent for that month. News flash you can't file an eviction when the tenant has paid rent for that month and the landlady had accepted the rent payment. Secondly when filing for an eviction, the tenants should be given the proper notice and be told to vacate the correct address. As a lawyer, the notice to vacate being mailed to the correct address on Kinton Drive but the letter stating that the tenant should move out of an address that they've never lived at in other words the existing landlady's address on Old Stage Road than yes that's incompetence. Those are the 2 major times that Brian J. Register, Esq messed up in the eviction cases against us. We're glad to have this case behind us and never deal with any of the opposing parties ever again. By the way, if the person reading this is facing eviction, I'd highly suggest reading up on Google for the simple steps that the eviction process SHOULD include. Also look up your rights as a tenant in North Carolina. For example, your landlord/landlady needs to give you 24 hour notice before coming into your home for an inspection etc. Oh another thing it's illegal for your landlady/landlord to use a drone to picture/video the property that you are renting from your landlord/landlady. You have the 4th amendment right to be secure in your property and papers from illegal seizures that includes from your landlord/landlady.

Good luck EVER hearing from James Vann or his assistant Kaitlin. My attorney has reached out to him via phone call, voice mail, email, FedEx, and even dropping into the office and yet we have received nothing but "out of the office" messages in return. We were told he had a completed document just sitting on his desk ready to sign in March and we've yet to receive a copy. It's two days from August. Completely unprofessional. Would not recommend anyone use Vann as your attorney, even if it was offered free!

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
