I first called Michael from my elderly mother's hospital room. She experienced a horrific, on the job injury and was facing months of medical treatment and many more additional surgeries with a questionable outcome. He actually recommended I didn't need an attorney at that time as her needs were being met and it would not add value. Fast forward a year later and we are now in final settlement negotiations. We are overwhelmed with the process and felt we needed advice and counsel. He was generous with his time with me even though he knew we couldn't hire him because of conflict of interest issues. He provided invaluable information about the forms and filings we had ahead of us and referred us to an appropriate attorney to assist us. I will always remember is kind, compassionate and patient manner during a very difficult chapter in our family history.

Mr. Bowens cares more about his clients than most people can imagine. He is my educational attorney for my special needs child and has fought hard for him to receive the proper education as afforded by state and federal law. He is truly an advocate for children, specifically special needs children.

He was personable, listened to me and answered any questions I had. Seemed very knowledgeable. Very. Just yesterday he almost pulled off a literal miracle, but as things go, the state didn't know what they were talking about. He was also doing my case as a public defender (thank god). While waiting to hear from the DA, with her waiting to hear from the arresting officer, he would check on me ever 5-10 minutes. From my experience yesterday, he was terrific. It was a lock that I was about to do 120 days, and he someone almost got me off

Jim Johnson represented me in a dog bite case. He went above and beyond in working with me, bringing my case to a conclusion that exceeded my expectations. He also supported my desire to help stop others from being attacked by the dog. He was unfailingly kind and extremely professional. I strongly recommend Jim and would definitely hire him again if needed.

I asked three friends (attorneys, people who purchase a lot of real estate, etc.) which attorney I should use and all separately pointed me to Elizabeth Harrison. I had an odd situation and Elizabeth deftly and quickly handled all of it. She was quick to respond, knowledgeable, and gave good advice to keep me on track.

Although she was a relatively new attorney when we first worked together, it was hard to tell based upon her professionalism. If she did not know the answer to my questions, she would research the topic and then provide me a thorough answer. Ms. Thompson was very straightforward and hardworking, hate that I am no longer able to work with based upon her new position.

Mrs Springsteen started representing my immigration case in 2015. She has continued to work on my case, as it has been extremely complicated. She has always been available when I have needed her, whether it is to speak about my case, or just offer support/advise. She is extremely professional, prompt and will do absolutely anything in her power to help. My experience with her has been an absolute pleasure.

Continued trespass, harassment and property damage by a neighbor ultimately escalated to a point of confrontation in which I was assaulted. In response, I summoned local police and brought an assault charge against the offender. In retaliation, the neighbor later made false claims & brought a baseless charge against me. The ensuing case caused substantial anxiety over the potential consequences as they would affect me legally, socially & financially. Hiring attorney Kevin Boxberger was the best decision that I could have made. His professional confidence and obvious legal acumen quickly put me at ease. Mr. Boxberger reliably returned my calls, patiently answered all of my questions, articulated thoughtful legal strategies, and always kept me apprised of any progress made in my case. Kevin (and his top-notch staff) remained self-motivated throughout and outworked the opposition in every manner. I'm eternally grateful to Kevin and his staff for managing the optimal legal result: having my charge dismissed outright!

I had a single car accident and was taken to the hospital. I didn't even know they took my blood for an alcohol test. It came back over the legal limit. The first lawyer I spoke to told me I had no defense since it was a single car crash and alcohol was in my blood. Greg disagreed. He did a great job questioning the officer and got a NOT GUILTY!

I have worked with several lawyers over the years for various professional and personal needs. Aneta was the most responsive lawyer which I have experienced. Her responsiveness to phone calls and emails was amazing! She goes the extra mile to give the best defense possible and to negotiate the most advantageous conditions possible. I would highly recommend her to any and all persons in need of an extraordinary defense attorney and immigration purposes.

Ross is very professional, knowledgeable, and friendly. I was at first very apprehensive, but that went away quickly. He had handled similar situations before and explained exactly what to expect. He encouraged any questions and responded clearly and quickly when I asked them. He was interested in my overall goal and made very specific suggestions on how to reach them. Even so, he always made time to explain the pros and cons of each decision. I'd work with Ross again in a heartbeat.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
