I would give 0- if I could. Do your self a favor and run from this nightmare attorney. Me and my ex husband had agreed to are division of are assets and I related to Swartz that we dint want to battle in court. We wanted the divorce done in timely manner. He told me that the divorce would take about 6 months to 1 year at the longest. He drugged his feet kept going to court for what I don’t know and send me bills. I gave him the benefit of the doubt thinking he was very busy for 1 1/2 year. Paid him over $7,000 thousand up to that time. According to him I still owe him another $7,000 thousand plus for a uncontested divorce. I would like to donate the money that he unjustly charging me to the poor if I can find way. I stopped paying him after the 1 1/2 year to force him to move on with my divorce. That dint happen. I pleaded and cried for him to finish what I hired him to do so that I would move on with my life. He ignored me time and time over. I lessened about his trips to Europe several times and got charged for it. I brought it to his assistants attention but hi never credited me. Never responded to many of my emails and my concerns. He cost me a lot of money because he refused to withdraw from my case. I had to file petition to the court to have him removed from my case. I had to call Swartz to get him to respond to my ex husbands attorney over and over. My husbands attorney told my ex husband that when the judge asked why this divorce was taking so long Swartz told the judge that it was my fault. I was very angry to say the least. My ex husband knows the truth and he told me about it. This attorney is de honest. My ex husbands attorney had to finish what I paid Swartz to do. Swartz found out that my ex husband was sick and his assistant told me that they were hoping my ex husband would die before all was over with. I was in shock when she said that. I wish I new to had recorded her. There has been several clients of his that reported him to the State Bar including me and I don’t understand why the State Bar doesn’t do nothing.

I am so confused by the people who left bad reviews for this man..my experience with Mr Swartz was very professional, intelligent and capable. I was supporting myself and my 3 kids while I attended law school in Sacramento. I knew we would get along when he told me that I could have chosen a better law school...lol...I explained the situation and he immediately took care of all necessary procedures and completed my case in a manner that both was polite but aggressive at the same time. My ex-husband insisted that because I was attending law school I could not care for our children properly. Mr Swartz set up mediation, had surprise welfare visits for my children and then proceeded to take this case to the quickest custody trial I have ever witnessed. He put all investigators and government officials involved on the stand as well as expert witnesses. In proving that not only were my children taken care of but I maintained a 3.9 grade point average while doing so. I gave him a lot of dirt and ammunition to use against my ex and he assured me this case would be won on facts and merit alone and we would never have to stoop to such a level. I honestly couldn't have been more impressed. I now know that when my children might look up this case in the future they will see I never bashed their father and can hold my head high..Thank you Mr Swartz for a job well done with dignity, class and most of all having our children's best interest at heart.

I have to hire another attorney to clean up the legal mess Swartz left me in. Once I gave over my deposit, it became very clear Swartz was incapable of helping me with my Divorce. My Ex used attorney who is less than half the cost of Swartz, and was 110% more effective in court. Swartz refused to finish the tasks he was hired to do. Do yourself a favor and find anyone else!!!

I have spoken to PI's before. This is the first unprofessional one though. This guy can't take a hint. Stop calling dude. Call my attorney. You do not get to call me 7 times in a row and lock up my phone line. It appears he doesn't understand that word "NO." Here's the deal dude. If you have questions about me or for me, you can submit them in writing. If you have questions about other people I might know, submit them in writing. I need something to use as a fire starter.

Sean answered my calls or called me back right away. I had a Spousal support case where my ex-husband was receiving support while living with his girlfriend before the divorce was final. I found Sean by searching for P I 'so in the area where he lived. I live a long distance away. Sean not only investigated my case, his report convinced the judge to terminate the support order, but also he was very encouraging to me when we talked. He was my cheerleader. I needed that. I had had 2 different attorneys, neither of whom were encouraging at all. They did produce some useful documents and guidance through the court system for a total of $7000. After letting the 2nd one go, I had the bright idea to hire a private investigator and Sean was great. He helped me through my pro-per trial. I highly recommend him when you need someone with experience.

Filed bankruptcy with him and they filed too soon and screwed us up. Now we owe the IRS more with penalties an interest. His office girl did all the work and he never checked it out to make sure it was correct and now we are messed up with the IRS.

I hired Mr. Ogilvie to represent me in a family law case and a Civil lawsuit. Basically I ended up representing myself because Mr. Ogilvie didn't take the time. So much so that he allowed the other sides attorney, Mike Darlington, to file fraudulent documents for his client and Mr. Ogilvie signed off on them, obviously because he either never bothered to read them or didn't care or both. He appeared in court for me only long enough to postpone hearings and trial until we finally settled and never had a trial. The settlement was written by me and a different attorney, not Ogilvie and not the opposing sides attorney, Mike Darlington. Mr. Ogilvie is a nice man but I think overwhelmed and perhaps past his prime. I would love my money back but too much trouble to take the time to pursue at this point. I would never hire him again or recommend him to anyone who actually wants an attorney who cares and will work for them. You will be very disappointed with Mr. Ogilvie.

Mr. Ogilvie did not present any of the evidence that I researched and presented him with. He made no attempt to research any of the evidence on his own eg. wifes earnings. Made no objections did not stand up for me when the judge said she did not believe I couldn't hear. The whole proceding was a kangaroo court in which opposite council presented false "evidence" concerning my income. It goes on and on

After consultation was told to call back as soon as I received divorce papers from my spouse. When I called back one week later, after being served, I was told that they weren't accepting any clients. This has left me in a bind. Now I'm currently searching for a new attorney so that I can file my response within the 30 day timeframe. Would not recommend...

Don't hire this lawyer! I retained him to fight the executor of my mother's will. He will make promises and tell you he can do things he has no intention of doing. No legal advice here. You know you're in trouble when he stops returning phone calls.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
