An extra star because some of the workers in the office are good. But it was an all around poor experience working with Dollinger. Poor communication, lots of delays. And the cherry on top was they had no keys for the house we purchased. It was a mess. Find someone else if you have a choice.

Ed took forever to file on my behalf, and when he did he mishandled the paperwork. This led to yet another delay in my Divorce. I'm now trying to get formal paperwork on my divorce (because he never got me my official copies) and I find that he has entered erronous birthdates, transposed "defendant" and "plaintiff" to the point my house may be in danger. I'm now lost and don't know what to do

I hired Mr. Bambury to apply for Social Security Disability. It took 3 years. I only met him at the end of the process when I appealed the initial Denial. He was exceptionally rude and refused to sit near me and did not talk to me at all, not even about my case. He did not contribute with my video hearing with the judge. I feel like a fool for trusting this person, especially since I have a Law Degree from a different state. His handling of my case was unacceptable and I paid the price for not doing my due diligence in researching NY State Law and blindly trusting him and his office staff.

My husband and I went in because the payment of 1414.00 with CCCS was to high hoping a bankruptcy would help. Kevin reviewed our paperwork he advised us chapter 13 would be about 900.00 a month knowing Bob had worked overtime the first 3 months of the yr he stated the payment could be SLIGHTLY HIGHER we should wait about 4 mths and my husb should not work the overtime the courts look at the last 6 months of bank statements. So with knowing this we gave him a retainer of $1000 only to to find out that the payment went up to 867/2 wks the courts go back a yr. We would never had gone this way knowing that the payment is only a few dollars lower, we would have seekked other options. He also told us to stop paying the credit cards, keep the car payment and mortgages current. Now we are not only behind in payments that we would have tried to make arrangements for with Bobs overtime we atre out the retainer fee.

I retained Stephen Jacobstein July of 2016 and by December he had gone through all of my retainer and only started discovery. It was June of 2017 and he had finally entered into discussion about a settlement with the opposing attorney. It had taken him almost a year just to get the release of a few personal items (cloths, jacket, boots, pictures, etc..). I ran out of money and he bailed on me and left me to finish the negotiation with opposing council. He was suppose to be a very good lawyer as advertised (Best lawyer, Super lawyer), however, he did minimal work and minimal quality, could have used a more economical lawyer and probably moved faster and more effective. I had no children and basic assets, should not have been difficult or time consuming. I would recommend someone more enthusiastic about your case and who has passed the bar a little more recent.

Mr Jacobstein came highly recommended but his performance was less than stellar. After one year and a depletion of 65K, I was no closer to a resolution. I fired him the next court appearance. He called me often to see how I was doing, and the next monthly statement would reflect those nice calls at his hourly rate. He saw resources and went after them. He was totally unprepared for the deposition and had me come in early to help organize for it. His office was a total mess and I would have to declutter the chair and part of the desk in order to meet with him. He refused to discuss my case with my wealth manager, even after I did a release. He had a CPA review my case and orally they came to a conclusion - - both refused to put in writing what advice was given, That was another 3500.00 plus Mr Jacobstein's fee. Mr Jacobstein refused to have a well respected gentleman ( knowledgable in what my case involved) from the Corporate community meet with him at his office because his secretary and her husband did not like him.( He had discovered ethical issues with her husband's law practice.) Every time I called and mentioned said person and his advice for the case, I had to refer to him as my "brother" as to not offend/worry his secretary. I repeated asked him to write me a will since the case was lingering and he always said he would and never did. I ultimately wrote my own. Mr Jacobstein is to be avoided at all costs. Trust me when I say he was almost worse to deal with than my husband of 30 years. This is a small community so I have let my case be resolved before writing this review.

Eftihia is the worst lawyer that I could’ve ever imagined getting in a family law case. She showed no concern about the well being of my children. Instead she worked hard to satisfy the other side. She didn’t read over any details to my custody order in details and she didn’t provide any in depth explanations regarding the custody order’s stipulations. As a result my children have suffered tremendously and are still suffering today. Eftihia should be ashamed of herself. She wouldn’t want the same for her own son. She rushed through my case and didn’t explain any details. Horrible experience.

I expected Chris to speak for me when i could not. He failed at this. He was very slow to act, in fact he had to file for an extention to bring the suit as he drug his feet for literally 3 plus years. Had I not been so incapacitated I would have been more on top of him, but this is why i needed him, I was not at my best. He seemed very tenatious at the inception of our lawyer client relationship but that wained. He did very little with me to prepare for the trial and did not tell me about the defendants witnesses that were to be called until the day before the trial. He kept me in the dark. His performance in court can only be as good as his preparation, and that is where he failed. He did not have all the facts. I would not recommend him!

I hired James Grossman in October of 2003. I was referred to him because of his expertise in real estate. I was experiencing severe nuisance water issues related to a development that went in behind me on a hill. I came to learn of the problem only upon visiting my healthcare provider. While Mr. Grossman was retained I was forced to leave my home due the toxic mold. Mr. Grossman attempted to backdate my claim saying it was pointless to pursue as my neighbor was also made ill. Yet he appeared to misinterpret this fact because it was only after I had been alerted by my doctor that I came to realize my neighbor's plight. ( He subsequently sold his property and now a second family has become ill). Mr. Grossman never filed any legal paperwork on my behalf essentially almost allowing my claim to lapse. What I never understood is that Mr. Grossman is at heart a defense attorney and never had any interest in properly defending me. Later he teamed up with an insurance defense lawyer who represents the Town who improperly permitted this development in. My advice is to ask this important question of your council are you a Plaintiff's attorney or are you an attorney who represents or defends clients.

This so called attorney was a complete nightmare. She was the closing attorney assigned to our new home. She was absolutely and completely irresponsible and took no responsibility consulting or communicating with us as the days approached to our closing. She avoided questions that we had and would only respond by email but never addressing the questions we had. Always sidestepping. She doesn't want to take time to explain the multiple and padded charges in the closing documents. She also was very arrogant, nasty and condescending with her responses. I have no idea how or why she is an attorney and can get away with treating her clients like crap. No responsibility or accountability

I hired Donald Mark Thompson in Oct, 2009. He charged me $15,000 cash up front for a simple marijuana charge that I was entitled by law to go through drug court. I had legally borrowed money from my home equity loan and proved that to him with every bank transaction I ever made with my credit union within the first month 8 years ago this Oct. The police stole from my home and bank account over $25,000. My co defendant spent half as much money and had several Class B felonies that should have not qualified him for drug court. Specifically, he was charged with a large quantity of heroin, methadone, morphine and several other non prescribed class B felonies, and 140 marijuana plants growing in his house. I ended up completing drug court after 1.5 years. I ended up with a conviction and my co defendant got a sealed record. That was his third conviction. 2 in NYS and one in NJ. All sealed and he is now earning over $100,000 per year legally as a professional engineer. I am disabled and live on a tiny SSDI check after being run over on my motorcycle by a drunk driver. They did not take a penny from him. Mr. Thompson for 8 years has been dragging his feet and committed Mal Practice against me. He was thrown out of the Federal court in Rochester NY and yesterday I had an 8 minute hearing in NYC appeals court. He promised to call me after the meeting but did not keep his word. Would you want an attorney like that working for you? I am now going to retain a Mal Practice attorney from a bigger city who says I have a very strong case against him. I have offered to mitigate damages several times, asked for his Insurance carrier and policy. He refused. I asked if the partners are aware of his incompetence and if they would like to settle without insurance or court. Today I left messages for his partners so that they are aware of this nonsense wasting 8 years without a single Federal court appearance. In the beginning he told me he does a lot of work in the Federal court and that was why he was charging twice the going rate. He said the police had to lie to get a search warrant since I was nowhere's near my house when arrested. He calls himself a deep thinker. I think differently. He should have settled with me long ago. Many many years ago. This could drag out 8 more years and he could care less about me or my family. That gets personal. He is not a man of his word and hurt me much more than he helped.

Lazy, judgmental, doesn't return phone calls and relies on the testimony of one side of the story instead of getting to the bottom of the truth. Very dangerous and has no interest for what's right but rather, getting over to the next case. In my situation, people are hurt because of his incompetence, including children. Mr. Plovanich, you should be ashamed of yourself. Being in Law, especially Family Law-you should be well equipped and motivated to do the right thing. You are far from righteousness and I'm trying hard to compose myself and will leave it at that.

I was looking to getting my US citizenship as my father is a born US citizen. I explained the detailed circumstance to Mr. Roberts and he sounded very positive with our chances of obtaining it. However; after sending all of documents and obtaining DNA tests to him things started to drag on for several months to a year and longer. He never kept communication open with me and never told me he switched firms during our case. Every time I had communication with him it was because I took the initiative to call or email him. In addition I had to revisit many details of our case to Mr. Roberts because he couldn't recall them. After almost two years since taking my case he informed me he could not continue with my case and referred me to another lawyer as his rates had gone up considerably and his time was limited. We are a one single income family and I am very disappointed with all the time and money wasted. I feel I was not given reasonable attention and priority a client expects to receive. My father is very fragile and I was looking forward to spending his last years with him living in Rochester New York which appears will not happen any time soon.

This woman was my mothers lawyer till a little before she died. I was the only blood relative avail, and was listed as executor of her will. Nichole withheld important information after being hired by my Uncle who was backup guardian when my mother was hospitalized permanently. I had a meeting discussing why I shouldn't or want to be executor. My uncle stated that he had everything done down to a phone bill and all assets sold and all cash, and he could execute the will promptly. I was told it wasn't worth me doing it, maybe $5,000 and a lot of trouble. Well I decided to do it out of principal because at our meeting her and my uncle took advantage of my grief and thought they had it locked in. I wasn't told my mothers belongings including 2 cars belonged to me upon her death, moreso, upon her death ALL money goes to the other family. On the day of our meeting I went to my mothers house. All her thnigs laid out for sale the next day. I was told it was the best thing for me to do. There was not much left anyway, but out of respect I left everything there. Then I went to meet Nichole. I was never told that after everythng my mother had was sold, that money would go to the other family. I could have taken anything I wanted on that day. I live in Atlanta so It's a rare trip. I didn't receive as much as a button from my mothers possessions. THEN, since I was now acting as executor, and hired a lawfirm that was happy to do it. Nichole advised me nobody really wanted the case. It took her and Dan over a year!!!!!!, to transfer the proper things. I sat and listened to Dan tell her everythng was wrapped up. TAXES, THE WHOLE ESTATE LIQUIDATED, everything down to a phone bill. This was one of the hardest times of my life, and was the blood son of this woman that other people decided they would do what they saw fit. So, there's one more lawyer that's better at the bottom of the sea. Thanks Nichole and Dan. I did my part and served my mothers last wishes. Too bad I didn't get what was due to me. Memories of her. I didn't want money. Oh and by the way, my executor check was over $10,000. Another lie.

I hired Stuart for my divorce case in the past year. He was very demeaning in his approach towards my case and used repulsive language. I also discovered that his term "good faith" is non existent as he will say one thing or agree in "good faith" but then retract on an agreement. He will use disgusting terminology to describe clients. His website states he is a collaborative attorney but his mission is to defame clients and not get to the root cause of the case. His emails to other clients are insulting and repulsive. Do not hire Stuart unless you want to pay an exorbitant amount of money for a case that will leave you wondering and questioning the term justice. If you want to hire a shady attorney who compromises ethics, then hire him.

I hired Mr. Richard Evans to assist to defend me in the event that I was to be sued by our lender for a real estate project that went sour. To start, I was billed $1819 for initial research in the first week. I was then billed an additional $3,333 the following week for more research. After these 2 invoices were paid (Total $5152) Mr. Evans asked for a $7500 retainer that would be used for future litigation. I have an email from Mr. Evans that supports this as well. After the first week, I got an invoice that showed $5350 was already used of the $7500 retainer. I immediately contacted Mr. Evans and he explained that the money was spent on even more research. This research was not authorized or approved. This retainer was to be used for his services in actually litigating. The definition of litigation is: the process of taking legal action. IE: legal proceedings, legal actions, showing up in court, etc. None of these items happened. He merely continued to do more double research and charge excessive amounts. Mr. Evans misrepresented what this retainer was for and took advantage of me. When I signed this retainer, Mr. Evans made it very clear that it would be for future litigation and it would get me a good chunk of the way through the lawsuit. Instead, he blew through $5350 of $7500 (almost all of the retainer) in the first week doing absolutely nothing. He even lumped in old charges of work he did before the retainer was signed and those charges should have been on previous invoices. I have emails and invoices that support all of my claims. I have paid $10,500 for "alleged" research for this lawyer and have absolutely nothing to show for any of it. Once I realized that I was being scammed I promptly terminated the services of Mr. Evans. I have hired a new lawyer and he is advising me to file a complaint with the BBB and attorney general. Mr. Evans refuses to give a refund of any amount. I have a significant amount of experience with dealing with lawyers and have never been treated like this.

We went to Mr Laforte to represent us in a real estate matter. At first he was willing to assist in a dispute with the tenants as a courtesy. There was no mention of any fees for just writing a simple letter. We were referred to him because he is on retainer with a municipality where we are employed. He is compensated up front to represent the employees without additional fees. After he sent the short letters to the tenants as discussed the information sent to them was inaccurate. Immediately afterwards Mr Laforte forwarded invoices to us with inflated amounts due for services. There was no previous discussion mentioning that any fees would be expected. If there were proceedings through the court system, then we should expect to be billed. The landlord and tenant issue was resolved though a phone conversation. Mr Laforte had no involvement with the discussion as it was just a simple misunderstanding.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
